The inside of the church has been rebuilt but not re-decorated as it once would have been. The columns and archways are colorful but very plain by comparison. Per Berlin.de: The Nikolaikirche designates the heart of Berlin, marking the location where the city was founded. Berlin's first stone church appeared at about the same time that municipal law was granted, in or about 1230. Approximately 150 years later, the long house was replaced and the late-Gothic basilica of brick still visible today was constructed. The mighty western granite block structure of its predecessor remained in use, and now has the distinction of being the only structure to survive Berlin's earliest years. The neo-Gothic brick tower with two pointed spires was added in 1876-78 by the city architect Hermann Blankenstein. During the Second World War the church suffered heavy damage and the densely constructed quarter around the dairy market was destroyed. Not until 1985 was it possible to begin reconstruction of the Nicolai Quarter for the 750th anniversary of the city. The Nikolaikirche was reconstructed as a museum in accordance with the provisions for historical monuments. The preserved original décor includes a number of important epitaphs and grave plaques from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. August 17, 2007 Nikolaikirche, Berlin-Mitte Germany

Adam and Eve

Adam and Eve

This headstone portrays the betrayal of adam by eve. On the far left, you see death and adam eating the apple. On the right, there's eve plucking another from the tree, and I'm guessing satan (a pan like figure) on the far right. I believe it's god at the top watching over the happening below. Why someone would want this as their headstone, I don't know but... Ok then. August 17, 2007 Nikolaikirche, Berlin-Mitte Germany

This wealthy patron not only managed to have a 6 foot tall headstone, but got his oil portrait in the middle of two angels. And here we thought vanity was a modern theme. August 17, 2007 Nikolaikirche, Berlin-Mitte Germany PS - notice the kid at the bottom straddling the skull.

I'm sure there's a story to this building. It's across from the berlin library and made out of red brick. It's lovingly carved and has statues and a gargoyle at the top . Aug 17, 2007 Near Alexanderplatz, Berlin-Mitte, Germany

This is the headstone to the family knoblauch. It's not particularly inspiring until I tell you... Knoblauch is German for garlic. August 17, 2007 Nikolaikirche, Berlin-Mitte Germany
