Nanjing
Nanjing, with a total area of 6,598 km, is situated in the largest economic zone of China, the Yangtze River Delta, which is part of the downstream Yangtze River drainage basin. Yangtze River flows past the west side of Nanjing City Proper, while the Ningzheng Ridge surrounds the north, east and south side of the city. The city is 300 km from Shanghai, 1200 km from Beijing, and 1400 km from Chongqing.
There is a large park called Purple Mountain East of the lake, Northeast of city center. It contains Ming Dynasty tombs, the mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen (leader of the 1911 revolution) and other impressive stuff. You could spend a day or more just exploring this. Admission varies but is around ¥100. The park has a shuttle "train" you can ride and is included in the price of certain tickets.
There is also a cable car going up the hill, and if you have the right shoes, feel free to walk down from the hill. Prices are fairly acceptable, for one-ride ¥25, for up-and-down ¥45.
Presidential Palace is a great way to spend a day exploring the headquarters of past emperors and later, the Nationalist government. The Palace includes the offices of many top governemental officials, including Chang Kai-shek and Sun Yat-sen, as well as the residence of Sun Yat-sen. The informational placards are printed in four languages. Admission is about ¥40.
Nanjing Museum, right on the main street of Nanjing, offers you a lot of different culture scenes, including the sailing of Zheng He (the eunuch admiral of the Ming Dynasty who explored at least to Africa, perhaps further) and real-silk-making. It's a great place to spend either a hot or rainy day.
There is a monument to the 1937 Nanjing massacre by Japanese troops of many thousands of Chinese, including a partly excavated mass grave where visitors can see the skeletons. Don't go there if you're sensitive, because it can be really upsetting. There is no entrance fee. As of mid-2007, the memorial is closed due to construction of a subway line through the area.
One of the bridges over the Yangtze has sculptures that are a classic of socialist art. Workers and farmers have tools; military have weapons. They all have books, presumably of Mao's Thought. The bridge was built after the clinch between the Soviet Union and China in the early 60's. The Soviet Advisors told Mao that it wouldn't be possible, but the Chinese built it anyway. This was the first major project built entirely by Chinese, without foreign help. Very interesting monument, and on the other side there are completely new towns in the making (Finished around spring 2006) including direct subway-connection.

Nanjing Through the Looking Glass
Made by idashum
Taken from the 24th floor of the Westin Nanjing. The streets were still buzzing at night. I really liked the effect of having the room and the city skyline. The cities in China never seem to sleep. I could stay awake for hours admiring the lights. From Wikipedia: The Nanjing Greenland Financial Center, also the Greenland Square Zifeng Tower is a 1,480 ft supertall skyscraper completed in April 2010. The 89-story building features retail and office space in the lower section, and restaurants and a public observatory near the top. The tower’s stepping is functional, helping separate these sections. The mixed-use tower, which overlooks Xuanwu Lake, became the second tallest building in China and the 5th tallest building in the world when topped out in 2008. An observation deck on the 72nd floor, 942 ft above ground, provides an unobstructed, panoramic view of Nanjing and the nearby Yangtze River, two lakes and the Ningzheng Ridge mountains. Marshall Strabala and Adrian Smith, who also worked together to design Burj Khalifa, designed the competition winning building for the Nanjing Greenland Financial Center. The design was taken over by Gordon Gill under the guidance of Adrian Smith throughout the post-competition design of the building complex. The complex was designed while all three of these architects worked at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill.

The Gates
Made by eddie_fletch
Taken in Nanjing, by the city gates located at Xuan Wu lake (XuanWuMen). This is my seconds attempt with a B+W 110 filter, just as the sun was starting to fade. It was really busy there, with people and cars coming through the gates every few seconds. I can't believe how the long exposure created by the B+W hides all this movement.... Great possibilities. Grad filter used for the sky. I know it looks a bit like HDR, but its not, just a long exposure with a small aperture... Taken in RAW... Very little work in Post Process, just temperature adjustment and removal of some dust spot on my sensor - really need to get that cleaned! Zhan Yuan Garden in Nanjing
Made by Rincewind42
The first garden on this site in Nanjing was built during the early Ming Dynasty by General Xu Da. It was destroyed during the uprising of Taiping Tian Guo. The Taiping Kingdom engulfed a large part of China druing the middle Qing Dynasty. The capital of the Taiping Kingdom was Nanjing city. The Zhanyuan gardens were rebuilt during the late Qing Dynasty of china. It was visited by the Quinlong emperor when he visited Nanjing. The Zhan Yuan Garden was restored again in the last century sometime after 1949, with the southern 'mountain' section added in 1960. For more information, visit my website's pages on Nanjing city and Jiangsu province.

The aviation martyrs cemetery in Nanjing, initially built in 1932 by KMT, is the memorial to the Aviator Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. The names of more than 3,000 martyrs, including 870 Chinese, 2,186 Americans and 236 soldiers of the former Soviet Union, were inscribed on the monument in Chinese, English and Russian. The US volunteer group fighting in China during WWII, usually known as Flying Tigers, was organized by Claire Lee Chennault in 1941. Between December 1941 and September 1945, the Flying Tigers helped Chinese people in the war of resistance against Japanese aggression.

