moma is showing the CCTV headquarters designed by ole scheeren and rem koolhaas (OMA - the same firm which designed the prada store in SoHo). i find it ironic that such a transparent and structurally groundbreaking building will become the home of one of the most bureaucratic and über-sensored organisations in the world. an optimist will say, perhaps changes are happening. the building is expected to open in 2008. it will certainly be another attraction for the olympic mass.

So what did I think of the architecture? I'm a fan of Taniguchi, I liked his Horyuji Treasures gallery inside the Tokyo National Museum. The MoMA expansion has been more or less universally praised but I just don't see it. I don't like it. The stairs/escalator area is too dark and cramped (as are most of the smaller galleries in the buildeing). The entrance area is not very effective. The construction quality is sub-par.

So I finally got myself mid-town to check out the new MoMA. Being the cheap bastard that I am, I went during the Friday evening free hours. (I am NOT, under any circumstances, paying that outrageous $20 entrance fee.) Holy crap it was packed. So packed there was no way anyone can appreciate the art. Oh well, I guess I'll have to leech someone's membership card and check it out during a weekday morning or something.
