I see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 - 5 California Condors! Mwahaha. I've been pretty obsessed with California Condors since my mum and I first spent hours watching them from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon in 2001. I've seen them once since but only from a ways away. I'd pretty much given up on my hope of seeing any on this trip when we left the NPs in Utah because we didn't have any additional stops planned where I thought we'd see them. Little did I know. Brian and I were cruising up the PCH yesterday. I looked through the back window and saw a nice view. I asked to pull over. When we got out a huge bird flew up over the ridge of the parking lot. We've seen hundreds of vultures, so assuming it was a vulture Brian commented on his ruffled looking feathers. I agreed, then spotted the tag and radio transmitter. It blew my mind. There were five of them (birds 06, 22, 51, 77, & 94) circling overhead, eyeing a dead seal below, for 15-20 minutes. Based on their size I'd guess they were juveniles (adults have a 10' wingspan, these looked closer to 6' to me). They have faces only a mother could love, and even that's a stretch really, but I could watch them soar for hours on end. It was a highlight of this trip for me. Brian got dozens of pictures. This is a picture of one of the photos on his laptop. Our hotel last night didn't have free Internet access. Boo. We'll post more of the pics soon. We're hoping to do a scenic 17-mile drive out by Pebble Beach this morning, but we've been sidetracked by a vintage car show in downtown Monterey. We're meeting up with Brian's uncle Frank for a bit later before we head to my aunt and uncle, Lynne and Ben's, place in San Francisco for a few days. WooHoo!

Believe it or not, there's ocean under that fog. We'll be cruising the 17-mile drive this morning, meeting my uncle Frank before lunch for a little birding at Moss Landing, and then heading to Lynne and Ben's home in San Francisco for a couple of days of much-needed R&R.
