An interesting symbol at the head of the gravestone. I have no idea what it is or what it means. It may be some sort of flower and there appears to be trees on either side. This is located at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Charlotte, NC. In the book Sticks and Stones: Three Centuries of North Carolina Gravemarkers by M. Ruth Little, Ms. Little states that this design is a clubbed fylfot cross, which is the heraldic term for swastika. But I'm not sure she's correct. I've got photos of several gravestones with this design and the number of lobes vary from 3 to 6. And I've never seen a swastika that looked like this, even ones from the same time period. Additional study suggestes that these are lauburu crosses or Basque crosses, with the direction of rotation symbolizing either life or death. There appears to be solid evidence that the Basque people were using this as a smybol from at least 200 BC onward. But how it got to Piedmont NC, I don't know. Here's a link for a set of gravemarkers that incorporate Basque crosses:

Meet Miss Luna Aneksi "Lexi"

Meet Miss Luna Aneksi "Lexi"
Made by trafficbabe2000
Proper name; Miss Luna Aneksi Lewis. She is a very sweet girl and extremely funny. I highly reccommend pet adoptions. To have a companion, AND save a life is priceless! Please contact your local animal control office, the Humane Society or go to www.petfinder.com. I found Lexi at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal control Center. There are lots of animals of all kinds waiting for their forever home. On this day there were at least 25 cats and more than double that of dogs. They also have guinea pigs, birds and goats and sometimes potbelly pigs. If you are in the New York area and want to adopt check out eva101's photostream. She has the most unique animals who need good homes. And as Mr. Bob Barker would say, please help control the pet population, have your pet spayed or neutered. Thank you. I HAVE THIS IMAGE ON A MAP IF YOU NEED TO FIND THE MECKLENBURG ANIMAL CONTROL CENTER.

Interesting inscription on the tombstone. More detailed and personalized that most tombstones. May need to pull up the large size of the photograph to read the inscription. Found at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Charlotte,NC. As best I can make out, the inscription says, This Monument is intended to instruct posterity of a mournful & unusual Occurrance in the History of Man the death of three children of the same parents JAMES & AGNESS BROWN in the short space of 10 Hours viz Sarah John Bigham & Mary on the night of the 2nd & on the 3rd Day of May 1800. While parental affection heaves the sighs & drops the tears of Sorrow. Experience of the World and the voice of Christianity say it is well. Hush all my angry Passions then. Let each rebellious sigh Be silent at Gods Sovereign And every Murmmur die.

Steele Creek: Mulligan, Isaac (Detail - 1776)

Steele Creek: Mulligan, Isaac (Detail - 1776)
Made by johnncox
Close-up of top of gravestone for Isaac Mulligan who died April 25, 1776. Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Charlotte, NC. I don't know what the symbol shown in the close-up is. I wonder if it is supposed to symbolize a phoenix? Taken in 2007. Or alternatively, it could symbolize a thistle, as many of the people who moved from Pennsylvania down North Carolina in the 18th Century on the Great Wagon Road were Scot-Irish and the thistle is the national symbol of Scotland. Or it cold symbolize a type of anemone flower that was native to Pennsylvania and not native to North Carolina. Anemone flowers have a long tradition (predating Christianity, but adopted by Christianity) of symbolizing a young life cut short.

Another nice example of the Bigham style of stonecarving. During the late 18th and early 19th Centuries, the Bigham Family carved tombstones in Mecklenburg County, NC. They had a very distinctive style and are easy to spot. This one is located at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Cememtery. Below is a link to two other tombstones carved by the Bigham Family that utilize the motif of a central shield with three swords. Unfortunately, they are not very good photographs. I'll try to get better ones with the light is better. Link1: Link2: www.flickr.com/photos/johnncox/2665864590/

McDowell Nature Preserve & Campgrounds, Charlotte, NC

McDowell Nature Preserve & Campgrounds, Charlotte, NC
Made by Hal Kent
We stayed at this fine campground August 25 - 30, 2010. Each site has water, picnic table, fire ring and a choice of either 30 or 50 amps. McDowell now has two sites (R5 & R6) that offer sewer service. This small campground has only 13 RV sites but all are paved. The RV sites cost $26.00 a day. They also have both drive-in and walk to tent camping sites. Some of the tent sites have tents with cots plus one small cabin. Don’t worry about setting up your satellite; they have over 23 over-the-air TV channels. R2 is one of the larger drive-through sites and R7 has a good balance between size and privacy.

There’s so many things to do you probably won’t spend much time in the campground. McDowell Nature Preserve is located in Mecklenburg County, NC about 20 miles south of downtown Charlotte. We visited Brattonsville historic village (where the movie the Patriot was filmed), Nascar Hall of Fame, a car show at Charlotte Motor Speedway (old Lowe’s Motor Speedway) and US National Whitewater Center (for rafting). Carowinds Amusement Park is also nearby. Finally there’s the McDowell Nature Center which has interesting exhibits and free.

Steele Creek: Sawyer, Hannah (1785)

Steele Creek: Sawyer, Hannah (1785)
Made by johnncox
Gravestone of Hannah Sawyer in the Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Mecklenburg County, NC. This is the oldest depiction of the hands iconography I have ever personally photographed. Location: N 35 degs, 11 mins, &; 2 secs, and W 80 degs, 57 mins, &; 25 secs. Elevation 755 feet. Taken in 2007. I really have almost no basis for claiming this stone was carved by the Bigham Family. But the shape of the hand is very similar to how hands are depicted in other Bigham Family gravestones.

Another view of my favorite example of the Bigham style stonecarving. Very nicely preserved for as old as it is. During the late 18th and early 19th Centuries, the Bigham Family carved tombstones in Mecklenburg County, NC. They had a very distinctive style and are easy to spot. This one is located at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Cememtery. In addition to running out of space for the word Independence, it is spelled with an a.

September 4, 2010 Today I went golfing with Lyndsay, her mom and moms boyfriend, Bob. Debi and Bob both have their own golf gear and have taken private lessons, but it was Lyndsay's first time and my first time in about 10 years. The scorecard tells it all, we did pretty darn good! Especially since we were the beginners of the group. It was a great day out in the sun with family.

The An-225 is the major workhorse of the Antonov Airlines fleet, transporting objects once thought impossible to move by air, such as locomotives and 150-ton generators, and has become a valuable asset to international relief organizations for its ability to quickly transport huge quantities of emergency supplies during disaster relief operations. Photograph taken at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Charlotte, NC. Hannah Greir. This tombstone appears to be in the style of those made by the Bigham Family. However, embossing at the top is a different style from what I normally think of as the Bigham style. But the insrciption font is very similar to the Bigham style.

September 3, 2010 Day two of NC DMV, we got new license plates for the car. After all of the stress from the past two days, we decided to treat each other to date night with a movie and trip to find Krispy Kreme doughnuts at 11pm. Then it was time to begin organizing all of the luggage here so we can leave to Virginia on Monday morning.

There’s only one bath house/bathroom building but is more than adequate for the size of this campground. It’s one of the nicest facilities I’ve ever seen. Each bathroom has its own shower with sink, hand soap and one of those high speed hand dryers that you need to wear hearing protection before use. 08/29/2010

September 2, 2010 My wife and I officially own our Pathfinder now! It took about 50 miles of driving, two trips to the NC DMV and two different vehicle inspection stations to get it all done, but it is DONE! Now that that's all done, I realize i'd rather just ripstik everywhere.
