The Reiszug

The Reiszug, the old funicular on the east side of the mountain, linking Hohensalzburg Fortress to the Nonnberg Abbey. This funicular is privately owned and is still used for the movement of goods. It goes through five successive great walls, each wall having a large wooden door which can be closed. For more info about the funicular, see this very good website at www.funimag.com/funimag10/RESZUG01.HTM

Erhardkirche - Erhard Church

Erhardkirche - Erhard Church

The Erhard Church is an architectural gem just in a very central location: at the Nonntaler Hauptstraße, just south of the Fortress hill under the Nonnberg Nunnery. The dome is richly decorated with stucco work in terracotta, mostly by Francesco and Carlo Antonio Brenno as well as Ottavio Mosto. The round paintings in the dome depict scenes from the life of St. Erhard. The main altar has twisted pillars and was built by Andreas Götzinger in 1692.

Nonnberg Nunnery, on the slopes of the hill and downhill from Hohensalzburg. In the Sound of Music movie, this is where Maria and the other nuns were based. Maria is sent out to the Von Trapp house to become the children's countess and keep them in check. Nice row of graves of deceased nuns in the foreground. Lovely scrolls and other relics inside, which require a 50-cent coin to be lit.