Watching the Royal wedding from a Chinese Taylor shop
Made by BrianLockwood
This wasn't planned, visiting the tailor shop was just one of those Friday night to do list items. Follow up on some details on a dress and measure me up for a pair of Linen pants. We walked in seeing our Taylor watching the wedding. He's off camera but I think he was amused I was taking a panorama of his TV. So afterward he puled out his high end Canon DSLR and started taking pictures of the TV for some context of the area here other pictures outside of Mr. Chen's House/Taylor shop

roads to progress
Made by Nicolas Harter
Nanjing (Jiangsu) 2007 - yes, they are demonstrations in China too !! :-) I don't know really what was the point of that one but they where unhappy about some nearby shopping mall. They started blocking the entrances before deciding to block the whole road instead. The car driver saw the demonstration from far far away, had the whole 4-ways corner to take another direction but still went as far as he could before actually acknowledging that the road was not available for him.

Blazing Skyline
Made by eddie_fletch
Taken in Nanjing looking across Xuan Wu lake. It's a favourite location of mine, mainly because it's next to my hotel. On a n evening, the sun sets behind the city, lighting the smog in the air up.... This was my first try with my new B+W 110 filter. Love it - what a piece of equipment. Shot in RAW. Temperature increased, saturation increased slightly. Canon 40D | Sigma 10-20mm @ 10mm | F22 | 76 Sec | ISO 100 | Warming Filter | Tripod

Dawn of a New Age
Made by Lanfranch
Imagine waking up more tired than when you went to sleep. It's dark, and when you turn on the bedside lamp you are in a business hotel suite somewhere in a place you've never been before. You catch a glimpse of light through the heavy curtains, so you walk to it and open it. And you see this. Welcome to China, it says. Yesterday you felt so proud of yourself, and now you just feel so lost and small. Better seen large size.

out of the mist

I have a very good reason for posting a picture of China on Thanksgiving. You can read it on my blog :) This was the view of the city out of the window at the end of the hallway on my floor in the dorm. I have lots of great people in my life that I'm thankful to have, this morning, and all the other ones, too.

Confucius Temple - Burning Incense
Made by StephenJR
....at the eternally popular Confucius Temple (Fuzi Miao) in Nanjing, incense slowly burns the night away. The temple was founded in AD 1034 and was for those wishing to worship Confucius (there are several across the world)... ....well worth the visit, more for the area than the temple itself. Full of domestic tourists who are there for the boat tours along the canals as well as the usual black market.

Plane trees of Nanjing 2
Made by Nicolas Harter
Nanjing (Jiangsu) 2011 - French plane trees (or phoenix trees) are a symbol of Nanjing city. The first ones where planted in 1928 by the first mayor of the city, in honor of Sun Yat Sen. They are currently the stake of a conflict, some of them being cut at night by authorities to make place for a new metro line while the population tries to preserve them. (Part of a cancelled serie for a magazine.)

What A Sunday
Made by eddie_fletch
Probably one of my best Sundays in Nanjing. A few old friends, and a few new ones went for a BBQ down by the lake in Nanjing (Xuan Wu lake). The borders of the lake have recently been renovated and relandscaped. Great food, good company, and a lot of the locals staring at us, and taking pictures.... Perfect! Murkyness
Made by eddie_fletch
Taken in Nanjing at XuanWu lake, on a very misty, murky night.... I was going to go onto the island in the middle of the lake, but they were trying to rip me off.... This was about the only thing of interest around the edge of the lake that I could find... Really glad I found it! Canon 40D | Sigma 10-20mm @ 13mm | f14 | 30 Sec | ISO100

As always, title suggestions welcomed! Taken in Nanjing, down a dirty little backstreet.... Great place! China is a country of many contrasts, only a few hundred metres away, busy shopping areas and modern buildings. Which side is shown in the publicity (or propoganda) shots...??!! Nanjing (Jiangsu) 2008 - Sorry didn't got her name. made some attempts at shooting pretty girls (while they pose for other photographers) but i didn't get much results i'm happy with. The light is provided by a very basic torchlight, which doesn't remplace a strobe but can give some cool effects when shooting with ambiant lights.

江心洲place where i live
Made by Bingqing Xue
i live alone on an island near Nanjing city.. i love this island very much . my classmates and i often ride bycycles around the island and take pics and also have BBQ here. it's a quiet place with many fileds , i like walking along the river in the summer night and enjoy the sunshine in the winter.... i love my lives.

Spring is around the corner
Made by eddie_fletch
Cherry blossom usually starts in Nanjing around now, but has been a little delayed this year. Probably due to the colder than usual weather. They actally have a festival here for the cherry blossom, but I think on a smaller scale than in Japan.... Canon 40D | Sigma 70-200 @ 86mm | f3.2 | 1/4000 Sec | ISO100

The Orb..... Reworked
Made by eddie_fletch
A slight rework in LightZone, to try and give a different take on an archive image... Taken in Nanjing in 2009, it's a shiny steel ball shot at 400mm, using a Sigma 70-200 with a 2.0x Teleconverter. Camera on a Tripod hidden in the bushes... 10s timer, press it and run! The original image :
