In 1586, the town council of Amsterdam decided to launch the building of the Grachtengordel (gracht means canal and gordel means belt), a vast ring of four concentric canals to the west and south of the historic town center. The plan included, first the widening of the existing Singel and then the digging of the Herengracht (1586-1609), the Keizersgracht (1612) and the Prinsengracht (1612) respectively. These canals, 8 ft wide, then stretched from the Brouwersgracht to the current Leidsegracht, which was dug in 1664. As the population continued to grow, work on extending the ring of four canals eastwards began in 1662. It was completed in 1665.

Most of the houses which line the canals of Amsterdam in the center of the city were built in the 17th century and 18th century by wealthy merchants. Although somewhat similar in appearance, with their narrow facades and front steps, they differ in color and in the way their gables are decorated. Beams with pulleys project over the pediments: the narrow staircases make it impossible to bring in furniture otherwise.

There are many bridges over the canals of Amsterdam, differing in style from permanent stone arches and metal walkways to drawbridges that allow passage of larger vessels through the network of canals.
