Haji-Ali Dargah & Ma-Hajiani Dargah, Mumbai - India, Mumbai - India
Made by Humayunn N A Peerzaada
The 'Saint Ma-Hajiani' Dargah or Mausoleum was built in the year 1908 as a token of devotion and reverence to glorify her pious name and sacred memory by Haji Ismail Hasham, ship-owner and pioneer of Indian shipping, who died on 20th september 1912 and was burried according to his last wishes in the west side grave of this tomb. The 'Haji Ali Dargah' (Hindi: हाजी अली दरगाह) is a mosque and dargah (tomb) located on an islet off the coast of Worli in Mumbai. Lying as it does in the heart of the city, the dargah is one of the most recognizable landmarks of Mumbai. The dargah was built in 1431 by a wealthy Muslim merchant and saint named Haji Ali who renounced all his wordly possessions before making a pilgrimage to Mecca. Legend has it that Haji Ali died on his way to Mecca and his body, in its casket, floated back to Mumbai. However, some believe that Haji Ali drowned at the place where the dargah stands today. As many as 40,000 pilgrims visit the shrine on Thursdays and Fridays. People from all faiths visit & pray at the dargah The whitewashed structure occupies an area of 4,500 metres, and an 85 foot (26 m) tower is the architectural highlight of the edifice. The tomb within the mosque is covered by a brocaded red and green chaddar (tomb cover sheet). It is supported by an exquisite silver frame. The main hall has marble pillars embellished with coloured mirror work: blue, green, yellow chips. The ninety-nine names of Allah are also written on the pillars. Most of the structure is corroded due to saline winds blowing from the surrounding sea. It was last repaired in the 1960s, but civil engineers say the structure is beyond further repair. The Dargah Trust is awaiting permission to raze the structure and rebuild it with Makrana marble, the same marble used to build the Taj Mahal. www.haji-ali.com en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haji_Ali_Dargah

Dementia
Made by Humayunn N A Peerzaada
Elders just need a little understanding and lots of love from loved ones. This pic is just a small way to spread awareness on this dreaded and probably lesser known ailment called Dementia. Dementia is a neurological illness in which the patient suffers progressive loss of memory, judgment, and awareness. It may be accompanied by problems with speech, social behaviors, toileting, waking up in night and walking. Many a time they feel and imagine visuals of people in and around their room and house. They develop their own imaginary characters, develop stories around their characters and keep seeing them during days and nights. The patient is frequently unaware of changes that family members notice as declines in daily living skills and memory, or alterations in personality and reasoning ability. Since there are many different kinds of dementia, accurate diagnosis is important. Some forms of dementia are treatable, while others are not. Alzheimer's Disease is the most common cause of dementia in the elderly. The dementia patient requires progressively intensified care and management by the family or other caregivers. As patients lose the ability to remember important events and people, manage finances, navigate and drive, prepare meals, and maintain safety, family members must provide assistance. Often, patients are unable to comprehend their own inability to function, and may exhibit emotional and behavioral symptoms, which are difficult for loved ones to understand. Strong support and education of the caregivers enables the patient to remain in the home as long as possible, with enhanced quality of life for everyone in the family.

In India the lamp is an integral part of all religious celebrations. Myth has it that Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth, blesses those who propitiate her by lighting lamps in their homes. The light also symbolises knowledge which is achieved by the removal of the darkness of ignorance. Brass lamps of various shapes and sizes are used in Indian homes, particularly during religious events. The two lamps shown here are multi-level standing lamps and are from South India. The standing lamps like these (single or multi level) are called 'kutthuvilakku' and at each level is a bowl with five beaks with a lighted wick in each.. You can also have five small lamps at each level. Sitting on top of the lamps is the 'hamsa' or the swan which is the carrier of the Goddess Laxmi. You can also have small religious figurines carved at that level. Originally these lamps are supposed to have been rooted into the ground but later became detached portable pieces. In this image, besides the two lamps, there are electrically lit 'balls' lying on the ground. On the left and behind the lamps is a stall built like a stair case that always has an odd number of 'steps'. This one had 13 if I remember right. On each step are kept small figurines of various Hindu Gods and Goddesses. On the top most step is the statue of the God being worshipped.

