Newport (Welsh: Casnewydd) is the third-largest city in Wales (after Cardiff and Swansea). Standing on the banks of the River Usk, it is the cultural capital and largest urban area of the traditional county of Monmouthshire and governed by the unitary Newport City Council. The population of the Newport urban area is in excess of 160,000 inhabitants (est. 2006).

The Yaquina Bay Bridge at Newport, Oregon. Built in 1936, designed by Conde B. McCullough. The structure is a combination of both steel and concrete arches. The main span of the 3,223-feet structure is a 600-foot steel through arch flanked by two 350-foot steel deck arches. There are five reinforced concrete deck arch secondary spans on the south end of the steel arches and fifteen concrete deck girder approach spans. Decorative elements include ornamental spandrel deck railing brackets, fluted entrance pylons, and a pedestrian plaza with elaborate stairways leading to observation areas. I borrowed that description from the ODOT. Tachihara 4x5, Caltar-II N 150mm f/5.6 lens, Kodak T-400CN film. Didn't record the exposure, but I believe I shot this at f/16... I increased the contrast a bit to accentuate the steelwork. Best viewed LARGE. 4506096

A moonlight stroll along Nye Beach captured. The couple paused and took in the blue Pacific and the working fishing boat on the horizon. This 62 Second exposure was captured in Newport on the Oregon Coast. The wind was unusually calm but the surf was still quite active. I set up for a long exposure as a couple walked the beach, then stopped mid frame. At first I was unhappy that they stopped for long enough that they would appear in the image, but in the end I think they added nice perspective. Shot with the 20mm prime wide open. The only processing I did was to increase the exposure by about 1/3 of a stop and a very slight shadow bump. (Nye Beach Night DSC 4003.NEF 2006-12-30 - Enhanced)

Clouds, mist, salt spray at Nye Beach, Newport, Oregon. When I first visited this beach 29 years ago, this was Jump Off Joe, a high sandstone bluff on which a hotel was being built. Lawsuits intervened; in the years since, the bluff has eroded - first gradually, and then in great collapsing chunks - to this collection of low outcroppings. Read about Jump Off Joe.
