The Main Gate which leads into Mdina. The history of Mdina is as old as the history of Malta. It was originally built as a fortified settlement in the Bronze Age, but the Phoenicians went one step further, added a wall and named the city Malet, which means shelter. Under Roman rule the city prospered and grew to four times the size it is today. It also underwent another name change – this time to Melita. Finally in 870 AD the Saracins took over and built new fortified walls and bastions. They also changed the name to its current one, Mdina, which roughly translated means “city surrounded by walls.” Mdina’s importance stemmed from the Viceroy of Sicily’s rule. He granted the city the right of internal autonomy via the “universita” who were a group of nobles who watched over Mdina and the rest of Malta.

Malta – Mdina: St. Pawl’s Cathedral

The facade include, like the other churches of Malta, two clocks : one which shows the real time, and another one which exhibits a wrong time : it is to cheat the devil who, wanting to divert the faithful during the offices, doesn't know exactly what time is it. Maltese people are catholic and practice at 98% : the religious presence is seen everywhere : on the front of the houses, in the form of statuettes of the Virgin, in the names given to the houses, on the posters and religious texts placed in the buses.

St. Paul's Cathedral, Mdina, Malta

Most ornate cathedral of the trip so far. Every inch is coverered with decoration of some type, including big slabs in the floor dedicated to every church official/important Mdina personage of the past few hundred years. (cathedral was built right around 1700) Many religious things in Malta are dedicated to St. Paul since he was shipwrecked on Malta in AD 60, as a Roman prisoner.

The building in the foreground is the cathedral, in the background is the Cathedral museum. As is customary in Malta, historic building are guarded by two cannons, usually taken from the many fortifications adorning the island's coast. Perhaps even today they remind us to treasure, and guard our multi-cultural heritage which makes Malta so special.
