Chinatown Church Lady, ca 1930
Made by emanistan
Photoshop colorization of an old photo I picked up a few years ago. This was one of two wallet sized photos in a little Morocco leather holder I picked up in a friend's antique store in Weaverville a few years ago. The owners buy from all over the place & couldn't remember where they got these pictures. I think they date from the late 1920's or early 30's and are of ladies connected with Chinatown Presbyterian Church here in San Francisco. This lady is standing in Huntington Park atop Nob Hill, a healthy two-block uphill walk from the church down on Stockton. The building behind her is the James Flood mansion/Pacific Union Club. Judging from her silk print qipao garment, this was probably a special day. The other photo featured Miss Flora Hubbard, who directed the church youth chior, so perhaps the chior had a recital in the park the day this was taken. Tucked in the holder behind one of the photos was a little piece of paper printed with Hubbard's address. After every photoshop editing job I do, I always see things I wish I had done differently. The most egregious problems here have to do with the coloring of the lady's qipao type garment. The bits of silk print visible were a big surprise after I first scanned the original wallet sized print, and it was always a goal of mine to bring them out a bit more. Unfortunately, i just couldn't make out enough of it to make out the overall pattern, so I had to use my imagination. I took a look at other qipao patterns and made out a design, and then I made the big mistake: I condensed the layers. When I checked the image in greyscale I found too late that some of the details I added were visible, ie they left dark areas where there were none in the original. Then, trying to fix things the lazy way--the all powerful gaussian blur--I made things worse: leaving the dress a patchwork of blurred & noisy areas. But you can't see these things so well in small size, and after spending so much time on something, I want people to see it, so here it is. I'm holding off uploading a higher res version till the problems are fixed.

Ok long story for this photo but worth reading. . . I learned about the half camera in my 3rd semester of B&W film class. So I found one for sale on craigslist and went to the city to shoot with it. My idea was to make one contact sheet the whole picture. So it took a 36 exposure roll of film, a half camera & a tripod to San Francisco. I started on the top left and counted 10 shots across then moved the camera down what I guessed would be one frame and shot 10 across again. After developing the flim I had to make sure I cut the film at the right spot to have everything line up in the film sleve. This was my first time trying this idea and it was a great sucess. Since then Ive tried this again but it very hard to recreate. Thanks for looking! This is not a photoshoped picture, it was done the hard way with film and the scratches are from the glass holding down the contact sheet. I have a much cleaner piece of glass for my second print. Time and Back
Made by ohad*
With Jupiter, Venus and the Moon looming over the western San Francisco sky, I took 28 exposures of about 300 seconds each beginning at sunset (6:35 PM) and ending after all three bodies had set beyond the western horizon (8:51 PM). I've read that this alignment is known as the Jupiter-Venus conjunction. Before I took the first long exposure, I made sure to do a quick capture of the sky to show how it looked without trails. Stacking these photos created an interesting result: the beautiful orange sunset which I took early on (and was in the first 4 photos) ended up dominating, creating this unique result that looks as if the stars were rising (left to right) rather than setting (right to left). I also had a few hiccups along the way including having to replace my battery which is visible about 3/4 of the way down the star trail. More at ohad.me

high ceiling || hohe Decke
Made by paraflyer
Nearly the same spot as on the photo, now with all these great colors and lights. The perspective distortion has been retained to show the size, depth and dimension of the huge hall and as you can see, this looks much higher unlike the grayscaled shot. Tried to get a balanced result as you'd stay centered inside the building.

Contemplation
Made by SF knitter
My husband and I visited Grace Cathedral recently. We had a blast exploring this truly beautiful cathedral. It was very peaceful. And while I'm not very religious, I did say a quick prayer for a friend who's mom is ill. Well...I was tagged recently by my buddy . So the twist on this game is: Which of the following statements is NOT true about me? 1. I have a knitting pattern published in a book. 2. I have met three Nobel Prize Winners. 3. I performed in a concert in Notre Dame Cathedral (yes, the one in Paris!) 4. My husband is from Australia. 5. The President declared my wedding day a National Day of Mourning. And here's who I tag: Hylda_H Hiker... JaveFoto (do this when you're less sleep deprived, lol!) idashum oneworldmj I'll probably post the answer tomorrow. :D update! the answer is posted below now.

straight pillars || gerade Säulen

Another nice spot inside the Grace Cathedral - another wonderful and impressive scene. Removed some people to get loneliness, adjusted the perspective distortion, changed the colors to grayscales and tinted the whole image in sepia. I really like that kind of color for buildings in combination with the old stone pillars.

