The Trail Winds Away

The Trail Winds Away

Knowing the Sunday was going to be a 6000 foot descent over 6 miles didn't inspire us or our knees with a lot of delight. Finding out that the trail pretty much contours along for the first mile and a half or two without losing more than a couple hundred feet of elevation almost made me nervous! What awaited us? Well, it wasn't like dropping down a cliff, but it was close. some of this trail was ridiculously steep. I sure felt sorry for the people going up!

In the Baldy Bowl

Stopping for a breath while climbing the face of the Baldy Bowl for the first time. It was too steep to stop to remove the pack for any reason, and I ran out of water before I got to the top. You can see my video camera on its rifle sling looped up out of the way on the pack where it was easy to retrieve (you can watch my video here). Photo by Fritz.

My famous (and highly coveted in some circles) vintage Italian teak-shafted Camp ice axe on the right, my new Grivel G12 crampons in the foreground (fastened to my Vasque Cascade mountaineering boots, purchased circa 1982 and resoled twice)..

Reid and me at Baldy's summit. The weather was just right for a day hike (except for the nipping wind)

On the summit of Mt. Baldy. This one i thought looked almost muscular in it's contortions.
