Google's New "River View" Service To Go Live Next Week
Made by smokeonit
unconfirmedsources.com/index.php Unconfirmed sources are reporting that Internet giant Google will unveil a new mapping service called River View. The service will allow users to view the shores of every navigable river in the United States. The interface will be accessible through Google Maps much like the existing service Street View. To create the service Google outfitted a small navy of boats to survey thousands of miles of shoreline. The craft are equipped with cameras and GPS receivers similar to the cars used to make the Street View service. The boats have been at work for months and are reportedly close to finishing their task. We are very excited about this new service. Says Google spokes person Cindy Clayton. Rivers users of all types have been asking for service like this and it's a natural extension of our existing Street View service. We are pleased by the reviews it's gotten from the closed beta testers and are certain the public will find it useful and fun. Environmentalists and watershed preservation groups are especially excited about the Project. This is a huge deal. Says Samantha Gibbons of the Michigan Watershed Advisory Group. We are always looking for way to communicate the importance of rivers too the public and this service will greatly help our efforts. It will also allow us to make a systematic study of the quality of rivers in watersheds all across the country. Not everybody is pleased with the River View program and it has already attracted the attention of privacy groups in much the same way the Street View service had. Privacy groups are concerned that River View cameras may have illegally infringed on river property owners rights.

Last week I volunteered to help out the gym at work and take some headshots for the intranet. They wanted something a bit better than you'd get with a point-and-shoot, and I wanted some practice taking pictures of people other than and Tessa. Since the shots may need to be used in a variety of situations, including small thumbnails on the website, I opted for low-contrast lighting, using a ring flash to kill the shadows and side-lights to add highlights. I had the ABR800 ring-flash on camera without a tripod, so after the hour-and-a-half session my right-arm was pretty tired. In the end 22 people flowed through, which only gave me a few minutes per person. Some of them were only on a quick break in between training sessions, others uncomfortable and not wanting to be there. Overall, I think the results came out reasonably well, considering. Strobist Info: Same as last week's test shots. 430exIIs in 1x4 strip boxes, left and right. 580exIIs on to background. ABR800 w. 30 moon unit on camera for fill. Triggered by Pocket Wizards.

MTV Hazmat 5
Made by YFD
Mountain View Fire Department recently took delivery of this brand new Pierce Hazmat rig. By recently I mean it arrived in Mountain View from Pierce on Thursday night. The rig replaces the old HEAT 5 rig. While the team of Mountain View fire fighters handling incidents will still be known as the HEAT - Hazardous Emergency Action Team - the new rig will be known as Hazmat 5. It will likely be a couple of months befoe the rig is loaded and equipped and put into service. The rig is a 2010 Perice built on a Quantum chassis. The rig features a Detroit Diesel 16l engine, 25KW PTO generator and Will Burt NightScan light tower and electric awnings on both sides of the rig. One neat feture (I thought) was the kitty litter dispenser... sorry, the Absorball dispenser. There is a hopper in the right rear coffin box on the roof where you can put about 250lbs of Absorball, and the hopper feeds down a chute to an outlet in the right rear compartment. Just put a five gallon bucket at the bottom of the chute, open it up to get as much as you need and away you go... very nifty.

Stranger #060 in my Stangers Project

Goldinha - Mountain View, California. I saw this crumpled mass near the post office and as I approached I found that mass to be Goldinha in her wheelchair. She never looked up, she was as uninterested in others as others were in her. I continued by but was torn between just staying my course or turning back. I decided for the latter. I spoke with her and asked if I could photograph her for my project, she thought for a second and said yes. Her expression never wavered from what you see here. I kneeled down because I was sure she was unable to look up. I tried to talk with her but she did not seem interested in idle conversation. My last attempt was to ask the origin of her name but she just said It's from here.... She asked for nothing but I gave her what was in my pocket hoping it might help in some way. Thanks Goldinha for allowing me to take this photograph...

Melanie - Mountain View, California. Her eyes... again, it's one of those times where I'm strolling around, searching for the next stranger... BINGO!!! Such pretty green eyes. She was sitting in the light rain talking with friends at the market. I explained the project and she said sure, no problem, I stepped back a bit, came in tight with the 24-70, checked the BG and began. At first she would not look directly at the camera but I coaxed her into looking my way. Glad I did because I got the shot I was after... I told her that too and she smiled, I bet she's heard it all before :o) She said there was a little girl with the biggest blue eyes she has ever seen and pointed me to her last where abouts, no luck on finding her though. Oh well, you can't get too greedy! I thanked her, we shook hands and I made my way to the next stranger. Thanks Melanie.

