Hotel or Disney Theme Park?
Made by Express Monorail
I attempted to do a little research and try to find out a little about this set piece on the Streets Of America in Disney's Hollywood Studios. I didn't find much on it at all, which, given the loads of information out there on all things Walt Disney World, was a little surprising. I'll admit that I don't know a lot about New York or this area of Disney's Hollywood Studios. I knew that the picture was taken in the “New York” portion of the area and I made the assumption that it was a hotel. So I “Googled” famous New York City hotels. I came across this one called “Plaza Hotel”. It is an historic hotel built in 1907 and located at the corner of 5th Avenue and 59th Street in Manhattan, and is operated by Fairmont. While the Disney Imagineers obviously didn't follow the design of The Plaza to the “T”, there are enough design elements present that tell me is was certainly the main, if not only, influence. The most obvious elements to me are the diagonal, checkered floor, the basic structure of the steps with red carpet in the middle, the ornamental design above the doors, and the circle lights on the face of the canopy. The picture I found (in the comments below) make me wonder if the circle lights at the Disney version light up like this. Like I said previously, there are some things definitely different, but it certainly has it's influences. So there you go, next time you pass this “set piece” in the New York area of Streets of America you can know that it was designed after the historic Plaza Hotel. ___________________________________________________________________ Streets of America, Disney's Hollywood Studios, Walt Disney World Resort Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you have a great Thanksgiving Day!

Flight to Bokeh

Thanks to EddyMixx for allowing me to borrow this incredible 24mm f/1.4 nikkor lens to shoot with. Little did I know that it was worth two grand, but man, it made some nice pictures. As for the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights, WOW what a sight to see. Like others have said, photographs don't do this show justice. I got but a handful of keepers from here, this one probably being my favorite. The show is well lit, so a relatively fast lens will do the trick. This was shot at f/1.4 with a shutter speed of 1/50, at ISO 200. So yeah, it's bright! ___________________________________________________________________ Streets of America, Disney's Hollywood Studios, Walt Disney World Resort Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you're having a great day!

The Merry Birthday Trip
Made by Paul Gowder
We're home! Wow what a week! Ten days together as a family is amazing. We are very blessed to have been able to spend this time together. It was an incredible trip. There were so many magical moments and highlights like meeting Lou Mongello, meeting several of you fellow WDW photographers (Cory, Tom, his wife Sarah, Larry, and many more), meeting the cast of FOTLK because of one of my photos, and lots more! Can't wait to share more about our trip through our photos. Now I have to cull, process, and upload over 7,000 photos (lots of star trail and time lapse sequences), over 1,000 of them are of the family--might have gone overboard. As I was organizing them today I realized I took 15 shots of Brooke with Duffy, that may be a few too many!

We'll LIGHT the way back home. (Osbourne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights, MGM Studios)
Made by ohhector
While the Osbourne Family Dancing Spectacle Of Lights had to be one of the most amazing, jaw dropping experiences I have ever had, I didn't find much to take original photos of. I saw these massive soldiers and thought to myself 'that would make a great wide angle shot. The idea was to get really close, and have the bottom right foot of the soldier fill in that side of the frame, and engulf the shot, with the huge christmas tree looming in the background. Alas, it was not to be. The area just in front of this was not only roped off, but was also patrolled by two surly security men who I did not want to mess around with. I went up to the rope, got on the floor, and stuck my hand out with the camera as far under the rope as I could.

The Princess and the Truck
Made by Peter E. Lee
An unidentified little princess dances along to a performance by the band Mulch, Sweat and Shears at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida. The band was great (this was the first time we've seen them), and she was really getting into the groove! Lots of twirling and foot tapping. Note to my Flickr friends: I'll be posting 4 or 5 shots a day from this most recent vacation for a few days. I'll try to keep them varied, but please don't feel obligated to comment on all of them! I'll return to my normal one or two shots a day routine after I've gotten through the vacation sequence. I'll try to catch up on everyone's streams over the next couple of days.

Merry Christmas From the Gowders
Made by Paul Gowder
After meeting up with fellow photographers from WDWPhotography.com, we meandered around the Osborne Lights to find a quiet spot for our Christmas card photo. We tried several spots and different sets before being happy with this one. We enjoyed meeting several of you in person that night. I've been inspired by and learn a ton from you all this past year. Can't wait to see what all we come up with in 2011. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all our Flickr friends! Hope that 2011 is a great year for you and your family. View Large On Black I find Disney's Hollywood Studios to be my photography nemesis. I only have a handful of keepers from this park despite what would seem to be an abundance of photographic material. It gets marginally better when shooting at night but I still find it difficult to do anything creative. I don't mind this shot, I just feel like I could have done better somehow. I do, however, like the effect that the long exposures had on the water. Best part of the shot IMO. Thanks for looking!

