Mt St Helens 2007

Mt St Helens 2007

Well, I have once again completed the long strenuous climb to the Mount Saint Helens crater rim. Although, this year it was not nearly as strenuous as last year. I believe I prepared myself enough to have plenty of energy to make it. Not to mention last year I made the ascent at the end of October and there was some fresh snow on the mountain as well as bone chilling 40-50 mile an hour winds. That may have had something to do with it. I think this will become an annual thing for me. It was surprising to see how much the lava domes within the crater had changed in just a year. There was continuous steam pouring out of three vents and the sulfur could be smelled just at the rim. There was also a minor rock slide that was heard on the other side of the dome. I made myself spend a lot more time at the rim this time taking various shots. Of all the ones I took, this was definitely my favorite. I thought it captured the character of Mount Saint Helens very well. Until next year... By the way, as you may or may not know, the sky is given that deep blue color through the us of a rotating polarized filter. Which is the best gift a wife could give a photographer husband :-) Check out my new website: www.danphotoman.com/

Mt. St. Helens - Loowit Trail - Camp

Mt. St. Helens - Loowit Trail - Camp

Backpacked a portion of the Loowit Trail (#216) that circles the whole base of Mt. St. Helens. We got a late start on the day and ended up hiking in the dark until midnight (while getting lost on a glacier and trying to cross an ash canyon) This is our hastily set camp on the western flank of the volcano, just above the tree line at about 5,000 feet altitude. Oddly enough, even at midnight, it was still over 80 degrees fahrenheit! The Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument is located within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, in SW Washington State.

Can't resist poking some fun at myself... There's nothing like showing up at the trailhead with two left cycling shoes... There ain't no way you can wear a left shoe on the right foot and survive a 15 mile trip. It's a long/short story of having to change the cleat on the bottom of the shoe and getting the shoes mixed up the night before the ride. Anyway the sandal didn't work out that badly! Believe it or not!

This shot is taken from Monitor Ridge on the south face. The rock outcropping is a fairly prominent feature that can be easily seen on most topo maps. Mt. Hood can be seen at the left, along the horizon line.
