I've finally got round to uploading this shot, taken back on 9th September on our New Hall College trip. None of us had a clue what this rather sinister-looking plant was, and we couldn't even decide if these were berries or fruit. It's now been identified (cheers Andrew Dunn) as the above, also known as American Pokeweed. It is native to the US, where it is considered a pest by farmers. The seeds are poisonous but apparently the berries can be used for medicinal and culinary purposes (if care is taken not to crush the seeds!). More info available on Wikipedia.
