Judith Bluck 'Crucible', 1979 Moorfoot plastic Location: Outside the Manpower Services Commission Building, Moorfoot. Description: Large bronze-coloured plastic fountain sculpture. Very much in keeping with the surrounding architectural environment. The artist has referred to it as an exploding crucible. Commission: One of several projects by the same artist for the Property Services Agency of the Department of the Environment. A mural by the same artist, commissioned by Sheffield City Council, is located in the same street. Comment: This piece is normally assumed to be bronze, although this is not the case. In winter water sometimes freezes on it in a spectacular icefall. (The water has not run in the 20 years thAat I've been in Sheffield)

The Moorfoot building opened in July 1981 as the Head Office for the Manpower Services Commission. It is currently occupied by the Department for Education and Skills and the Department for Work and Pensions. According to recent articles in the local press, 900 civil servants who work at Moorfoot are to be re-located to a brand new state of the art building by 2010. Not so long ago, Moorfoot itself was regarded as a brand new state of the art building!

Multi-faceted ex-Manpower Services Commission building in Sheffield. This building has been renamed many times as the government has changed the name of the department. Manpower Services Commission, Training Agency, DoE, Works and Pensions or some such, and probably others!

Day 147/365: The Crucible sculpture in Moorfoot by Judith Bluck (1979). This was originally created as a fountain, but is now left as a dry sculpture... thankfully making it no less striking.

Brilliant sculpture at Moorfoot in front of the government building. I have never seen it with the water running and what happens to it when this part is redeveloped?