Thirst Wrencher
Made by fatmanwalking
Its getting hot, HOT in Bombay. It was hot in Pilani. Those days of cribbing about the intense heat and dryness. Those days are gone. Now its worse (yeah, the grass is always greener on the other side)... Its hot and humid. You sit back on a chair, and the back of your shirt gets drenched in a minute. You step away from the area under the fan, and you're sweating. You walk to the loo, you lose more fluid through your skin than anywhere else. In a coupla words : Argh. ARGH. And what's shown in this photo is surely not the right way to quench your thirst. Fizzy drinks : The bane of human beings. Unnecessary calories and in no way are these thirst quenchers. And yet, every damn celebrity advertises for these worthless products. Be it the brilliant Amir Khan, the businessman who can't act, Shahrukh Khan, or those eleven incompetents who make up the Indian Cricket Team (maybe more than eleven. Coz nowadays, even the ones who've been dropped are getting paid to act in those over-hyped advertisements) About the shot: A very common shot on Flickr. So nothing new. Just used the built in flash and did some stupid PSing which the chimps from the zoo would do with more ease than this bumbling behemoth. The title makes no sense, but there was no song title in my music collection which matched the shot, and all my creative juices have flown out as perspiration I guess.

Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of
Made by fatmanwalking
After a lapse of ten or more years, I amble onto Juhu beach. I keep walking as my mind tries to register the sight. I walk into the middle of a wave of humanity, and as it sinks in, I stop. And stare. And take in everything I see. Stretching to both ends of the horizon is the strip of sand. But there is no sand to be seen. Just people. Young, old, wet, dry, happy, pissed, sweaty people. I cannot pinpoint the spot where I used to build sandcastles as a kid. It's pointless. 'Coz there is no space for castles anymore. There's just frikkin' people everywhere. On a tuesday evening! In the water, in the muck, in the dry sand, on the edge of the road. The sky is littered with flying monkeys and parachutes. Kids whiz around carrying wooden swords (oh, they haven't changed a bit) and releasing fist-sized helicopters into the air, and then gawping at them as their little minds try to calculate where they'll land. Grandfathers chase the little ones lest they disappear into the mob. Parents release the tensions of life as they lie on whatever little patches of land they have been able to earmark and call their own, for the time being. The horses have gone to emptier pastures. The sea breeze still smells good as it hits my face. I exhale. Title Dedication : U2

As I was walking towards my building from the one next door, I noticed that there were some bright red leaves in the garden which were not there when I left for Chicago less than a month back. I went in the garden and saw that the entire plant, leaves, buds and stems were a brilliant red and it had very very tiny flowers (less than half an inch across) which were the same sexy red on the outside and a lovely off white (on the inside. It was magical. Although the sky was heavily over cast and dusk was fast approaching I rushed to my building, picked up my 7D , mounted the 100 mm macro and called out to my teenaged daughter if she would like to come see me photographing some lovely new flowers. She came, never having seen me shoot outside the house before and was fascinated by the details of the flowers, leaves and dew drops magnified magically on the LCD monitor. Here are some of the shots.

As we go on We remember All the times we Had together And as our lives change From whatever We will still be Friends Forever So if we get the big jobs And we make the big money When we look back now Will our jokes still be funny? Will we still remember everything we learned in school? Still be trying to break every single rule Will little brainy Bobby be the stockbroker man? Can Heather find a job that won't interfere with her tan? I keep, keep thinking that it's not goodbye Keep on thinking it's a time to fly And this is how it feels La, la, la, la: Yeah, yeah, yeah La, la, la, la: We will still be friends forever Will we think about tomorrow like we think about now? Can we survive it out there? Can we make it somehow? I guess I thought that this would never end And suddenly it's like we're women and men Will the past be a shadow that will follow us 'round? Will these memories fade when I leave this town I keep, keep thinking that it's not goodbye Keep on thinking it's a time to fly explore #97

This will be the first out of a few images that I would like to share. Thanks to all for your views, comments, faves and time. This is the exact location of this shoot. It's been a while since I did late evening / night shoots. So I chose to walk the promenade along Powai lake. Early part of the evening wasn't interesting. But as the twilight settled and the city lights came up, there was lots to shoot.

Shadow City - A look at Dharavi.
Made by lecercle
Ramshackle corrugated tin, plywood, plastic, pukkah bricks, sheets of asbestos, sweat, toil, people and garbage make Dharavi, just like piles of earth, sand, clay and other materials make ant hills. Dharavi and many other slums like it are nothing but human ant colonies built by legions of our urban poor. They are places which are at same time sombre, moving, joyful and interesting .Push and pull factors, bring people from our villages here everyday in search for something better. They settle here much to the neglect of our apathetic eyes. But under the squalor is great spirit and ingenuity. I went looking for this spirit in this place most people refer to as ‘Asia’s largest slum’ but I would prefer to call the ‘Heart of Mumbai’. trivialmatters.blogspot.com/2006/03/shadow-city-look-at-d...

