Portland at Warp Speed

Another shot taken at Mt. Tabor in Portland, OR. I was using my 55-200 VR lens for this shot. I started the exposure with the lens focused at 55mm. I triggered the shutter wirelessly to reduce vibrations. I really love that the small version of the horizon is in focus and draws you attention because it is sharp. And the huge buildings draw your attention as well because of their size. I tried another shot like this centered on the street (which is on the left side of this photo), but I found out that it looks a lot better to have something dark in the middle. How: The whole exposure was 10 seconds. After 4 seconds, I began carefully zooming in for 3 seconds (rotate the zoom part of the lens at a constant rate and do your best not to shake the camera in the process), the remaining 3 seconds caused the large, out-of-focus version of the buildings.

I love the mountains, they don't love me

Mt Hood to the east. I stopped at Mt Tabor Park to gawk at the mountain which has been hiding in clouds lately. They found one of the climbers on Mt Hood today. He had died. The other two climbers are still missing. I've been following this story closely; I think most people in the area have. I was really hoping they would be found alive. It's been a brutal week of weather, especially at 11,000 feet up. I love the mountains but they don't love me.

I haven't seen the mountain in 9 days due to a series of storm rolling through the Pacific Northwest. Three climbers have been missing on the mountain for over a week now. As I took this photo I hoped that they had been found today but the only news still is no news. I can't imagine what those men are going through. I do hope they're in snow caves and still alive. I hope. View from the east side of Mt Tabor

the sleepy mountain and the strange moon

Mt Hood sticks his head above the low clouds on the horizon while the full moon, with the eclipse already in progress, begins rising in the sky. The cloudy day turned suddenly very sunny and mild just in time for widespread eclipse viewing. Hallelujah!

I missed the pink

Mt Hood from the east side of Mt Tabor Park. There's been feet & feet & feet of snow dumped in the mountain this week (and lots of rain in Portland). A rare moment when the clouds parted...
