The Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) is a 15th-century church in Amsterdam, located on Dam Square, next to the Royal Palace. The church is used for royal coronations and royal weddings. It is also a burial site for Dutch naval heroes. The church was damaged by the city fires of 1421 and 1452 and burned down almost entirely in 1645, after which it was rebuilt in gothic style. It underwent major renovation in 1892–1914, which added many neo-gothic details, and was again renovated in 1959–1980. Today, the church is no longer used for services but is now a popular exhibition space. It is also used for organ recitals. [Source: Wikipedia]

Or, a study in contrast - on the right is the church, built 1652; on the left is Koninklijk Palace, 1655. In the middle is the bus/tram which services a nearby stop. This is what Amsterdam is like - old buildings, historical, beautiful, with the new just sort of squeezed in between. It looked like a NIGHTMARE to drive through, seriously.

New Church, located on Dam Square. Far from being nieuwe, the church was first built in the 1450's, but fire in the 17th century resulted in the church being rebuilt in 1645. Thus, this gothic church is new only when compared to Oude Kerk.

On Dam Square, the Nieuwe Kerk dates from the 15th century (but has been rebuilt several times). It is used for royal events including coronations and weddings.

They wanted 15 euro each to get in to this afghanistan exhibit. I just wanted pictures of the church interior!
