Passaic River Lift Bridge

Passaic River Lift Bridge
Made by videoal
PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson) commuter train arriving Newark's Penn Station over the Passaic River lift bridge. A vertical lift bridge or lift bridge is a type of movable bridge in which a span rises vertically while remaining parallel with the deck. The vertical lift offers several benefits over other movable bridges such as the bascule and swing span bridge. Generally speaking they cost less to build for longer moveable spans. The counterweights in a vertical lift are only required to be equal to the weight of the deck, whereas bascule bridge counterweights must weigh several times more than the span being lifted. As a result, heavier materials can be used in the deck and so this type of bridge is especially suited for heavy railroad use. Although most vertical lift bridges use towers each with counterweights, some use hydraulic jacks located below the deck. The biggest disadvantage to the vertical lift bridge is the height restriction that results from the deck being above the passageway.

Dioxin Tomb

Dioxin Tomb

Passaic River Newark, New Jersey USA After discovery of toxic dioxin contamination at Diamond Alkali Co's Agent Orange factory on the Newark waterfront, that company's successor, Occidental Chemical Corp, was allowed to wall the site off and cap it. The site has its own ground-water treatment operation to prevent further contamination of the Passaic River and connected waterways. According to the Baykeeper, it would have been better if Occidental had removed the contaminated soil, treated it and disposed of it properly. Instead we have this ominous mound on the waterfront, dotted with whimsical potted plants. Seen on Passaic River Patrol eco-cruise. More info at NY/NJ Baykeeper.

Manhattan Skyline from 1180 Raymond Boulevard, Newark, NJ

Manhattan Skyline from 1180 Raymond Boulevard, Newark, NJ

This is the view from my window. On a clear day the view of Manhattan is incredible and on a smoggy day the city completely disappears. On a clear night the lights are really awesome. This view is to the east. That is the Empire State Building in the dead center. Just to the left a little you can make out the top of the Chrysler Building. In the foreground you can see the mounds of shipping containers on the Pasaic River in Newark. On the right hand side there is a tall spire, that is the old MetLife Building on Madison and 23rd. Taken from Eleven80.

Picture taken from the north end of Military Park near NJPAC and the Robert Treat Hotel. Picture taken at nearly noon on October 21, 2006. On the left is the NorCrown Bank Building, in the middle is the partially renovated 1180 Raymond Blvd. and on the right is 744 Broad Street - the National Newark Building. Military Park begins with Raymond Blvd marking its south edge. The NorCrown Building sits against its eastern edge. 1180 Raymond is Newark's newest downtown residential community while the other two buildings are both commercial space.
