CT - New Haven: New Haven Green - Center Church
Made by wallyg
Center Church and New Haven were founded in 1638 by the Rev. John Davenport and , who came from Boston with a group of Puritans in order to settle here. This Georgian building, the fourth church of this society built on the New Haven Green, was designed and built by Ithiel Towne in 1812-1814 at a cost of $34,323. The current structure was built over a small portion of the town's burial ground, leaving all the remains in their original positions to be protected by the foundation where a crypt was created. 137 identified grave stones of New Haven's founders and earliest citizens dating from 1687 were left in tact, including those of Benedict Arnold's first wife, Margaret Arnold, President Rutherford Hayes' grandmother and unt, and Reverend James Pierpont, a founder of Yale College. An additional remains of over 1,000 remian unidentified. The church is also blessed with a wide array of beautiful architectural accents, including a Waterford crystal chandelier, a Fisk Pipe Organ, Tiffany stained glass windows, and an impressive collection of silver items. Eli Whitney occupied pew #63 and Henry Farnum, builder of the Farmington Canal (which is now a linear park), occupied pew #67. President Rutherford Hayes visited the church in 1880 to visit his relatives. President Monroe worshipped here on a June Sunday in 1817. Daniel Webster addressed a large audience from the pulpit on contemporary politics in 1837.
