Tokyo From Roppongi at Night

Tokyo From Roppongi at Night
Made by The Devil in the Detail
View from the top of the Mori Building (Roppongi Hills) towards Shinjuku which is the glow in the upper right. So, went off for drinks last night and thought I'd drop by Roppongi Hills for a few photos. Got some great architectural shots and a few reasonable night city shots. Most were standard 3xp, high iso without a tripod. Got lots of reflections and forehead grease window smears as well as the +2 exposures being rather blurred. I processed them and then did the same for the single raws of the normal exposure shots with some noise reduction and sharpening and as it turns out these were much better, as above. They lacked some of the 'glow' of the 3xp shots but more than made up for this in detail. The full 21 MP has so much detail, I think I'm gonna try to make an A3 print of it. Anyway, here's the little version for flickr. Once again, thanks everyone for your comments on my pictues. It's great to have so many people interested in my shots. I'm always surprised that the ones I think are mediocre get lots of attention and the ones I really like sometimes don't but I put that more down to personal taste. Most (if not all) of the development of my style comes from seeing the great work that all my contacts make, whether I comment on them or not. I see great stuff by you, wonder how you did it and this leads me in new directions. I'm happy to say that some of the shots that blew me away when I first joined flickr don't blow me away as much as they used to and some of them I feel I am even capable of now, but then the things those poeple are doing now is even better. Have a great weekend everyone. Back to work tomorrow.

From Toy-ronto to Toy-kyo with love :-)
Made by Katrin Ray
Flying on paper wings of digital tilt-shift magic from Toy-ronto to Toy-kyo with love :-) May I present you with the new collaborative project “Toy-kyo”, we started with my Flickr friend It all began when I posted my first Toy-ronto images on Flickr and Hisako became a fan of the series :-) Then after she moved to her hometown Tokyo, last year, we started to joke about Toy-kyo with her in some comments… And then it struck us why not to do a tilt-shift series on Tokyo as a collaborative effort! :-) So welcome to “Toy-kyo”! Here is our first image of many more! That was the surprise of this Miniature Sunday - thank you for joining the fun! Stay tuned for the next episode of tilt-shift digi-magic in Toy-ronto and Toy-kyo! :-) * * * Photo of Tokyo (from Tokyo Tower) by Hisako R Photo of my hand, paper origami crane by me :-) Katrin Ray Tilt-shift processing & photomontage by Katrin Ray * * * ps: the exif data of the image belongs to the shot of my hand. For those, who wonder... step-by-step instructions on how to fold the paper crane can be found in on-line Origami Studio at our Oriland www.oriland.com/studio/gallery.asp?ID=Animals Happy folding :-)

Collaborative project Toy-kyo... Happy Miniature Sunday! That is the final enter for this mini-series on Toy-kyo. Our origami Robots are hurrying to give a helping robo-hand to miniature Tokyo. Stay tuned for more toy-some tilt-shift fun in twin-mini-town of Toy-ronto! It's a fun model to fold, all you have to do is to comprehend folding of a cube-module, then fold several of them and combine them together into a robot - easy :-) Well, maybe not very easy, but very satisfying for sure! You may try your hands in ori-robotics - its diagrams are available for free in our Oriland On-line Studio. Happy robo-folding! :-)

Himamatsuri - Doll Festival. Toy-kyo Style

Himamatsuri - Doll Festival. Toy-kyo Style

Continuing the collaborative project Toy-kyo... Happy Miniature Sunday and happy Hinamatsuri! We had Hinamatsuri on March 3rd in our Toy-kyo - it is a Girl's Day or Doll Festival. It is customary to do a display of hina dolls (hina means girl or princess) on that day. So, here it is an origami set-up for that occasion :-) Our Orilanders, little origami people made completely out of paper, acting Emperor and Empress, even if they are still Prince and Princess :-) Thought these cheerful Toy-kyo buildings will be a good platform (hina dan) for this display. Stay tuned for more tilt-shift digi-magic in twin-mini-town of Toy-ronto :-) * * * Photo of Tokyo (view from the Sky Deck at the top of Roppongi Hills) by Hisako R Photo of my hand & origami prince & princess, created & folded by me - me, Katrin Ray :-) Tilt-shift processing & photomontage by Katrin Ray * * * By the way, for those interested in origami, the folding instructions for such origami dolls can be found in our book Origami Little People :-) Happy folding!