St. Francis of Assisi
Made by Lady-bug
This is for Mary Anne and all of the precious animals at the Marshside Menagerie. This photo was taken outside of Grace Cathedral in San Franciso. The Prayer of Saint Francis O Lord, make me an instrument of Thy Peace! Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is discord, harmony; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light, and Where there is sorrow, joy. Oh Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

colorful altar || farbenfroher Altar
Made by paraflyer
This is the first of four wonderful illuminated photos inside the Grace Cathedral. It has been stitched together from three single shots, but of the missing of a tripod, disadvantageous settings (ISO 1600) and a lens with few low-light abilities, there are some noises in there.

colored windows || farbige Fenster
Made by paraflyer
The last of the four photos of Grace Cathedral shows you a great illuminated scene which is closed to the public, blocked by a grid. There was no way to come closer than this. I like the shadow of this little table in front - moreover the glowing orange window with the sun behind.

California St Car #49 at Pine and Jones
Made by David Gallagher
photo by my father, Gene Gallagher This is looking southerly from the corner of Pine and Jones, apparently the cablecar ran this route until 1954, although this is clearly a California Street car. Also, Car #49 was renumbered from #6 in 1957.... so I'm really not sure of the date of this photo. Today, there are no cable car tracks here. web.presby.edu/~jtbell/transit/images/SanFrancisco/CableC... www.cable-car-guy.com/html/ccsfros.html#calif

San Francisco Zoomin' Cable Car
Made by Samantha Decker
Oh, the cable cars. The quintessential San Fran tourist experience. Technically, they are a National Monument. However, the $5 far (no matter how far you're going), cramped quarters, and pushy tourists (hey, I'm a tourist too but I wait my turn!) trying to squeeze on the car in front of you when you've been waiting twenty minutes for one to come by not at capacity, all made it a rather disappointing experience. At least I can say I've rode one though, if that's worth anything.

Colorful Grace Cathedral church interior
Made by davidyuweb
This could be one of my favorite church interior photo. The best part is the sun light went through the through stained-glass window and painted the colorful floor. I was going to make this shot as B/W but I change my mind after i see the color of this shot. The ceiling is very high of this church that makes very hard to take a shot of it. Even with this 16mm fisheyes lens still can't cover the the whole thing. HDR

Before the Concert
Made by gcquinn
Happy Holidays everyone. I was just here at Grace Cathedral, in San Francisco, for a winter Brass concert, a warm, joyful gathering. I took this photo, however, as musicians were gathering to rehearse for a concert of the San Francisco Boys Chorus. The row of columns inside the row of stained-glass windows fascinate me -- like a cathedral within a cathedral. It feels light in both the sense of weight and light.

San Francisco view from The Mark Hopkins Hotel
Made by iceman9294
After the torch relay (or should I say Torch shell game) our team rallied ourselves over to a sponsor event at The Fairfield Hotel. Another photo enthusiast suggested I walk across the street to the Mark Hopkins Hotel for this stunning view. If you are in San Francisco, make sure to stop by at dusk and ride the elevator up to the top and make sure to crank your ISO up... ;-) Explore #251 April 10

Meditation Labyrinth
Made by aperte
This is my favorite shot from the visit. The partial views of the interest items, balanced against the repetitious curve. btw, I think this pattern (the whole labyrinth) would make a fabulous, fabulous quilt pattern. something the grandkids could drive their matchbox cars around. (note to self, current kids play with motorized animae transformers, not matchbox cars. ::sigh::)

Copper Blue
Made by Thomas Hawk
The views of downtown San Francisco from the historic Fairmont Hotel are not to be missed. Be sure to get a downtown facing room. Especially one with a balcony. Alternatively you can try to make your way up to the Crown Room at the top of the hotel to get this shot. (Hint, if the elevator has the room locked out, consider trying the service elevator if you're adventurous).

Grace Cathedral, San Francisco
Made by geatchy
Part of an ongoing Another in my series of church ceilings using fish-eye. I like this one because it looks a bit like a trilobite, and has three sets of organ pipes in it. The organist can be seen on the right, as he was shouting back and forth to someone up inside the left hand set of pipes, who clearly had a large hammer and wasn't afraid to use it.

The Labyrinth

Day 87/365 Nob Hill, SF On my way home I decided to stop at Grace Cathedral. According to the sign it was closed but the doors were still open. So I walked in and started taking pictures. About 5min later security escorted me out but at least I was able to take a few pictures and they were really nice about it. I can't wait to go back and redo this shot.
