Museums, Galleries, and Memorials
- An incredible, and sobering experience, this is a worthwhile excursion. Not recommended for small children. Tours can be booked in Munich or at Dachau there, in English. While the tour is certainly of historical value, the original camp is not entirely preserved, as some of the structures from the WWII era have been destroyed. Three hours or more should be dedicated to exploring the camp, though to fully see the camp may require five or more hours.
- Deutsches Museum is located in and is one of the largest technical museums in the world. It has hand-on, interactive section for natural science, engineering, construction etc.
- Pinakotheken - The Alte Pinkothek features 15-18th century religious paintings, the Neue Pinakothek 19-20th century impressionist and expressionist art and the Pinakothek der Moderne has 20th century paintings, modern art, design and architecture sections.
- Statue of the Bavaria, Theresienhöhe 16 (U4 or U5 to ), 290671. This is a almost 20 m high statue, standing on the west border of next to the Hall of Fame. There is a small viewing platform inside her head. €3.00/€2.00
- Glyptothek The royal antique collection. It was expanded to the:
- National Antique Collection which stands across the street.
- National Museum of Egyptian Art In the Royal Residence.
- National Bavarian Museum
- Die Neue Sammlung - Museum of Applied Arts
- German Theatre Museum
- City Museum of Munich
- Jewish Museum Newly opened museum at St. Jakobsplatz with one permanent exhibition, which illuminates aspects of Jewish history and culture in Munich, and a range of changing exhibitions.
- Villa Stuck A private collection of Jugendstil art.
- Schack Gallery A private collection of 19th Century art.
- National Ethnographical Museum
- Lenbach House A gallery exhibiting numerous works of the Blauer Reiter school of German expressionist art (Kandinsky, Macke, Mark). Highly recommended!
- Haus der Kunst The main exhibition hall in Munich.
- The BMW Museum
Parks
- Englischer Garten - is in . Entrance is free, and it is a wonderful place to relax. Munich's second-biggest beer garden is located here, a nice place to stay and talk to the locals. Just drive to "Münchner Freiheit" or "Ostbahnhof" by S- or U-Bahn and take bus number 54 to "Chinesischer Turm".
- BUGA05 . The Bundesgartenschau 2005 is closed now. Not really sad, for €14 you did not see much. The area will be reconstructed and a park with a lake will remain. On a hot day take U2 to and don't forget your swimsuit!
- Hirschgarten is in
- The Munich Zoo is in
Palaces and Castles
- Schloss Nymphenburg is in .
- Residenz is in the , near to .
- Schloss Schleißheim . Not really in Munich, but you can take the S1 to to get there.

A Thousand Doors

The Neue Pinakothek (New Pinakothek) is an art museum in Munich, Germany. Its focus is European Art of the 18th and 19th century and is one of the most important museums of art of the nineteenth century in the world. Together with the Alte Pinakothek and the Pinakothek der Moderne it is part of Munich's Kunstareal (the art area). The new home of the Neue Pinakothek, opened in 1981. The museum was founded by the former King Ludwig I of Bavaria in 1853. The original building constructed by Friedrich von Gärtner and August von Voit was destroyed during World War II. The ruin of the Neue Pinakothek was demolished in 1949. Designed by architect Alexander Freiherr von Branca the new postmodern building opened in 1981. Ludwig began to collect contemporary art already as crown prince in 1809 and his collection has been steadily enlarged. When the museum was founded the separtation to the old masters in the Alte Pinakothek was fixed with the period shortly before the turn of the 19th century, which has become a prototype for many galleries. The delimitation to the modern painters displayed in the Pinakothek der Moderne was later fixed by taking the restart of Henri Matisse and the Expressionists into account (ca. 1900). Consequentially a painting of Matisse acquired by the Tschudi Contribution is displayed in the Pinakothek der Moderne. The so-called Tschudi Contribution in 1905/1914 led to an extraordinary collection of masterpieces of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Hugo von Tschudi, general director of the State Collections acquired 44 paintings, nine sculptures and 22 drawings, mostly from new French artists. But since public funds could not be used to purchase these works, Tschudi’s associates came up with the money from private contributions after his death in 1911. In 1915 the Neue Pinakothek became the property of the Bavarian state. A self-portrait of Vincent van Gogh was confiscated in 1938 by the Nazi regime as degenerate art and sold one year later.