Continuing the collaborative project Toy-kyo... Happy Miniature Sunday! Toy-kyo is ready for spring festivals and it's time to adorn the miniature Buddhist temple with some traditional origami! Setting-up the paper crane on the roof of one of traditional buildings. By the way, did you know that secret of paper-making was brought to Japan long time ago (about 1400 years ago) by Buddhist monks, who probably were the first ones to fold paper into different figures too! While doing a miniature tilt-shift-replica of Tokyo, how can we forget about Tokyo Tower - a lovely Eiffel Tower-inspired lattice structure in bright orange! Soooo setting Toy-kyo Tower up to complete this Toy-kyo vista, how little Toy-kyonians observe it from Roppongi Hills :-) By the way, behind and a bit right from the Tower you may see the Zojo-ji Temple (featured last week), they still have my red paper crane on display! :-) Stay tuned for more tilt-shift digi-magic in twin-mini-town of Toy-ronto :-) Happy Miniature Sunday! * * * Photo of Tokyo (from Roppongi Hills) by Hisako R Photo of my hand - me, Katrin Ray :-) Tilt-shift processing & photomontage by Katrin Ray * * * See wiki-article about Tokyo Tower

The Lights of Japan

The Lights of Japan
Made by Stuck in Customs
One evening I was walking around Roppongi, taking in all the sights. There doesn't seem to be a bad direction to go. Everything was alive and full of life. Getting into this particular position took a few Cirque de Soliel moves that no one was around to appreciate (or warn me against). There is a pedestrian set of stairs that blindly switchbacks its way up an outside drum-tower of sorts. I had a feeling that on top of this little tower would be a good vantage in this particular direction, which I had not seen, but I had mapped out in my brain. I did one of those moves like children do when they work their way up a doorframe -- but I did it in a narrow stairwell. It got me to the top, which was extra-difficult with the tripod! I ended up with a clean view of everything. But then, only then, did I start to wonder how the heck I was going to get back down. I waited for a nice-looking stair-walker to pass by underneath, and then I handed down my camera before performing an unceremonious jump/fall. from the blog www.stuckincustoms.com

Miss Universe

Miss Universe
Made by daruma*
Tokyo Mid Town was, when I lived in Tokyo, the site of the Japanese Defense Agency not far from Roppongi. Then the developers moved in and created an urban district covering a 10 hectare site. Six buildings form the centre piece and there are also a number of street-based sculptures, including this six metre tall creation by Shirazeh Houshiary and Pip Horne called Bloom. As an aside, I was out this evening with a couple of Tokyo-based friends. We visited a bar in Aoyama to discover that the centre area was cordoned off to protect the 11 finalists for this years competition to decide the Japanese contestant for the Miss Universe competition... The lady that served me my drinks handed me her business card, which told me her name and the name of the University where she's studying along with Department of Engineering and Assistant to Miss Universe..... It was a pleasant evening. Part of the set.

Continuing the collaborative project Toy-kyo... Our thoughts with Japan these days... It was powerful earthquake and tsunami. I'm hurry to say that I heard from my Toy-kyo companion, Hisako - she and her family are okay. Our warm wishes to all the people in Japan... Our miniature Toy-kyo is well and I'm just re-checking safety everywhere, including this rooftop roller coaster. 2019

2019
Made by /\ltus
This is the year in Los Angeles that Blade Runner occurs, but if you come to Tokyo today, you'll get a pretty good feel for the future of cityscapes 10 years hence elsewhere... Had the good fortune to hookup yet again (third time now) with good Flickr bud . His business brings him out this way every month or so, so we've been hooking up regularly. Rather than drag him yet *again* to my Tequila jaunt (Agave!), decided to try something a little different. This time took him to the top of the Atago Hills office building for a 5-star Kaiseki dinner (very traditional style Japanese cuisine), along with 5-star views ;-) Non-HDR shot taken with my trusty point-n-shoot Lumix from our *table* in the corner of the restaurant. Tokyo, Japan.

