Dejima in Nagasaki
Made by musicmuse_ca
The surviving Western settlements in Nagasaki include Dejima and Glover Gardens. Dejima was an island just off of Nagasaki, where the Shogun kept Westerners after the Christian uprisings of the early 17th Century. After these uprisings by Japanese Christians, the Jesuit fathers were expelled from Japan. Prior to their expulsion, Nagasaki had actually been under the rule of the Society of Jesus from 1580 until 1588. But families were complaining about the Jesuit fathers making slaves out of their loved ones. So Christianity was banned and the Jesuits were expelled from Nagasaki. Fearing the political aims of the Jesuit fathers, the Shogunate also issued a decree in 1612 forbidding Christian proselytizing. After the , just south of Nagasaki on Kyushu, the Shogunate decided to trade only with the Dutch, who were not interested in conversion, only commerce. For two hundred years, Westerners were confined to to Dejima, a small island in Nagasaki and allowed no contact with the Japanese public. Dejima is now a part of the city itself with a high-tech museum documenting the 200 years of limited Western contact.

shelter from the storm

During my very damp afternoon in Nagasaki I hid in Oura Catholic Church down near Glover Gardens. Nagasaki has quite a few churches, including a cathedral (which replaces one destroyed by the atom bomb), because it was one of the only cities in Japan open to the rest of the world for a 100 years or so, and saw a lot of Portuguese traders.

A Pale View of Hills

On clearer days, I could see, far beyond the trees on the opposite bank of the river, a pale outline of hills visible against the clouds. - A Pale View of Hills, Kazuo Ishiguro. These are the hills of Inasa, above Nagasaki.
