Überorgan
Made by !architect4!
See this BIG Featured on archidose Tim Hawkinson's Überorgan What are those bus-size balloons in the Museum Entrance Hall? They are Überorgan, a massive construction of balloons and horns by Tim Hawkinson that is making its West Coast debut at the Getty Center. Überorgan complements the exhibition Zoopsia: New Works by Tim Hawkinson (March 6–September 9, 2007). What Is Überorgan? Überorgan is an enormous contemporary sculpture by Los Angeles-based artist Tim Hawkinson. It exemplifies Hawkinson's characteristic use of the ordinary to achieve the extraordinary, combining and recomposing common industrial materials and found musical phrases into a multisensory sculptural experience. Überorgan changes with every installation, and at the Getty Center it playfully interacts with its setting, the modernist rotunda designed by architect Richard Meier. The musical score for Überorgan consists of a 250-foot-long scroll. Black dots and dashes encode the notes of traditional hymns, pop songs, and improvisational tunes. The notes are deciphered by light-sensitive switches in its player and scrambled to create an endless variety of compositions. Überorgan performs for five minutes every hour on the hour throughout the run of the exhibition.

Mischief and Repose John William Godward English, 1895 Oil on canvas 23 x 51 1/2 in. 79.PA.149 A young woman reclines on a tiger skin on a marble ledge while her companion teases her with a dress pin. They are dressed in diaphanous robes fashioned after chitons worn by women in ancient Greece. Another dress pin and the reclining woman's hair ribbon lie scattered on the marble floor. For over half a century after the continued excavations of Pompeii began in 1748, artists were fascinated with Greek and Roman life. John William Godward painted many scenes like this one of idealized beauties in calm, often sterile environments. In this painting, the figure of Repose is arranged seductively, with her breast and nipple showing through the thin material of her dress. But there is something distinctly untouchable about these women; they do not engage the viewer with an inviting gaze nor solicit personal contact. Like their antique setting, they possess a monumental, marmoreal quality, resembling Greek statues frozen in time. www.getty.edu/art/gettyguide/artObjectDetails?artobj=805 Shot at ISO 800, Aperture of 2.8, Shutter speed of 1/40 and Focal Length of 55.0 mm Taken with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm F2.8 ZA SSM (SAL-2470Z) lens and processed by Adobe Photoshop Lightroom on Thursday November-26-2009 12:13 EST PM

057_Getty Center Spring 2011

A few hours on a Tuesday afternoon at the Getty with my trusty Canon 17mm TSE lens and 5DII - I even had time to check out 3 exhibitions! The Getty Center, in Brentwood, Los Angeles, California, is a campus for cultural institutions founded by oilman J. Paul Getty. The $1.3 billion center, which opened on December 16, 1997,[2] is also well known for its architecture, gardens, and views overlooking Los Angeles. The center sits atop a hill connected to a visitor's parking garage at the bottom of the hill by a three-car, cable-pulled tram. The center draws 1.3 million visitors annually. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Getty_Center

Taken from the Getty Museum. The Getty Center, designed by architect Richard Meier, is the US$1.2 billion flagship location of the J. Paul Getty Trust, the largest arts endowment in history (at over US$3 billion). It is located on a hill in Brentwood, Los Angeles, California overlooking Interstate 405 and Bel-Air. The museum is free to the public (although there is a parking fee imposed by the City of Los Angeles). The Getty Center is high enough that on a clear day, it is possible to see the snow at Big Bear as well as the Pacific Ocean and the entire Los Angeles basin.

Explored. Highest position so far: #265. From: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Getty_Center : The Getty Center, in Brentwood, Los Angeles, California, is one of two locations of the J. Paul Getty Museum. The museum's permanent collection includes pre-20th-century European paintings, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, sculpture, and decorative arts; and 19th- and 20th-century American and European photographs.[2] Among the works on display is the painting Irises by Vincent van Gogh.

Also? Adobe Photoshop Elements presets -of a fashion. Until I created the 0rated Presets I had no clue Elements existed. Never heard of it, never used it. I've spent the last couple of days playing with Elements, trying to get the 0rated Presets to work. They do not. However there is a way around it. Free Presets for PS Elements (6&7) are now available for download off the blog!

I Love L.A.!

Overlooking Los Angeles — Century City, more specifically — from among the sculptures at the Getty Center. This 1977 stainless steel sculpture by Robert Adams is titled “Two”, and I can indeed imagine seeing it used on Sesame Street for teaching numbers...;-) 105 x 48 x 35 in., 1032 lbs. (2.67 x 1.22 x 0.89 m, 469 kg) The red sculpture on the left is Mark di Suvero’s “Gandydancer’s Dream”.

aka Flashback Friday Taken just over ten years ago on a point and shoot Minolta film camera. I had found this roll of 35mm in the back of a drawer and really had no idea what was on it. So yes, the film is way expired. But I also found it interesting to step back ten years, well before I took the digital plunge. Before I consciously began composing more than snapshots of my travels. This is what was then, the newly (by four years) opened Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

Hawkinson---Uberorgan-3

Tim Hawkinson's Uberorgan performs for five minutes, on the hour, every hour, during the course of its exhibition. It's totally amazing and not to be missed while it's on display at the Getty. From the exhibition Zoopsia at the Getty Center in Los Angeles. Read my spiel about this exhibition here

I thought I'd post this because after I posted the previous photo I got a couple mails asking if I thought to take just this portion of the building. Then the note on the other image from americanadian_8 (who has many great images in his photostream) also highlighted this. The problem, I find, is when used as a subject the composition and balance within the frame of curves or circles seems to always be better in thought than actually displayed.

The Getty Center is a very special center for displaying and preserving art. A beautiful architectural complex where the architecture is art. www.getty.edu/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Getty_Center The buildings at the Getty Center are made from concrete and steel with either travertine or aluminium cladding.[1]

Picnic on a Grassy Knoll at the Getty
Made by Viejito
At the Getty Center one can eat at the Garden Terrace Café or purchase some choice edibles (and potables) at one of the food carts. Apart from the tables, chairs and benches available, one can also sit down for an impromptu picnic on some of the lawns, where children can sometimes be seen rolling down the slopes...

seen from the Getty Center www.getty.edu been in California less than 36 hours and already taken many many photographs (though a sizable number are for multi-image compositions.) I don't know if I should be ashamed for taking so many! What do you think? Maybe it would be better instead to breathe more? Maybe.

Ol’ Henry Always Did Love Curvy Reclining Figures!...

Yes, as is immediately obvious, this is indeed a bronze by Henry Moore (1893-1986), which can be admired at the Getty Center’s Sculpture Garden: Draped Reclining Mother and Baby, 1983, 55 x 104½ x 57 in., 2580 lbs. (1.4 x 2.65 x 1.45 m, 1173 kg)

Or in my case? lay on the ground and have passer byes look at me strangely. Moar strangely. Heh. Shot last week at the Getty. I hear they have museum stuffs there. Rly. I had eyes for only the landscape, the flowers, the wildlife. Oh, and the water. Such fun to play with f/stops and fountains. Entertains others as well.

No I haven't abandoned my Flickr again. I got pretty busy with the last of my finals and getting back home for the break, but everything should be more chill now! Yet another from the Getty. Should be one of the last I upload from reserves; I'm hoping to shoot some new photos either tonight or tomorrow. So yay!

The Human Element

I thought it would be nice to add a human element to René Magritte’s 1967 bronze «La Folie des Grandeurs» and the young photographer just happened to be sitting there, pondering the transience of all things, or just preoccupied with her camera...
