Ishtar Gate _DSC17938
Made by youngrobv (Rob&Ale)
Detail of 's cuneiform inscription on the Ishtar Gate, which reads: Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, the faithful prince appointed by the will of Marduk, the highest of princely princes, beloved of Nabu, of prudent counsel, who has learned to embrace wisdom, who fathomed their divine being and reveres their majesty, the untiring governor, who always takes to heart the care of the cult of Esagila and Ezida and is constantly concerned with the well-being of Babylon and Borsippa, the wise, the humble, the caretaker of Esagila and Ezida, the firstborn son of Nabopolassar, the King of Babylon. Both gate entrances of Imgur-Ellil and Nemetti-Ellil following the filling of the street from Babylon had become increasingly lower. Therefore, I pulled down these gates and laid their foundations at the water table with asphalt and bricks and had them made of bricks with blue stone on which wonderful bulls and dragons were depicted. I covered their roofs by laying majestic cedars length-wise over them. I hung doors of cedar adorned with bronze at all the gate openings. I placed wild bulls and ferocious dragons in the gateways and thus adorned them with luxurious splendor so that people might gaze on them in wonder I let the temple of Esiskursiskur (the highest festival house of Markduk, the Lord of the Gods a place of joy and celebration for the major and minor gods) be built firm like a mountain in the precinct of Babylon of asphalt and fired bricks. These polychrome relief tiles were excavated in the 1930s by the German archaeologist Robert Koldewey. The tiles were completely shattered, requiring around two years to clean, preserve and reassemble. The more vivid blue tiles surrounding the figure were recreated using the original glazing process to complete the front of the restored Ishtar Gate at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. * 25 Aug '08 - 500 views, 3 Nov - 1000

Bode

Bode
Made by StudioMde
The Bode Museum is one of the group of museums on the Museum Island in Berlin, Germany; Closed for repairs since 1997, the museum was reopened on October 18, 2006. It is now the home for a collection of sculptures, Byzantine art, and coins and medals. The sculpture collection shows art of the Christian Orient (with an emphasis on Coptic Egypt), sculptures from Byzantium and Ravenna, sculptures of the Middle Ages, the Italian Gothic, and the early Renaissance. Late German Gothic works are also represented by Tilman Riemenschneider, the south German Renaissance, and Prussian baroque art up to the 18th century. In the future selected works of the Gemäldegalerie will be integrated into the sculpture collection. This is reminiscent of William von Bode's concept of style rooms, in which sculptures, paintings, and crafts are viewed together, as was usual in upper middle-class private collections. The Münzkabinett (coin cabinet), currently housed at the neighbouring Pergamon Museum, is one of the world's largest numismatic collections. Its range spans from the beginning of minting in the 7th century BC in Asia Minor up to the present day. With approximately 500,000 items the collection is a unique archive for historical research, while its medal collection makes it an important art exhibition at the same time.

Egyptian Museum - Bust of Queen Nefertiti

Egyptian Museum - Bust of Queen Nefertiti
Made by *Checco*
Nefertiti (the beauty that has come) was the Great Royal Wife (or chief consort/wife) of the Egyptian Pharaoh Amenhotep IV (later Akhenaten), and the mother in law and probable stepmother of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun. She may have also ruled in her own right under the name Neferneferuaten-Nefertiti (meaning, the Aten is radiant of radiance because the Beautiful has arrived) briefly after her husband's death and before the accession of Tutankhamun. Her name roughly translates to the beautiful (or perfect) woman has come. She also shares her name with a type of elongated gold bead, called nefer, that she was often portrayed as wearing. She was made famous by her bust, now in Berlin's Altes Museum. The bust is one of the most copied works of ancient Egypt. It was attributed to the sculptor Thutmose, and was found in his workshop. The bust itself is notable for exemplifying the understanding Ancient Egyptians had regarding realistic facial proportions. She had many titles, at Karnak there are inscriptions that read Heiress, Great of Favour, Possessed of Charm, Exuding Happiness, Mistress of Sweetness, beloved one, soothing the king's heart in his house, soft-spoken in all, Mistress of Upper and Lower Egypt, Great King's Wife, whom he loves, Lady of the Two Lands, Nefertiti.

