The Austrian Parliament Building (German: Parlament or Hohes Haus, formerly the Reichsratsgebäude) in Vienna is where the two Houses of the Parliament of Austria conduct their sittings. The main construction lasted from 1874 to 1883. The architect responsible for the building in a Greek revival style was Theophil Edvard Hansen. He designed the building holistically, each element harmonizing with the others and was therefore also responsible for the interior decoration, such as statues, paintings, furniture, chandeliers, and numerous other elements. Hansen was ennobled by Emperor Franz Joseph with the title of a Freiherr (Baron) after completion. One of the building's most famous features is the later added Athena fountain in front of the main entrance, which is a notable Viennese tourist attraction. Following heavy damage and destruction during the Second World War, most of the interior has been restored to its original splendour. The Athena Fountain (Pallas-Athene-Brunnen) in front of the Parliament was erected between 1893 and 1902 by Carl Kundmann, Josef Tautenhayn, and Hugo Haerdlt, based on the plans by Baron von Hansen. In the middle is a water-basin and a richly decorated base. The four lying figures at the foot of Athena are allegorical representations of the four most important rivers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. They represent at the front the Danube and Inn, in the back part the Elbe and Vltava (German: Moldau) rivers. On the sides are little cupids riding dolphins. The statues of the Danube, Inn, and the cupids were executed by Haerdtl, those of the Elbe and Moldau by Kundmann. The female statues above represent the legislative and executive powers of the state, executed by Tautenhayn. They are again dominated by the Goddess of Wisdom, Athena standing on a pillar. Altes Foto: Nov 1951 Neues Foto: Feb 2008 Anm.: Der 46 Meter hohe Flakturm im Esterházypark ist eines von sechs solcher jeweils paarweise angeordneten Kriegsrelikte in Wien und bildete als Leitturm des Gefechtsturms in der Stiftskaserne die im Juli 1944 fertiggestellte Flakturmanlage V. Die Flaktürme I-IV sowie VI befinden sich in Berlin und Hamburg. Neben ihrer Fliegerabwehrfunktion hatten die Flaktürme auch als Luftschutzbunker für die Zivilbevölkerung große Bedeutung. Mit ihren 3,5 Meter dicken Stahlbetonmauern gelten die Wiener Flaktürme als unsprengbar, da dies desaströse Auswirkungen für das jeweils angrenzende Wohngebiet hätte. Der Flakturm im Esterházypark war als erster öffentlich zugänglich, beherbergte zunächst eine Sternwarte (1954-62) und einen Jazzclub sowie seit 1957 das Haus des Meeres, ein Vivarium, das heute auf sechs Etagen über 3500 Tiere präsentiert. Im Jahr 2000 wurde das Tropenhaus, ein verglaster Zubau an der Westfassade, und 2001 die Kletterwand an der Südseite eröffnet, im April 2007 die Dachterrasse begehbar gemacht. Der im Jahr 2001 umgestaltete Esterházypark entstand im ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert auf einem Teil der Gartenanlage des früheren Sommerpalais der Familie Albrechtsburg (später: Palais Kaunitz bzw. Palais Esterházy), das sich bis 1971 als Kriegsruine an Stelle des heutigen Gymnasiums in der Amerlingstraße befand.

Venus von Willendorf c. 24,000-22,000 BC (Gravettian Period) Oolitic limestone 11.1 cm / 4 3/8” high This rare example of a venus carved confidently from hard limestone is an icon of Palæolithic art. It is one of three ‘venus’ figurines found on archæological sites at Willendorf, in Lower Austria near Krems. These sites have yielded rich evidence of temporary camps of the Gravettian period (c. 28,000–19,000 BC). The figurine depicts a short, rounded female originally coloured red. As with other Gravettian venuses the breasts and thighs are extremely exaggerated, and the legs taper downwards, ending a little below the knees. Venuses often lack lower arms and hands, but in this case the hands are shown resting above the breasts. The face is blank, but the head is engraved with wavy lines in a spiral design that probably depicts a hat of woven fibres. The navel and the pubic opening are well defined. A ritual function for venus figurines is suggested, although the specific nature of this is unknown. Suggestions include a rôle as mother goddesses, or symbolic icons of fertility or gender symbolism. The lack of attention to the face may indicate that the figurines are looking down, and it has been suggested that they are in an attitude of submission. Der Kuppelkonstruktion ging ein jahrelanger Streit der beiden Architekten Gottfried Semper und Karl Ritter von Hasenauer voraus. Hasenauers Plan war eine Kuppel direkt über dem Stiegenaufgang. Semper hingegen versetzte die Kuppel über Eingangshalle, da dies das Gesamtkonzept des Kaiserforums mehr unterstrich. Die Deckenöffnung in der unteren Kuppel stellt eine Kompromisslösung dar. Rund um die kreisförmige Deckenöffnung befinden sich Portraits von bedeutenden Persönlichkeiten der Sammlungsgeschichte: Baillou, Hochstetter, Stütz, Schreibers, Partsch, Kollar, Fenzl und Natterer. Das Kaiserforum selbst wurde nie verwirklicht. Nach der Ermordung von Kaiserin Elisabeth 1898 verlor Kaiser Franz Joseph das Interesse an der Hofburg-Erweiterung. Weder der zweite Hofburgflügel, noch die Bögen über die Ringstrasse (welche die beiden Flügel mit dem Kunst- und Naturhistorischen Museum hätten verbinden sollen) wurden umgesetzt.