Very Tall Grass pano
Made by Peter E. Lee
A little portion of the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure play area at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Erick simply adores these areas in the parks, leaving me lots of time to try to find ways to take creative shots of them while he plays. I generally fail. Tech note: It wasn't possible to back up enough to get an entire blade of grass in a single shot, so I took two overlapping shots and stitched them together by hand in Photoshop (this was one of those cases where the automerge feature just didn't cut it). More immersive if you view it

Master of the Ants
Made by Mike McInnis
Andrew poses on an ant sculture in the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground. He loved it, and he ran around in there for about an hour and a half, basically unsupervised. (I was feeding Matthew, so I found a place to sit down inside. Andrew would come find me occasionally, and there's only one way out so I knew he was in there, but for about 45 minutes I couldn't find him anywhere, despite actively seeking him out. Its a big place, with lots of nooks and crannies for hiding, and it was crawling with kids and parents.)

KERMIE, LOOK WHAT I DID FOR YOU! (Disney Studios)
Made by ohhector
I finally went GREEN I know I said I was looking forward to playing around more with shots of this fountain...but the only time I passed by here that wasn't in a torrential downpour, I was just feeling really lazy, hungry, and completely uninspired. I do like this shot, but I have a few other ideas I couldn't get to work that day, that I will have to go back and work on again. I like the tight crop here, and how the bottom of the torch and all the water in that area is blurred. What do you all think?

San Francisco Streets STREETS OF AMERICA: At the end of Commissary Lane, turn right onto the Streets of America, which create the illusion of New York City, San Francisco and other cities using forced perspective techniques. The buildings are all facades, but you'll spot a London street, and even a street right out of Chinatown. If you listen closely, you'll often hear the sound effects of a busy city in the background, too. Walt Disney World-Hollywood Studios-Orlando Fl.

Muppets Courtyard
Made by -Jamian-
View Large On Black A couple things I like: 1. The curvy lines of brick on the ground, and 2. The open space in the foreground, it makes this area seem huge A couple things I don't like: 1. The stroller graveyard, and 2. The blown out clock face Personally, the positives outweigh the negatives enough for me to really enjoy this picture. Thanks for looking!

A Sprinkle of Osborne Lights
Made by wonderful_world_of_Hilary
So night shots and me equals bad, reflection shots and me relatively decent. A night reflection... I have no idea. Besides not having a tripod I've just never been enthused about shooting at night but I had to try my hand at the Osborne lights. Everything turned out rather touristy. This shot I have no idea what to make of this. Please someone help and if you have any night shot tips they are most welcome. Thanks for looking.

Daily Disney - Stuck on Toy Story Mania
Made by Gary Burke.
On the first time I ever rode Toy Story Mania at Disney's Hollywood Studios, I got stuck. The ride broke down when I was almost to the point where I could exit, but I had to sit in the cart for around half an hour. I tried to take a few photos, but the exposure was tough, since I was still sitting in the dark. This was about the best I was able to get. This ride was so much fun though, even though I was stuck on it!

Honey I Shrunk the Kids Set This interactive kids' playground, located just off New York Street on the far right, is home to larger-than-life props from the hit movie. Scale super-sized anthills and spider webs, crawl in and around a can of Play-Do or slide down an abandoned film canister, and dodge the drips from the biggest leaky Super Soaker you've ever seen! *** 2 DAYS TIL WDW!!!! *** Stood here for a good 10 minutes trying to get a good shot. Having seen what a lot of you have done with this statue, I might redo it on my upcoming trip...but for now, I enjoy how this came out. I really like how it feels as if this were taken in NYC. Or maybe that is just me...I edited this in a manner very similar to my NYC shots from a few years ago. *shrug*

Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights

The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida. Yes, I know you can't see them dancing. Because this is a still picture, not a video. :) Read more about it at the Burnsland Blog. HDR from a single RAW file, tonemapped in Photomatix, edited in GIMP.

Daily Disney - Muppet Vision Queue Area
Made by Gary Burke.
Seeing the Muppet Vision attraction was one of the last things we did at Disney's Hollywood Studios. When we went in, we were the only people there. I have never seen the Muppet's attraction so empty! It was nice, to have our own private showing of this great attraction! I wonder, if we did not show up just then, would they have been just running the show anyway with an empty theater?

You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension. A dimension of sound. A dimension of sight. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into ... The Twilight Zone. Yeah, I know that I haven't been posting a lot of Disney pics lately, but I'm planning to post more from my archives soon!

Statler and Waldorf (Explored)
Made by Peter E. Lee
Perpetual critics Statler and Waldorf, sharing their insightful comments during Muppet*Vision 3D at Disney's Hollywood Studios. This was the last Muppet production Jim Henson completed before his untimely death in 1990. It remains one of our must see shows on every trip to Disney.
