Auckland Harbour Bridge, NZ
Made by Thad Roan - Bridgepix
Bridgepixing from the summit of an extinct volcano Mount Eden, with a apnorama view of downtown Auckland, the harbor, and the Auckland Harbour Bridge. The Auckland Harbour Bridge is an eight-lane, box truss motorway bridge over the Waitemata Harbour, joining Saint Marys Bay in Auckland City with Northcote in North Shore City, New Zealand. The bridge is part of State Highway 1 and the Auckland Northern Motorway. It is also the second longest road bridge in New Zealand, and the longest road bridge in the North Island. The bridge has a total length of 1,020 m (3,348 ft), with a main span of 243.8 m, rising 43.27 m above high water allowing access to the deepwater port at the Chelsea Sugar Refinery west of it (nowadays one of the few wharves needing such access west of the bridge). Nippon clip-ons' The bridge was originally built with four lanes for traffic. Owing to the rapid expansion of suburbs on the North Shore and increasing traffic levels it was necessary to increase the capacity of the bridge. In 1969 two-lane box girder clip-on sections were added to each side, doubling the number of lanes from four to eight. The sections were manufactured by Japanese contractors (Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries), which led to the nickname 'Nippon clip-ons'. The selection of the company was considered a bold move at the time, barely 20 years after WWII and with some considerable anti-Japanese sentinemt still existing in the country. In 2006, it became public that cracks and signs of material fatigue had been found in the clip-on lanes, which have an expected lifetime of 50 years. Auckland City Council Transport Committee requested Transit New Zealand to investigate the future of the clip-on lanes as part of its 10-year plan. Transit noted in this context that the plan already includes some funding for bridge maintenance. In May 2007, Transit New Zealand proposed a bylaw change to restrict trucks over 4.5 tonnes from using the outside lane on each clip-on. This is to reduce stress on the aging structure. This was later changed to a less strict bylaw introduced in July 2007 restricting only vehicles of 13 tonnes or more, based on the high level of voluntary compliance during the previous months. In 2007, it was announced that NZ$ 45 million in maintenance work on the clip-on sections was being pulled ahead as part of good practice. However, in October 2007, a 2006 report from Beca Group surfaced in the press, noting that the clip-ons were at risk of catastrophic, immediate failure in certain circumstances (such as a traffic jam trapping a large number of trucks on them). Transit New Zealand has noted that the situation described was extremely unlikely, and measures already implemented would prevent it from occurring. On the 25 of January I began a 365. It is now the 28th of April and I feel the need to inform you that I don't plan to finish my 365. Although I am disappointed and have held off publishing this photo for some time with this description (it's remained in my flickr on private for two weeks now) because I needed to know I was making the right decision, and also find the time to actually sit down and properly write this. I'm choosing to stop because even though each day was a challenge which is the purpose of a 365, I found myself day after day coming home from university late and literally having half an hour to get a shot. Getting under 7 hours sleep, getting up and doing the same thing day after day and then struggling to get an inventive shot at half 11 at night is just not realistic and I felt like I was failing (which I guess in some way I have been) when I don't want to feel like that with my photos. So, with that being said, I bid adieu to my 365. Maybe I'll attempt it again one day, but maybe I won't. However, if I were to completely stop with this project I would not forgive myself. Because of that I am now embarking on a 52 weeks project. Something much more realistic and positive in my mind at the moment. So because I completed 66 days of my 365, that equates to ten weeks. So this photo is for week 11. (It's from when my sister and I went for a walk up Mt Eden in the evening) Note that in the time between my last upload and now, I have continued to take photos each day. I'm choosing not to upload most of them because I really don't feel like I should upload photos that I'm not proud of. So there you have it! Sorry for the rant haha. Now to catch up on uploading :) Devon Hanna Photography on Facebook.