MTV Engine 6
Made by YFD
In April 2008 Mountain View Fire Department ordered 7 new Pierce Quantum Fire Engines and a new TDA Ladder Truck. The first units arrived in Mountain View the last week of June, 2009. Seen here in early July the first units are undergoing testing and being used to train the fire crews on their use. Here we see the first of Mountain Views new Fire Engines, Engine 6. Engine 6 is historically a reserve unit, and it's liley when all seven of the new engines arrive engines 1-5 will be assigend to the five Mountain View Stations and engine 6 and Engine 7 will continue to be reserve engines. This is of course a 2009 Pierce Quantum Pumper. The full set of photos of Mountaion View's new Engine 6 and Truck 1 can be seen at www.yourfiredepartment.org/MTV/New_Rigs.html

MTV Rescue 1
Made by YFD
Mountain View Fire Department took delivery of this medium Rescue rig in May, 2010. Staff training is scheduled for the first two weeks of July and it will likely enter service shortly after that. The rig was built by Pierce on a shortened Quantum chassis. This rig and the new Hazmat delivered in June, together with the seven new Pierce Engines and a truck Mountain View received last summer marks the complete replacement of the entire Mountain View Fire Apparatus fleet, all with new Pierce Quantum rigs. Some effort was taken by MTV and Pierce to ensure that the cabs of all ten rigs are identical... quite a feat since the Truck and the Hazmat were made in different facilities from the engines. Like the Hazmat this rig features a 16 liter Detroit Diesel engine, 25KW PTO generator and Will Burt Nightscan lighting tower.

Mountain View Fire Department recently handled a 3rd alarm fire on Ortega Ave following a soldering accident during some plumbing work. The fire got inside the walls and was difficult to find or track. In addition to Mountain View Fire Department units from Palo Alto Fire, Santa Clara County Fire Department and from Moffett Field the NASA Ames Research Center Fire Department were on scene during the incident. View the whole set which is available at the YourFiredepartment.org web site on the Ortega IC web page! Mountain View Truck is at this time a Seagrave TDA. A new truck has been ordered from Pierce and is actually in Mountain View being prpeared to put into service. This may be the old Seagrave Trucks last actual fire.

#119 - Fitty ƒ/1.2 Edition
Made by David KM
Josh - Mountain View, California. So here it is... sold the 24-70L. Superb lens but once I got my first prime it was like some kinda crack for me. It might be because my first prime was the 135L, it is surgical sharp. Then came the 35L followed by the 100L Mac. Now I was a prime fiend. I tried to put the 24-70 on and love it but it's hard to take the 35 off the camera. Eventually it stayed home gathering dust while the others got to come out and play... next stop Ebay. The beauty of an L lens is that they retain their value and I got more than I originally paid for it. So here is my replacement for my zoom, my new 50L f/1.2. Lush, love, licious... luxury. Josh was more than happy to allow me to test it out on him. Thanks for participating Josh.

NASA Ames Research Center Fire Department serves a dual role on the former Moffett Field Naval Air Station. They provide structure and fire prevention programs for the various buildings that make up the facility, and they provide Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting Services for the airfield which is still active. The Station is constructed with two sets of apparatus bays, one facing the runways with a half dozen apparatus bays, the other with three bays facing the street. The Street facing bays house Fire Engines 4 and 5, and Ladder Truck 6. The air side bays house ARFF Engines 7, 8, 9 and 10, and some other equipment. Kattie - Mountain View, California. This is Kattie (white t-shirt), she was our waitress for the evening. I have posted in the comments a close-up. I don't want anyone thinking I am posting candids. I took this picture of Kattie to show her at work. I looked over and she was in the perfect spotlight... just like she was stopped in time. There was a Shark's Stanley cup playoffs this evening and it was a mad house. I like this pub because they hire anyone with a genuine Irish brogue. Being as I am half Irish (really), it warms my heart. Love the count down timer to March 17th. I have been wanting to do a waitress shot but something with a twist from the normal. This is what I had been after. Getting close to 100. Thanks Kattie :o)

Pete's Pond
Made by konaboy
I built this pond and garden in the early 90's in Mountain View, California. The web was just getting started at the time, and I created Pete's Pond Page as a test while working for a computer company creating an early web browser. (These old web pages are now hosted by someone else -- I don't maintain them anymore.) The current owners of the house contacted me while I happened to be in California, so I stopped in to see the pond and offer some advice on the filtration system and keeping the koi happy. It was good to see the fish and garden again, and learn everything was in good hands.

Stranger #050 in my Stangers Project - The Big 5-Oh!!!

Jen - Mountain View, California. Meet Jen, she was selling tofu of all kinds. She had an infectious smile and I was drawn to her. I waited in line patiently until she was through with her customers, quite a few customers I might add. I explained what I was doing and asked for her participation. She said ok, so I lined up the shot I was after. I told her I thought she had a great smile and from that point on she just started laughing uncontrollably. I think she might have thought I was hitting on her, so did the other women around… Fortunately my wife was right around the corner and all the confusion soon disappeared ;o) Thanks Jen, you do have a beautiful smile!