The Future Is Now

Inside the modern art museum Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich Info The Pinakothek der Moderne is a modern art museum, situated in the city centre of Munich, Germany. Together with the Alte Pinakothek, the Neue Pinakothek and Museum Brandhorst it is part of Munich's Kunstareal (the art district). The building Designed by the German Architect Stephan Braunfels, the Pinakothek der Moderne was inaugurated in September 2002 after seven years of construction. The rectilinear facade, dominated by white and grey concrete, is interrupted by large windows and highrising columns, the latter supporting the extensive canopied roof. Each of the four corners of the building, connected by a central rotunda, is dedicated to a special collection. The Museum is thus divided into Art (Kunst), Architecture (Architektur), Design (Design) and Works on Paper (Graphik). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinakothek_der_Moderne Technique/Processing Developed from a single RAW photo. I had to lighten the walls by about 2.5 stops and manually adjust the white balance, to get the bright look. Just a bit of straightening was needed and i corrected the distortion with PTLens (always recommended for architectural shots), eventhough i used the Sigma 12-24mm, which produces only a very small amount of distortion, even at 12mm

BMW World
Made by Philipp Klinger Photography
View On Black Info BMW Welt (English - BMW World), is a multi-functional customer experience and exhibition facility of the BMW AG, located in Munich, Germany. In direct proximity to the BMW Headquarters and the Olympiapark, it is designed to present the current products of BMW, be a distribution center for BMW cars, and offer an event forum and a conference center. Designed by architects Coop Himmelb(l)au for BMW Group, the facility was constructed from August 2003 through Summer 2007. Originally conceived to be open and ready for World Cup 2006, it eventually opened on October 17, 2007 and deliveries commenced on October 23, 2007. The first customer to take delivery of a new BMW at the Welt was Jonathan Spira. Designed with an 800 kilowatt solar plant on its roof, the building does not have the boredom of a hall, it is not only a temple, but also a market place and a communication center and meeting place for knowledge transfer, said architect Prix at the opening ceremony. Technique/Processing DRI made from 2 exposures - one for the sky, one for the building. Colors are not processed - the building changes it's colors every 15 seconds

Brandhorst Museum

Highest Position in Explore #7 The building of Sauerbruch Hutton architects from Berlin is a long, two-storey, rectangular structure abutting a considerably higher, trapezium-shaped section that widens to the north. The precise contours of both parts are linked by a continuous ribbon glazing that culminates in the generous glazed area at the main entrance. Here a corner window running the full height of the building cuts boldly through the structure to the North West, ensuring that the spacious foyer with the museum ticket desk, bookshop and restaurant receive natural light from three sides and enjoy different views. All galleries have white walls and wooden floorboards of solid Danish oak which provide a neutral background for the artworks. Their lightness, colours and materials ensure a naturally airy atmosphere. The façade looks like an abstract painting and draws attention to the building’s function as an art museum. It comprises various layers with different functions. Online Guide: www.mimoa.eu/projects/Germany/Munich/Museum Brandhorst

Inside The Space Station
Made by Philipp Klinger Photography
Let's move from Prague to Munich :) After Prague we went to Munich on short notice Station Georg-Brauchle-Ring of the U1 line. Info Georg-Brauchle-Ring is an U-Bahn station in Munich on the U1. It is located below the Georg-Brauchle-Ring, part of Munich's Mittlerer Ring ring road system. It opened on 18 October 2003. Artist Franz Ackermann produced two coloured walls for the station entitled The Great Journey and consisting of 400 panels, each wall weighing 30 tons Technique/Processing Handheld - only 1/15s this time - so no problem at ISO 1000 - i really love the ISO Auto function of the D700 - you can concentrate on the subject instead of having to adjust your exposure/ISO every time. Developed from RAW in Photoshop - one exposure for the lights (especially the clocks - they were completely white out of cam) and one for the rest and then combined them by layer masking. A little contrast added, by applying a slight S-curve. After that i added some 'glamour glow' to the lights on the ceiling and their reflections to make them look softer.