Mt Eden Pano MK3
Made by -stereographic-
Bought myself an early xmas present, a nodal ninja 5 and its choice! I spent three days calibrating my two lenses for all the focal lengths I'll be using and took it out for its first test shoot today. I previously used a manfotto sliding plate to act as a panoramic head which was ok, the major limitation though was that the camera had to be in landscape orientation for the pano or else parallax errors would occur during stitching. I also found shooting in landscape mode difficult compositionally, all my panos ended up being very wide but quite short, this often meant that foreground could not fit in the scene unless a very wide lens was used. I looked into getting a elbow bracket so I could shoot in portrait mode but finally bit the bullet and got this. It feels very accurate and precise, the rotating base clicks every so many degrees so you can work out how far you need to pan the camera based on how many clicks instead of lining up objects visually in the view finder, should be a great time saver. Very pleased so far. Mt Eden, Auckland, New zealand
Made by Pedro Kaldero
A friend from Brazil and I came up with this idea to do a bit of tour guide tagging with our respective countries (2 images a week) since both of us haven't been to each others city, this is my tour- part 1 of 10. Info: The central focus of the suburb is the dormant eponymous volcano whose summit (196 metres above sea level) is the highest natural point on the Auckland isthmus. The majestic bowl-like crater is 50 metres deep. The volcano erupted several times resulting in a series of craters, with the last eruption about 15,000 years ago Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Eden

Start of the day in AKL
Made by Mark Emirali
I wanted to capture some mixed lighting before the sun came up and just got to Mt Eden before it made an appearence. Fortunately the guard that opens the gate for car access was early and that avoided me having to walk all the way to the top, phew!!! Theres heaps of spots on it (as many photos from other people have shown) to get shots of Auckland and I only wish I had done some more checking before I tried doing some pictures, but hey, running around like a headless chicken in the dark is fun???

Auckland from Mount Eden

Sunrise at Mount Eden volcanic crater right in the heart of Auckland city. This is a remake of a previous photo - almost identical except the cow is looking towards the camera in this one. This was only one of 3 mornings I witnessed mist in Auckland in the 16 months I was there. Thankfully it happened to fall on a weekend The full Auckland set on my website is here www.kennymuir.com/portfolio31272.html

Midsummer's eve

21.12.2009: Maungawhau / Mount Eden, Auckland, NZ. I realised as I was having dinner tonight that it was the longest day in the southern hemisphere. Because of my move back to NZ this year, I have managed to see three longest days in a row. Because I forgot to wake and photograph sunrise this morning, I thought I would rush up nearby Mount Eden and photograph sunset instead. To all my friends in the northern hemisphere: it is now your turn to hog the blanket!

AKL Bokeh

Ok, after going crazy inside for the wet weekend (no doubt why I took a picture like this) I wanted to get out and stretch the legs, sunset wasn't really happening in a big way so decided to capture Auckland in a different colourful way, no main lights on Sky tower at this time, maybe due to power savings. Mind you this kind of reminds me how the city used to look in my much younger days after a night out on the lager!! Best viewed large 25 secs

What do you call a group of photographers?
Made by Brett Dickson
A large group of photographers turned up at the summit of Mt Eden tonight, all taking photos of the sunset from the same location (they may have been looking for the moon that you can see to the left of the trig). I counted 20 cameras in this image alone (there were another 5~10 taking images from various other locations around the car park). This image was converted from RAW in RawTherapee.

more images from a trip back to the home country in 2002. I was really dissapointed with the processing done on these (we were film based then) and so apologise for any dullness in these. Auckland City as seen from atop the Mt Eden volcano. 2 of the city's biggest landmarks - the Harbour Bridge and the Sky Tower are visible.

RWC opening fireworks
Made by Nick in exsilio
9.9.2011: taken from Mount Eden. It was my first time trying to potograph fireworks, and I wish I'd used a longer lens and focussed a bit better. It was a magnificent display. I also wish I'd been able to get to Devonport to take it from across the Waitemata Harbour, but the ferries stopped running because of the crowds.

Summit of Mt Eden.

It's amazing how a little bit of cloud can make an everyday scene so special. I accidentally changed the camera settings to Auto without realising it, so the photo was unfortunately shot in ISO-400, which caused increased noise and loss of details. In-camera settings: Auto Post-processing: None.

I kept this photo for quiet some time now in my library. Didn't know what to think about. Today when I opened up the library again and the photo popped up, I thought it's actually quiet a nice photo and that I will give it a try on my flickr photostream. Tell me what you think...
