Assignment: PCA93 – Minimalism Date: 1/10/10-1/24/10 Two Weeks Image Tag: pca93 From: Fastball95 (Steve) Minimalism Though never a self-proclaimed movement, Minimalism refers to painting or sculpture made with an extreme economy of means and reduced to the essentials of geometric abstraction. It applies to sculptural works by such artists as Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Ellsworth Kelly, John McCracken, Robert Morris, Richard Serra, Tony Smith, and Anne Truitt; to the shaped and striped canvases of Frank Stella; and to paintings by Jo Baer, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Mangold, Brice Marden, Agnes Martin, and Robert Ryman. Minimalist art is generally characterized by precise, hard-edged, unitary geometric forms; rigid planes of color—usually cool hues or commercially mixed colors, or sometimes just a single color; nonhierarchical, mathematically regular compositions, often based on a grid; the reduction to pure self-referential form, emptied of all external references; and an anonymous surface appearance, without any gestural inflection. As a result of these formal attributes, this art has also been referred to as ABC art, Cool art, Imageless Pop, Literalist art, Object art, and Primary Structure art. Minimalist art shares Pop arts rejection of the artistic subjectivity and heroic gesture of Abstract Expressionism. In Minimal art what is important is the phenomenological basis of the viewers experience, how he or she perceives the internal relationships among the parts of the work and of the parts to the whole, as in the gestalt aspect of Morriss sculpture. The repetition of forms in Minimalist sculpture serves to emphasize the subtle differences in the perception of those forms in space and time as the spectators viewpoint shifts in time and space. For a nice set of Examples from the Guggenheim Collection Missions Present a photograph in the style of Minimalistic Art. WIT I was interesting to read about some of the characteristics of minimalism. I decided to look for something other than the empty scene that is most common of this style. I am interested to hear what you think of this as an example? Does it fit your definition? Shot during a walk around Boston during a camera club outing. I had decided to shoot as many images looking up at buildings as I could.

Santa Lucia of Syracuse
Made by Paul Lowry
Saint Lucy holding a dish with two eyes on it. This refers to a legend in which Lucy's eyes were put out by Diocletian (Roman Emperor and persecutor of the Church) as part of his torture. The legend concludes with God restoring Lucy's eyes. John Donne's A Nocturnal upon Saint Lucy's Day 'TIS the year's midnight, and it is the day's, Lucy's, who scarce seven hours herself unmasks ; The sun is spent, and now his flasks Send forth light squibs, no constant rays ; The world's whole sap is sunk ; The general balm th' hydroptic earth hath drunk, Whither, as to the bed's-feet, life is shrunk, Dead and interr'd ; yet all these seem to laugh, Compared with me, who am their epitaph. Study me then, you who shall lovers be At the next world, that is, at the next spring ; For I am every dead thing, In whom Love wrought new alchemy. For his art did express A quintessence even from nothingness, From dull privations, and lean emptiness ; He ruin'd me, and I am re-begot Of absence, darkness, death—things which are not. All others, from all things, draw all that's good, Life, soul, form, spirit, whence they being have ; I, by Love's limbec, am the grave Of all, that's nothing. Oft a flood Have we two wept, and so Drown'd the whole world, us two ; oft did we grow, To be two chaoses, when we did show Care to aught else ; and often absences Withdrew our souls, and made us carcasses. But I am by her death—which word wrongs her— Of the first nothing the elixir grown ; Were I a man, that I were one I needs must know ; I should prefer, If I were any beast, Some ends, some means ; yea plants, yea stones detest, And love ; all, all some properties invest. If I an ordinary nothing were, As shadow, a light, and body must be here. But I am none ; nor will my sun renew. You lovers, for whose sake the lesser sun At this time to the Goat is run To fetch new lust, and give it you, Enjoy your summer all, Since she enjoys her long night's festival. Let me prepare towards her, and let me call This hour her vigil, and her eve, since this Both the year's and the day's deep midnight is.