Ripley: Well, somebody's gonna have to go out there. Take the next U-Bahn, go out there and patch in manually. Hudson: Oh yeah, sure! With those Aliens runnin' around? You can count me out. Hicks: Yeah I guess we can just count you out of everything, Hudson. Bishop: [speaking under Hicks] I'll go. Hudson: That's right, man. Bishop: I'll go. Hudson: Hey, why don't you go, man! Bishop: [more loudly] I'll go. Ripley: What? Bishop: I'll go. I mean, I'm the only one qualified to drive the U-Bahn anyway. Hudson: Yeah right, man, Bishop should go. [Vasquez looks at Hudson with disgust] Hudson: Good idea! Bishop: Believe me, I'd prefer not to. I may be synthetic, but I'm not stupid. [borrowed from Aliens - 1986] Shot taken at U-Bahn Station Olympiaeinkaufszentrum - Munich. Somehow this station was quite difficult to process. Although it might not look challenging I found it difficult to find the proper balance between the various elements of the architecture, especially the yellow elements vs. the silver part was not easy. I hope you like this version.

Buerozentrum Nymphenburgerstrasse 3 - #2

Office Center - Bürozentrum Nymphenburger Straße 3 The project is divided into five buildings, some of which are interconnected. The first building raised on Nymphenburger Strasse is a 10-story high-rise through which an open passageway leads into a quiet, planted inner courtyard. The remaining buildings are grouped around a pavilion located in the center of the courtyard. The office ensemble on Stiglmaierplatz is in a central yet tranquil location. Mostly undisturbed by trends, Walter & Bea Betz have created buildings that continually emphasize the value of atmospheric qualities that sensually convey architecture to its users. Their fields of work are office and administrative buildings, school and university buildings, residential buildings and complexes, and cultural facilities. U-Bahn Station Westfriedhof The subway station Westfriedhof is located at the border of the districts Neuhausen-Nymphenburg and Moosach. It was planned by the architecture office Auer-Weber and the municipal unit, the light concept was made by Ingo Maurer and his team. 11 large lamps which measure 3.80 meters on the diameter bath the station in blue, red and yellow light, whereby they structure the platform into different colour shadings. The walls and the ceiling are drenched in blue light and lend the station the character of a cave, whereas the platform itself is rather bright. Despite the spotlights there are no dark corners. The rough imposing walls come from the little-treated milled slot walls, between which the station has been excavated. Guide: www.mimoa.eu/projects/Germany/Munich/U-Bahnhof Westfriedhof

. Residential Tower Park Plaza - Munich Architect: Steidle + Partner, Munich Excerpt from the Architecture Guide neues München: The tower is an important element of the urbanistic concept worked out by Otto Steidle for Theresienhöhe. It towers well above the surrounding buildings and in its brilliant colors sets a distinctive mark as a reminiscence of the former fair tower demolished in the 60s. The facade is distinguished by the irregularity projecting , generously designed balconies. The pool of overall residential offers in the quarter is outlined by 89 units. The lights are on in the residential tower while the offices below are integrated in the normal occurences of district, of the town. A day care center for children is accommodated on the ground floor of the tower. The lighting concept for the interior stairwells was developed by Ingo Maurer.

