551960_Montrose Beach Jetty, Chicago, IL
Made by remove
Title of original NARA item 551960: LAKE MICHIGAN'S WATER IS AT A RECORD HIGH THIS YEAR. LIFEGUARD TOWS LIFE GUARD BOATS PAST JETTY, 06/1973. Original NARA photo taken by Paul Sequeira (DOCUMERICA series). This photo was taken by Arlen Parsa on December 31st, 2010 at the same location (the Montrose Beach jetty in Chicago.). As you can see, the bikini-clad beach-goers and record-high tide from 1973 has been replaced by ice flows and umbrellas some 37 years later. Note to NARA judges: For some reason, Flickr is not showing the original size of the photo for download. If you want the original resolution photo (3264 × 2448 not the 1024 x 768 that Flickr shows), just send me an email: arlen (dot) parsa (at) gmail (dot) com.

Light Tower Montrose Horseshoe Pier ~ Icy
Made by cMeFiSh (What's Next)
Best Large On Black January 4th image looking northeast from the famous Montrose Horseshoe Pier on the north side of Chicago. The temperature was 15° Fahrenheit. The winds were around 25 mph out of the north. Which probably put the real feel temp around zero. This cold day did not seem to bother me however. I kept shooting until my battery died on the 7D. Had a great time. Hope you enjoy this HDR based work in Photoshop.

Happy Fence Friday {Dreamer of Dreams} Edition!
Made by pixelmama
This was taken the same day of the October Gale (the epic wave images I posted). I hiked around to the sheltered side of the shoreline. The view across the fence to the sailboat & the frothy lake was fabulous as were the golden tipped clumps of dune grass. Happy Fence Friday!! ~ ♫ Jimmy Buffett – Son of a Son of a Sailor ♫

BUDGERIGAR
Made by mark.bowman1858
This rare blue budgerigar [except, of course, if you go to your local petco, petsmart, etc.] is obviously an escapee as they only have established wild colonies in Florida. None the less he was, and is, being seen in the Montrose area. It would be highly unlikely that he would survive the colder months or avoid the local predators. He is pretty to see flying around if you find him as he does catch your eye.

Rain, Rain, Go Away!
Made by topmedic
With thunderstorms looming, Camille, 3, had to resort to some drastic measures so as not to ruin her day :) at the Montrose Harbor Beach. Chicago Public Radio, 7-26-10 CBS 2 News 5 pm, 7-31-10 View large

Get into the swing of Monrose Harbor Beach: 2
Made by spudart
Looking out at the Chicago skyline. You can see the Hancock and Trump Tower. I also like how he has a nice sparkle reflection on his left leg. How did wireguy fall off the swing? Find out at www.spudart.org/blogs/randomthoughts_comments/5441_0_3_0_C/

Need A Light?
Made by Happy_Peasant
This must have been a good lighter because three other gulls chased this guy about a half a mile trying to get it from him. He landed near me, set it down, then picked it up again and started screeching in triumph. Which seemed hard to do with a lighter in his mouth but he had fun I guess as he kept doing it. Large here

Division

Fencing at Montrose Point on Lake Michigan to keep intruders from going into the bird sanctuary at the Point. Appeared on Gapers Block's Rearview, November 13, 2007. Thank you all!

Spring Is In The Air
Made by Flipped Out
A male cardinal looking for a mate at Chicago's Magic Hedge. The Magic Hedge is a plot of land on Montrose Point where birds galore, sometimes hundreds of species in one day, are found. It used to be a missile base, but now it provides habitat for different, friendlier flying creatures.

Montrose Jetty II / 2:1
Made by Jeff Gaydash
A previously unpublished image. I haven't been posting many of my 2:1 crop images as they just don't seem to have much visual power on screen. Viewing larger helps or check it out at 500px.com. Thanks for visiting.

Courtship
Made by Happy_Peasant
There were several pairs, or the same pair in several places, that had one walking around the other with a fish. Sometimes taking off if a gull came close, but then returning. I was after different tern species but took a few shots of these as they were so cute.

Pectoral Sandpiper
Made by Happy_Peasant
Looks fine large here This bird seemed not at all concerned that I was right near him. He hopped up on this little mound of algae and stared at me, and let me approach so close I would have needed to remove the tele converter to continue shooting.

Black-bellied Plover At Rest
Made by Happy_Peasant
I would have thought this a Golden Plover but was told it was a Black-bellied Plover. Seems more gold then the others there though. (Added later: The real Golden Plover has a darker head and is cuter.) Large view here

Sweet Home Chicago
Made by Flipped Out
This is one of the reason why Chicago's skyline is considered to be, by some accounts, No. 2 (after Hong Kong's) best in the world.

Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Made by Flipped Out
I photographed this cutie at the Magic Hedge, a small plot of dunes on Montrose Point planted with grass, bush and trees that is a favorite resting place of migratory birds on Chicago's lakefront.
