I guess Harry potter lost some thing. Can anyone sent him an owl or something ;-)) Technique: I had set the white balance on shadow, this effect made her eyes more red so that they would really pop. The aperture was set on f/7.1 to compensate for the lack of patrons on her feather coat so that she has some more definition in her face. Info: The Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) is a large owl of the typical owl family Strigidae. The Snowy Owl was first classified in 1758 by Carolus Linnaeus, the Swedish naturalist who developed binomial nomenclature to classify and organize plants and animals. The bird is also known in North America as the Arctic Owl or the Great White Owl. The Snowy Owl is the official bird of Quebec. The Snowy Owl is typically found in the northern circumpolar region, where it makes its summer home north of latitude 60 degrees north. However, it is a particularly nomadic bird, and because population fluctuations in its prey species can force it to relocate, it has been known to breed at more southerly latitudes. During the last ice age, there was a Central European paleosubspecies of this bird, Bubo scandiacus gallicus, but no modern subspecies are recognized. This species of owl nests on the ground, building a scrape on top of a mound or boulder. A site with good visibility, ready access to hunting areas, and a lack of snow is chosen. Gravel bars and abandoned eagle nests may be used. Breeding occurs in May, and depending on the amount of prey available, clutch sizes range from 5 to 14 eggs, which are laid singly, approximately every other day over the course of several days. Hatching takes place approximately five weeks after laying, and the pure white young are cared for by both parents. Both the male and the female defend the nest with their young from predators. Some individuals stay on the breeding grounds while others migrate.

19.09.2009 For September's . bo·da·cious also bow·da·cious (b-dshs) or bar·da·cious (bär-) Southern & South Midland U.S. adj. 1. Remarkable; prodigious. 2. Audacious; gutsy. adv. 1. Completely; extremely. 2. Audaciously; boldly. I think all the definitions fit this guy pretty well! So when surrounded by culture what do we do? Go to the zoo! It was just round the corner from the hotel and I don't think we realised quite how big it was. Most the enclosures were very open and you get the feeling if the animals really wanted to, they could easily get out. More photos to follow (lets see how many I can squish into the remaining MSH categories!). decluttred

As I was walking around in Arti's Zoo in Amseterdam during , this little guy appeared on my right, really close. Since I was just shooting the lions a few sekonds before, i had my 70-300 mounted, so it was hard to get soem decent shos. But in the middle of a bunch of blurry shots, this one stood out. A bit of HDR processing (yes, from a single raw), to try to rescue at least part of the details (the exposure was really off, and from the reflects on the nose to the shadow benetah the head, there are a LOT of steps of exposure), combined with some selective sharpeining and adjusting hte white balance, and thsi is what I got!

Raccoon, Artis Amsterdam

Raccoon, Artis Amsterdam
Made by dutchmetal
The raccoon is a very curious animal, his terrority used to be North-America. But after being introduced in Europe they quickly spread over the whole continent. They have become regular inhabitants of both Belgium and Netherlands were there are a thousand of them already living in the wild. Although the raccoon is harmless to humans it does effect the birds in the area where it lives, cause it likes to eat eggs of ground breeding birds.

The Amur Leopard is quite common in zoo's because of the international breeding program, but in the wild it only exists in Russia in one small area between China and the Sea of Japan. It is believed that there are only 50 Amur Leopards left.
