1960 Korea_Looking SW From Namsan Mountain Toward Yongsan & US 8th Army Main Post
Made by Smothers52
This is a 1960 photo taken by my father Leroy Smothers from Namsan Mountain near our New Itaewon home, looking southwest towards the 8th US Army Main Post in Yongsan - or North Post as we used to call it back then. Two Han River bridges are visible in the background. South Post is visible in the background to the left of the bridges. The steam/smoke visible to the right probably is from locomotives at the train yard located there. The large open field at the base of Namsan Mountain in the right foreground is the rifle firing range used by the 8th Army - my friends and I used to sneak down there to collect spent bullets. The open field in the center foreground, I believe, is the Army parade ground.....the Army used to have a daily flag-lowering ceremony at 5:00 PM on that field, at which time they would fire a small cannon (blanks of course) while the US flag was lowered and a bugler played Taps. We could set our watches by the daily cannon fire! Comments on this photo and on my analysis of it are very welcome. Source: 35 mm slide Labeled Seoul by Elly or Leroy Smothers

1960 Korea_Looking West from Namsan Mountain Toward US 8th Army Main Post Rifle Firing Range

1960 Korea_Looking West from Namsan Mountain Toward US 8th Army Main Post Rifle Firing Range
Made by Smothers52
1960 photo of the Rifle Firing Range on Main Post, US 8th Army, Yongsan, Korea, as viewed looking west from the southern base of Namsan Mountain - west of Itaewon. Firing Range is the raised field, right foreground. Most of Main Post is located in the backgound to the left of the Firing Range, but just behind the Firing Range on the right are a few military Quonset Huts (horizontal cylindrical buildings). Han River is visible to the left, behind the hill in the background. Housing in foreground is off-base civilian property (Korean). Photograph taken by my father, Leroy Smothers, near our home in New Itaewon (as the area was called in the 1960's).