Mumbai Monsoon Magic
Made by Anindo Ghosh
Monsoon in Mumbai is an odd mix - miserable if you are a commuter, yet awe-inspiring if you are an observer of nature. Mumbai essentially has two seasons, sweat and swim - and the world has seen many images of this swimming season during the flash floods of 26th July 2005. Yet, if one will take a moment to look upwards, especially around dawn, the sight is one to behold! This photo is one of a series taken just before dawn, at the magic moment when the reflected light from the sun hits the clouds before the sun itself rises over the horizon. No spectacular tourist spot this - these photos were shot from the window of a fourth-floor apartment in Bandra's narrow and winding Chapel Road. This vertical composition was uploaded in context of some discussion on the of the same subject.

When all those bouquets started piling up, I thought it would be an opportunity for me to use the next day to take lots of pictures of diferent flowers but when I started out I realised that but for the roses given by the missus, it was Gerberas and Gerberas all the way. In many different colours but Gerberas nevertheless. And so often have they been photographed here that anything I did seemed like I had seen it a zilion times before. Nevertheless, having started I decided to go ahead and finish the job . . .

Bandra Worli Sea Link
Made by Aalok Gaitonde
Overview of my city, Mumbai(Bombay/VABB). Seen here is the under construction Bandra Worli Sea Link, Bandra, Worli and the rest of South Mumbai. The Bandra Worli Sea Link will be an 8-lane, cable-stayed bridge with pre-stressed concrete viaduct approaches, which will link Bandra and the western suburbs of Mumbai with Worli and central Mumbai, and is the first phase of the proposed West Island Freeway system. The Rs. 1306 crore project of Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is being executed by Hindustan Construction Company and is likely to be completed by December 2008. The Sea Link will enable speedy travel between Bandra and Worli. Taken onboard an Emirates flight EK505 (A Boeing 777-300, A6-EMT) enroute to Manchester via Dubai.

Ranwar Village - Heritage under threat
Made by Anindo Ghosh
Ranwar Village is a tiny hamlet that time forgot - tucked away in the midst of buzzing Bandra, the Queen of Suburbs of Mumbai. The houses here date back a century or more, and the villagers have lived here peacefully for generations, ignoring the big-city madness just a few hundred yards away. Now the city has begun to encroach on their way of life, with empty plots and even some of the old houses being replaced by modern multi-storied buildings, a jarring contrast to the aesthetics of the red tiled eaves. More than one villager came up during this shoot, and spoke passionately of the heritage of Ranwar, and how they would very much like life in this village to remain as it has been, safe from the predations of builders and modernization.

Independence, Chai and a Letter Box in Bombay
Made by Anoop Negi
15th August is Independence from the colonial British Empire that ruled much of the world at one stage. As is the rule of civilisations, the British one, now lies perilously close to being a non entity and ignored by all and sundry except their tabloid press. History is paved with such great rises and falls. India continues to exist after centuries of invasions and extortion from the Huns to the Moslems to the British and will hopefully last by its sheer weight of numbers. Bombay, Elphinstone West, A letter to your forefather. ----- I like . Please write a letter on your feelings and opinions on this day and post it here...........;-)) For Indians this is obligatory !;-) DSC_5914 from nef reworked with Iday ver 2

Mordor
Made by fatmanwalking
Dedicated to J.R.R. Tolkien and his epic, The Lord Of The Rings. And, as an addition to my recent fatalistic cribbing, raise yer hands all those who feel we're gonna have many Mordors dotting all of earth, very soon. Might not look as cool as Tolkien's (or Jackson's) Mordor, but will be equally hot. Btw, if you look closely, my version of Sauron's eye has two eyes :P. And they're not directly above the tower (which, unlike Barad-dur, is made of rods and other steel things), rather, a lil to the left in your view. Sauron being pushed off his mighty perch? Can that happen in today's world? Also, almost no editing. Just raised the sharpness. Surprisingly, I didn't touch the contrast slider this time around.

Dharmendra Gohil, Actor, Mumbai - India
Made by Humayunn N A Peerzaada
View On Black My experiment with texture continues ... This picture was shot some 2 years back and it never got into the stream in the models section ... I was just going through the models picture and thought Dharmendra's picture was never put in the stream at all ... the same time I was learning and working on the textures ... I never thought i would use this picture in such manner ... looking by the comments and my friends liking the picture so much I can just say that both pic and the texture complemented each other. thnks so much my friends for being so inspiring and motivating.
