città universitaria, la sapienza, rome. architect: marcello piacentini (general plan and main building). the rigid classicism of piacentini, godfather of roman fascist architecture, is a far cry from the elegance of 1920's swedish grace and the inherent modesty of tessenow's work in germany. in its simplistic monumentality and pompousness, much of fascist architecture in italy forms a perfect reflection of its time and surrounding culture...if honesty is modern architecture's first imperative, then these buildings are successful... so much for honesty indeed, history shows totalitarian regimes to be surprisingly honest: hitler was only too keen to share his horrific views on his jewish compatriots before he began killing them - he could barely shut up about it; and mussolini was equally open about his murderous designs on smaller neighbouring countries. it would seem that the hidden agenda is something pertaining to western democracy (the american quest for iraqi WMD and/or oil is too obvious to be mentioned here). maybe this is why it is so painful to see brilliant and sensitive masters like gio ponti, moretti, and libera supplying artistic legitimacy to fascism. probably, their hidden agenda was personal ambition. possibly, they were political imbeciles. but while architecture cannot exist separate from power, individual architects can and sometimes must choose to do just that.