. Exhibition hall of the German Historical Museum The extension, which took four years to complete, is a sparkling addition to the city’s skyline. With its dramatic, glass-walled spiral staircase, the new wing stands in sharp contrast to its neighbors, the neoclassical Altes Museum and Neue Wache, built by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Pei called on specialists from across Europe to help construct his design: an Irish team built a special supporting framework; parts of the complex staircase were shaped in the Netherlands; he combined French limestone with North American granite and Finnish glass. In an interview with German newspaper Die Zeit, Pei put his creation in context: The architecture should seduce people to move through the whole building full of curiosity and pleasure. I even want to tempt them to the top-most floor through ever more steps, new views. It’s Pei’s only project in Germany. Like the new glass cupola of Berlin’s Reichstag by Norman Foster, the Pei wing is expected to attract tourists with its striking design. mimoa.eu/projects/Germany/Berlin/Exhibition hall of the German Historical Museum

Pergamon Museum - Ishtar Gate _DSC17940

The Lion is the symbol of Babylon, and represents Ishtar, the goddess of fertility, love and war. Meant not only to symbolise Babylon, but to instill fear in enemies, it seems fitting that a single stone lion, albeit poorly preserved, is the only true remainder of Babylon that stands in Iraq today. Some 120 lions were created in polychromed relief tiles for the processional way towards the northern entrance to Babylon, the , as well as Nebuchadnezzar's Throne Room. Several museum around the world are in posession of these poly chrome lions, but the majority remain in the Pergamon Museum, placed in a reconstructed processional way heading to the reconstructed Ishtar Gate. These polychrome relief tiles were excavated in the 1930s by the German archaeologist Robert Koldewey. The tiles were completely shattered, requiring around two years to clean, preserve and reassemble. The more vivid blue tiles surrounding the figure were recreated using the original glazing process to complete the lower blue tiled section of the processional way in Berlin's Pergamon Museum.

Night at Berliner Dom, Berlin Germany

Night at Berliner Dom, Berlin Germany
Made by magnetic lobster
This is Berliner Dom (Berlin Cathedral) on Museumsinsel (Museum Island) in the Mitte district of Berlin, Germany. The rocky structure in the foreground is part of a fountain that had been turned off before I took this shot. If the fountain had been on, I think it would have been distracting (I walked around for a while when the fountain was on and didn't find a composition I liked). Plus, the spray would have made this particular location rather challenging. I used more than five minutes of exposure to get the cloud movement and also because the fountain was fairly dark. In fact, there was a significant piece of trash in the fountain (I've opted to hide it here) that I failed to notice until I was packing up my tripod. Instead of bulbing an exposure lasting a few minutes, I had the camera take several consecutive 30-second exposures and then I combined them all. This provides more dynamic range than a single longer exposure. Nikon D90, Tokina 11-16mm at 11mm, f/10, IS0 800. A total of about five and a half minutes of exposure from several separate shots.

Contrary to the , this is a HDR, taken at night, made out of 5 single exposures. The different colors, illuminating the front part of the museum as well as the walkway going there and the switched off fountain just in front of the camera, were what fascinated me the most. Angel in my heart

Angel in my heart

Play upon your heart strings to me, I will sing a strange melody. Dance with me a magic ballet, stay with me 'til night turns to day. Let me in your dreams, angel in my heart. By a pool of darkening dreams love is slowly twisting downstream underneath the tortuos trees out into the sad, silent seas. Lock me in your arms, angel in my heart. How can I feel, how can I feel love when you're gone? How much sin, how much can true forgiving cost? I'm in your skin, I want to win back what I've lost. I can feel the salt on my skin, I can hear the birds on the wing. I can smell the wood on the fire, I can see the smoke of desire. Let me in your dreams, angel in my heart. Shot with Canon EOS 40D + Tamron 18-200mm Oh, I am very proud of this one. Its hard to shoot the famous Berlin sights from an unusual perspective, and even if there may be people who shot it from this one before, I havent seen any. I finally booked my first holidays for this year: I will be going to Oslo and Brussel in mid April. This will be awesome! If you are from or in Oslo or Brussels between April 16 and April 24, just send me a mail please. I am looking for people to shoot with! Would be more than cool!
