3D Display

A group of visitors trying out 3D TV and 3D glasses on display at the Sony Building in Ginza, Tokyo. I'm a big Sony fan, so the 7 or so floors of advertising that make up the Sony Building were a big chance for them to make some sort of sale... but they spent about 4 of those floors trying to get me to care about 3D TV, and it didn't work at all. I really think this is a dead format before it gets off the ground. I can't see myself ever buying a 3D TV anyway. A: It just doesn't look that good... just a series of textured planes that move past each other. Nothing new is learned. B: The narritive structure of TV programming just doesn't 'need' 3D... the language of TV visuals has been developed over the better part of a century, and in the face of that, shots or plot devices that look to use 3D in storytelling just end up looking gimmicky. So yeah, no sale.

Various Failures VIII - material that didn't make it into the exhibition. Back to this. This building (Hermes, Ginza) tormented me more than just about any other. There are some amazing shots to be had from inside, and maybe even a few of the built in sculpture, but the building itself... impossible.