A Study on Convergence

The Detective: Nice Place. Terrific view. Wow. The Player: You didn't come up here to tell me that. The Detective: You saw the man in the U-Bahn. And you saw the man against the brick wall. And you know it's the same man. Yet you didn't identify him. Are you afraid of him? The Player: No. The Detective: Are you afraid of me? The Player: No. I just don't like you. [Quote borrowed from The Driver - 1978] This is a shot from the U-Bahn station in Lehel. I already posted one pic of this station in my early flickr days. Whether this shot is better than the old one is a question of personal taste. But one thing is for sure, the walls lost in course of the time their nice clean white and became dirty, but of course not as dirty as my socks.

Funeral Parlour Munich-Riem

Funeral Parlour in Munich - Riem The funerary complex at Munich-Riem by Andreas Meck and Stephan Koppel is a distinguished addition to the modern Northern European tradition of buildings that honour rites of passage with quiteness and thoughtfulness. The simple, clear buildings, together with the rough enclosing, form a place of silence. Three courtyards divide the lot. The buildings are classified as serious, with oak, steel and stone Corte (concrete and stone) determining the image. All materials are massive and left untreated. Under a stone roof, one can find the parlour: a smooth oak cube. www.mimoa.eu/projects/Germany/Munich/Funeral Parlour Munich-Riem

Hello, Again
Made by Natascha2011
Slowly that scent reaches me, The perfume you wear I can't forget. Floating so lightly 'pon the air, Just like the smoke from a cigarette. I just turned around and there you were, Returning almost faster than you'd gone. My, but times been good to you, Sleek and graceful as a swan. And by the way, hello again. I'm so pleased to have your company. We'll count the stars under misty sky, And watch them fall into the sea. Your voice so whispers soft and smooth, Telling me tales of a human cloud. Who walked a thousand miles, Just to touch their ladies gowns. A noble thought, there's no doubt, And I must confess I can't compete. Clouds that walked a thousand miles, Just to touch their ladies feet. ~ Tommy Bolin ~

BMW World II

Viewing On Black is highly recommended. Another shot from the BMW World in Munich. It's shot from the bridge, which you can see in the upper right side of As i already mentoned, the color of the building's illumination changes every few seconds. So here it is in blue. Technique/Processing Manually blended 3 exposures for the expanded dynamic range. After this i cross processed it in Photoshop (I know - it's not usual to apply cross processing to architecture shots, let alone to ones made at night - but i really liked the colors, especially on the metal panelling in front)

Capt. Jack Aubrey: Do you want to see a guillotine in Piccadilly? Crew: No! Capt. Jack Aubrey: Want to call that raggedy-ass Napoleon your king? Crew: No! Capt. Jack Aubrey: You want your children to take a Munich U-Bahn? Crew: NO! [quote borrowed from Master and Commander - 2003] Shot taken at the U-Bahn Westfriedhof in Munich. I already posted some shots of this station (my favourite one for its atmosphere) but this time I tried some new techniques. This is a HDRI panorama shot made of 3 shots taken vertically (so a total of 9) merged with Pano-Pro. I was very curious to see, how the perspective turns out. Hope you like the result.

@ the Pinakothek der Moderne - Munich Guard #1: What are you, a monk? Guard #2: I have a woman. Guard #1: What do you tell her? Guard #2: I tell her I'm a salesman. Guard #1: So then, if you spot me coming around that corner...you just gonna walk out on this woman? Not say good bye? Guard #2: That's the discipline. Guard #1: That's pretty vacant, you know. Guard #2: Yeah, it is what it is. It's that or we both better go do something else, pal. Guard #1: I don't know how to do anything else. Guard #2: Neither do I. Guard #1: I don't much want to either. Guard #2: Neither do I. (borrowed from Heat - 1995)

View On Black - Attention, you might get sucked into your display ;-) Metro Station Marienplatz in Munich. Mirrored in Photoshop The D700 was really great-to-have in the metro stations - i only had to use ISO 900 here, but in other stations i even had to crank it up to 12800. No way i could have gotten all those shots handheld with another camera. If you wonder, why most of my metro photos have an exposure time of 1/15sec - it's the time I've set as a minimum for the auto ISO function. Have a nice weekend!