The Revere Home
Made by Nichole Renee...is mostly away :(
This is Paul Revere's house, and while I could give you some history on the place, two facts remain. 1. I don't know any history on the house other than the fact that Paul Revere once lived there. 2. I have a better story to tell. Well, better to me, anyway. When my husband was about three-years-old (the same age as our little guy), he went on a trip to New England with his parents. One of their stops was Boston, where they did some sightseeing along the Freedom Trail. One of their stops was the Paul Revere house. They went inside and were enjoying the tour. The house is set up as it would have been around 1776. My husband liked the semi-hidden staircase that anyone bigger than a three-year-old had to squeeze into. But then, it happened. He had to go to the bathroom. And at that age, when you've gotta go, you've gotta go. And you demand it. Loudly. His mom approached one of the tour guides and explained the situation. The tour guide explained that there were no bathrooms; this house was from 1776 for goodness sake! And if there were a bathroom, unless you were Paul Revere himself, you certainly weren't going to use it! Tell that to a child who really, really has to go. So, they took Hubby to a dark corner of the basement where a barely functional toilet had been installed (probably for staff and only for emergencies), and he was able to go. My husband peed at the Paul Revere house. And he remains pretty proud of that fact, since he's probably part of an elite minority who's been allowed to do that since it switched over to a historic site. The Praying Children
Made by Werner Kunz
The best photos you get, when you got the chance to shot something that is unusual and different how you would expected it. These are stone statue that were dislocated in front of a fence because there is restoration work to do. I don't know the original location of theses statue but think the actual position is powerful enough. What do you think this picture means? Technique: HDR, 3EV+-2EV, f5.6 (best I could get from my lens in this situation), 105mm, 1/125, ISO 250, dual-tone with sepia, vignette For the story & technique behind this shot, please visit my blog: world.werner-kunz.com !!! creative commons: Feel free to use photos with credits and links. Good Marketing
Made by Paul Keleher
A sign at St. Agrippina's Feast in Boston's North End. Saint Agrippina Di Mineo was a beautiful blond princess who was unmercifully tortured to death by the Emperor Valerian in 256 AD. After her death, her body was taken from Rome to Mineo, Sicily, by three holy women; Bassa, Paula and Agatonica. The Greeks also honor her and claim to have relics of her. Sant' Agrippina is the patron saint of thunderstorms, leprosy and evil spirits. Her Feast day is celebrated on the first weekend in August. Each year since 1914 this group of devoted people come together to renew their faith in her in Boston's North End, as was the custom in the land of origin, Mineo, Sicily. Each year everyone is invited to witness the respect and honor that is bestowed on this young, beautiful martyred saint.

Paul Revere's house, Boston, MA, 1957
Made by lreed76
This is what happens when you live in a family that never throws a photo or negative away -- when you're about 40, your Mom hands you a bag of negatives (still in their original bags from the photo shop) that you took with a Brownie box camera when you were 7-8 years old. This was during our 1957 vacation to New England and Canada -- it's Paul Revere's house. I was about as ready for this day as I ever was for a day of vacation -- this was the year Disney came out with Johnny Tremain, and I was really into the Revolutionary War. Got food poisoning at lunch and spent the afternoon at a clinic, but we were back on the road (Lexington and Concord) the next day.

Greenway Fountain & Custom House Tower at Night - Boston
Made by briburt
The last (and I think best) of the night shots I took of Boston's Financial District skyline from a fountain on the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway. Pesonally, I think it looks better when viewed in its larger size on black on my photoblog. There's also a few more details about the shot there as well. Just found out that this photo was featured on the Boston news site Northend Waterfront on 2 December 2009.

Hang a Lantern Aloft
Made by Nichole Renee...is mostly away :(
The fog. The mist. The darkness. Boston was not proving to be fruitful in terms of photography. Everything was so dark and grainy. The mist sometimes turned into rain, so my camera got shoved into my sweatshirt and shots were left untaken. I managed to get this fairly viable shot of the Old North Church. You know the one, from the poem Listen my children and you shall hear // Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere? Yeah! That one!! (Texture by Distressed Jewell)

found this really cool small diner in the north end of boston called theo's cozy corner. we were quite lucky that we looked it up on yelp and got the address cos once we got to the place, it didn't even have a sign outside. inside, it really was a cozy place... maybe six tables and a bar to seat four. i love eating at diners like this... the food was pretty damn awesome and service was excellent. and from what i saw, its frequented by locals.

Paul Revere House
Made by brooksbos...taking a break
On the night of April 18, 1775, silversmith Paul Revere left his small wooden home in Boston's North End and set out on a journey that would make him into a legend. Today that home is still standing at 19 North Square and has become a national historic landmark. It is downtown Boston's oldest building and one of the few remaining from an early era in the history of colonial America. Note: 90% of the framing is original!

Gloom
Made by Nichole Renee...is mostly away :(
I know I've already mentioned that Boston's weather wasn't ideal while we were on vacation in June...but I sure did enjoy some of the shots I was able to get because of the gloom! And I couldn't resist some birds hovering around the clock tower. The image just wasn't the same without them! (Textures and birds by Distressed Jewell)

35 of 365 - After a brief transition period, I'm finally out of my house. It's pretty crazy, new job, no steady house... I guess when it rains it pours. I'm looking forward to the next couple of months, they're going to be eventful, will make for some GREAT photos! I found this cool sunlight on a walk through the North End today, the sun was shining straight down the street, too much of a good setup to pass up!

Modern Pastry
Made by Randy Son Of Robert
If it's too busy at Mikes, you can wander across the street and get a great pastry at Modern Pastry. When we visited Boston years back, the owners of Mike's had gone on vacation and the shop was closed. We enjoyed a cannoli from Modern. Not having had a chance to sample Mike's we have no way of knowing if we got the best cannoli in Boston or not. www.modernpastry.com/

Boston, MA North End ~ Regina Pizza sign
Made by army.arch
I had a mini-Flickrmeet with and danh5150. We walked around the North End and then had pizza here at Regina Pizza. One of the toppings was sliced meatballs. It was quite excellent and my first time having meatballs on a pizza. The place was quite busy, but very well worth it. [I don't know why I didn't get an interior shot.]

Directions in Boston's North End

It's no secret that Boston's North End is predominately Italian. This modified fire alarm pole appears to offer directions to some of the more popular neighborhoods.
