(Firstly, this photo really needs to be viewed large on black) I usually enjoy the challenge of taking portraits in natural light. I find that in general the resultant photos tend to look more natural and less 'worked' which is what I want when taking photos of friends since I prefer to capture what I see rather than some glamourized version of them. Having said that, some lighting conditions are sufficiently harsh that I do end up pulling out my strobes. Even though cameras perform remarkably well in very dark conditions these days, sometimes you need to fill in light under the subjects eyes, for instance, and in these cases although you might be able to get by with a reflector more often than not you must resort to a strobe. In the restaurant where this photo was taken the light was both dark and very reddish. The red tint worked well for Anuca's clothing and the background but also made a mess of her skin tones. This red cast is why all the other photos taken in this location were converted to black and white (and then perhaps split toned for some color) since going black and white effectively eliminates these colour casts. Anyway, I wanted to take at least one colour photo of Anuca and so decided to use an alternative light source. I didn't have any strobes or flashlights (we were having dinner after all!) but we did have phones. Being geeks, we had 3 smartphones: a Palm Pre, an Android G1 and of course an iPhone. With all three of their LCDs on at maximum brightness the lighting was improved a lot. Held below her face, the phones lit up the shadows under her eyes cast by the overhead ceiling lighting. More importantly, since the LCDs tended to be cold (i.e. more on the blue side of white) they compensated for the warm (i.e. on the redder side of white) incandescent light of the restaurant. This photo was what I ended up with. Of all the photos in my stream thus far, it is probably my favourite -- not merely because I find it aesthetically pleasing, but because it involved a geek solution to capture. This image is from WE3, an awesome graphic novel by writer Grant Morrison and artist Frank Quitely. Frank's style is awesome and if you don't know his stuff you should check it out. www.readaboutcomics.com/2005/01/28/we3/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Quitely

www.iknow-london.co.uk The Museum of London Docklands is housed within a Georgian warehouse at Canary Wharf. This is one of London's top museums exploring the history of the London Docklands, the London Blitz and themes ranging from slavery to immigration. A superb model of the Old London Bridge is also on display inside.

Another portrait of Anuca. I tried for a more antique look in post processing but am not quite sure whether I managed it or not. [Method: Natural light, clarity adjustments, greyscale conversion, curve adjustments] Canon EOS 5D Mark II with Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM view this photo large

Museum of London Docklands. Built in 1802, the building was originally used to store vast quantities of rum, molasses, coffee, pimento and cotton from the West India slave plantations. Just about the only free thing in Docklands and well worth a visit. www.museumindocklands.org.uk/English/

One for the Board Horde - instead of going skiing this year, I played a gig wearing my Horde top. Well, a small consolation (and it was an excellent gig too).
