Spain - Barcelona - Calatrava Tower detail
Made by Darrell Godliman
A detail of the Communications Tower by Santiago Calatrava at the 1992 Olympic Park on Montjuic, Barcelona. I composed the shot to take advantage of it's dynamic shape and used a polariser to darken the sky. Exposure proved tricky given the extrmes of contrast so I shot in RAW to give me some flexibility at post-production. From WIkipedia : The Montjuic Communications Tower (Torre Telefónica) is a telecommunication tower in the Montjuïc neighborhood of Barcelona, Spain. Designed by Santiago Calatrava, construction on the tower began in 1989 and was completed in 1992. The white tower was built for Telefónica to transmit television coverage of the 1992 Summer Olympics Games in Barcelona. The 136 m (446 ft) tower is located in the Olympic park, and represents an athlete holding the Olympic Flame. The basement is covered with 'trencadís', Gaudí's mosaic technique created from broken tile shards. Because of the tower's orientation, it works also as a giant sundial, which uses the Europa square to indicate the hour.

The Calatrava Tower sits in the middle of 1992 Barcelona Olympic site on Montjuic. As an isolated sculptural object it was great to photograph against the polarised deep blue sky. I must've taken 50 shots of this from various angles, lenses etc but this'll have to do you for now until I get some more time to process them. Montjuïc Telecommunications Tower - Barcelona

Santiago Calatrava 1991 Calatrava's beautiful and original communications tower was built for Telefónica in the heart of the 1992 Olympic site, to carry coverage of the Games. Aside from its distinctive structural form, the tower is innovative in enclosing the circular platform of microwave dishes, replacing the normal clutter with a serene white arc. As a result the 130 meter structure becomes a welcome feature in the Olympic park. Imagery abounds. The overall form of the tower is based on a Calatrava sketch of a kneeling figure making an offering. The base on which the figure 'kneels' is covered in broken glazed tiles in recognition of Gaudi (though with more restrained colors). The orientation of the tower means that the shadow of the central needle on the circular platform acts as a (rather impractical) sundial. from: www.galinsky.com/buildings/MontjuicTower/index.htm

Spain - Barcelona - Calatrava Tower - Trencadis detail

The base of the Calatrava Tower is covered in Trencadís in what would appear to be a direct reference to Gaudi ? From Wikipedia : Trencadís (Catalan language) is a type of mosaic created from broken tile shards. The technique is also called pique assiette. This mosaic is done thanks to broken pieces of ceramic like tiles and cups, for instance. Antoni Gaudí was the first to use this technique. He covered his three-dimensional architecture with ceramics of different shapes, reliefs and colours, collected from the factory Pujol i Bausis located in Esplugues de Llobregat, which create brightly-colored patterns dancing together under the Mediterranean light. The Catalan architects Antoni Gaudí and Josep Maria Jujol used trencadís in many projects, among which Barcelona's Parc Güell is probably the most famous.

Recomiendo ver aqui!

The Torre Telefonica rises high above the 1992 Barcelona Olympic site, providing a host of photographic opportunities from different angles. Designed by Santiago Calatrava to look like an athlete holding the Olympic flame, the tower was completed in 1992. The scalloped base is shown here, backed by two of the many yellow chimneys that run across the site.
