This is Moomintroll and Snufkin enjoying sitting together on the bridge near the Moomin House, fishing. Moomintroll is a serious and conscientious young Moomin, but also with a sense of adventure. Snufkin is a wanderer who hates being tied down by places or possessions. The Moomin books were written by Tove Jansson, and I read them as a child in central England. Jansson powerfully evokes mysteries like Winter and the Sea, and the sense of a large, perplexing world. This works for children as well as adults, though once I had visited Finland, especially the south coast, the images in the books really came alive. This photo was taken at Moomin World in Naantali - the child in the orange t-shirt (mine!) has just discovered that Moomintroll has a zip in his back ... :-)