MARIA THERESIA DENKMAL

Das Maria Theresia Denkmal ist ein Denkmal der Superlative. Der Bau dauerte 15 Jahre, und kostete rd. 850.000 Gulden. Mit dem Sockel bedeckt es eine Fläche von 632 m² und ist fast 20 m hoch, obenauf die Sitzfigur der Kaiserin mit 6 m Höhe. Alleine die Figur der Kaiserin wiegt 11,5 Tonnen, das Gesamtgewicht beträgt rd. 57 Tonnen. Das Denkmal zeigt die Kaiserin, wie sie mit ihrer rechten Hand das Volk grüßt und in ihrer linken Hand das Szepter und die Pragmatische Sanktion hält. Unterhalb des Thrones befinden sich Figuren der Tugenden: Weisheit, Gerechtigkeit, Milde und Kraft. An den Ecken zu Pferde die Feldherren der Kaiserin: Laudon, Daun, Traun und Khevenhüller. Auf den geraden Sockelflächen zwischen den Feldherren sind: der Berater in Fragen zu Aussenpolitik Kaunitz, als Vertreter der Verwaltung Haugwitz, als Vertreter der Militärs Liechtenstein, und als Vertreter der Wissenschaft und Kunst van Swieten abgebildet.

Das 140 m² große Gemälde an der Decke des Stiegenhauses wurde von Hans Canon geschaffen. Im Geiste des Darwinismus trägt es den Titel Kreislauf des Lebens. Es zeigt den ewigen Kreislauf des Kampfes um die Existenz. Rechts: die Geburt, der Mensch der sich die Erde untertan macht (dargestellt durch den Fischfang mit Dreizack), gefolgt von der Liebe und einem Putto der den Menschen krönt. Oben: der Kampf und Krieg. Links: der Abstieg, ein Putto wirft Blitze auf den Menschen, und schließlich der Tod und die Aasgeier. Unten: der Philosoph mit dem Symbol der Vergänglichkeit - dem Stundenglas. Er denkt über die Rätsel des Daseins nach. Die Sphinx in Hintergrund mit dem versiegelten Buch symbolisiert das ewige Rätsel. Der Philosoph wird keine Antworten finden. Das Bild selbst ist kein Fresko, sondern auf auf Leinwand gemalt.

The Austrian Parliament Building, (German: Parlament or Hohes Haus, formerly the Reichsratsgebäude), lies at the Ringstraße in the first district Innere Stadt in Vienna, close by the Hofburg Imperial Palace and the Palace of Justice.The main construction lasted from 1874 to 1883. The architect responsible for the building was Baron Theophil von Hansen, the building is an example of Greek revival. I took these shots on different days but, luckily, I took them from nearly the same spot. So, while organising my shots I thought of presenting them together... Hope you like them! Well, here is the story: A couple of days ago I posted the (here: the left one), and myself as well as some some of the people commenting the picture felt it didn't look as 'modelly' as it was supposed to. So I went back today with my 18-55mm standard lense and tried to snap a similar shot - this time applying the tilt-shift-effect using Photoshop (here: the right one) - to find out which one would look better. What do you think?

that picture reminds me of the three apes - you know, the blind one, the deaf one and the silent one... anyway and out of context: christoph is the devil! yesterday we sat in my kitchen and i drank so much red wine that i couldn't see straight anymore and he persuaded me to drinke one more bottle of prosecco with him... what helps me, is that i know, that he was as drunk as i was. poor elisabeth. she was sober ^^

Naturhistorisches Museum Wien - Dachblick auf das Museums Quartier Das MuseumsQuartier, kurz MQ, ist ein 60.000 m² großes Areal nahe dem Zentrum der Stadt. Zum Zeitpunkt seiner Fertigstellung war es das achtgrößte Kulturareal der Welt. Das heutige Hauptgebäude des MuseumsQuartiers wurde 1725 als Hofstallgebäude von Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach und seinem Sohn Joseph Emanuel errichtet.
