My first morning in the desert barely qualified since a very late start got me to the first feature in Canyonlands at quarter to noon. Almost as perfectly out of the Golden Hour as you can get. Still, lemons and lemonade... It was a very hot day (33C) and I did a walk a little later that I thought would be my last due to poor preparation. But that's another photo!

La Sal Mountains, seen across the high desert from Dead Horse Point State Park. The story goes that the Spanish explorer who named the mountains did not believe that snow and ice could exist in this arid climate late in the summer, so the mountains (he thought) must be covered in salt (la sal in Spanish).

Deformed Navajo Sandstone

Deformation in eolian sandstones (wind blown) like this is an indication of a high water table and rapid burial under the overlying dune. This overpressures the water in the lower sandtone and it escapes via the path of least resistance (usually upwards) deforming the structure as it goes.

Just one of many perfectly formed red bluffs and mesas in this area. The geological layers are readily apparent.
