Head Master of the Zilla Parishat High School in Mothey, she put a great deal of effort into reducing child labor even before MVF appeared on the scene. She went from house to house in the village collecting statistics on school-going children and those working at home or in bonded labor. She took these figures to the village board who dismissed her. Ironically it was the Mandal (a mandal a made up of 15-20 villages) Education Officer who had a problem with her ideas since he didn't see the benefit to society from educated children. Since MVF appeared, Nirmala's work has become easier and she now heads the local primary school, teaches at it, and is single-handedly responsible for all the artwork and educational posters in the school, many of which are up on her office walls. Born to a family of nomadic animal herders in Andhra Pradesh, he had no stable home and his parents saw no benefit from giving him and education. He moved from village to village with the herd until meeting MVF volunteers who tried to convince him parents to let him study. They resisted, citing economic reasons but with the right motivation and convincing arguments in favor of child education, the parents agreed to send Kotaiah to a bridge camp run by MVF. A Telugu boy who migrated with his family to Mumbai and worked in a restaurant until he decided to go to school. However, he couldn't continue after the 6th grade because of trouble in obtaining a TC (transfer certificate). MVF stepped in and brought him to a bridge camp where he will study up to a 7th grade level and then will be given a TC. Nirmala, the headmaster of the Zilla Parishat Primary School in Mothey teaches a group of primary school children about the human anatomy. It was almost impossible to get pictures of kids in their natural state and alone unless the teachers were around to keep them in contol. As soon as I pointed my camera at one kid, every single child with a line of sight view of my camera would immediately materialize in front of me.