Tokyo X

Tokyo X
Made by Thomas Birke
Just found this while flipping through the digital images I took in Tokyo. I usually go scouting and check exposure with my little Lumix. I check them on the screen and keep a location directory on the camera while travelling. This is the first time I looked at these images on my computer. I almost forgot this one. The thought of this scene makes me angry. It was raining and windy, but nevertheless I tried a Large format shot. But 4 minutes in the wind - no chance! The 8x10 Slide is totally blurred. So this is one of the rare occasions, where my little digital camera won the competition, as bad as the quality is...it's still better than the large format oh and by the way, check out chris' view on the scene, I believe he was there first ;)

Tokyo Tower

Tokyo Tower
Made by Laurent T (aka thery_lg)
Location: 35.650266,139.744862 Another shot I have been hunting for some time, also inspired by the 'Run' advertising campain (their vantage point was farther than mine, and the focal much longer, with a different effect on the perspective). Some comments on my choices for this shot: - I went for a short exposure time (1sec I think) because as often when I don't shoot wide angle (55mm here), I was not happy with the light trails. So, I waited for the red light (which actually just turned green here). - The composition has been defined by public lighting which frames the shot on the two top corners: I didn't want to include them, hence the composition. I cut the top of the tower on purpose to limit empty space in the sky.

Fuji-san Sunset

Fuji-san Sunset
Made by Scott Barlow
Looking west from the top of the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower in downtown Tokyo and past the concrete jungle which seems to extend as far as the eye can see, lies the 12,388 ft (3,776 m) Mt. Fuji. It's been about 8-9 months since I saw it last - as the weather and my timing just hadn't been right. As an active volcano, Mount Fuji is one of Japan's Three Holy Mountains (三霊山 Sanreizan) along with Mount Tate (Toyama Prefecture) and Mount Haku (Gifu Prefecture) (Wikipedia). EXIF: Exposure Program: Aperture Priority Aperture: f/7.1 Focal Length: 50 mm ISO Speed: 100 (L1.0) Exposure Bias: 0 EV 7 RAW bracketed exposures (-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3) to feel like you're also there.

THE MORI SPIDER

THE MORI SPIDER
Made by James Chan "JC Inspiration"
This Mori Spider is at Roppongi Hills. Roppongi Hills is an area with upscale shops and restaurants. As for the Mori Tower (the building in this picture), it is mostly used for office space. You can get a pretty view of Tokyo if you go up to the 52nd and 54th floor, where it is used as an observation deck! I did my homework before visiting Roppongi, mainly on certain angles that I think would come out pretty awesome. But while I was there, there was a dinosaur event going on, so that totally changed my plan. I was sort of bitter, but its okay! I like spiders better anyway! James Chan www.jcinspiration.com

Zen

Zen
Made by The Devil in the Detail
And by Zen I don't mean the philosophy. For anyone who remembers the early 80s British sci-fi TV show Blake's 7, Zen was the computer that ran the Liberator, the main characters starship. If you remember what that computer looked like then you will get the reference. If you didn't grow up with 80's British TV as we late 30s Australians did, then you'll just have to imagine, or google it if you really care. Yet another shot of Roppongi Hills. If you want to see a really cool shot of this place go check out tk21hx's photostream. There are some seriously cool shots of many of the same places I've been shooting, from a different perspective.

Kodomo no hi Tokyo Tower

Kodomo no hi Tokyo Tower
Made by Laurent T (aka thery_lg)
Location: 35.658953,139.745541 A difficult shot to take with my widest angle of 24mm. I had to crouch on the ground, hold my tripod which was unbalanced to look upward... not very comfortable but I am quite happy with the result which was worth the effort. May 5th marks the day of the children, a day more precisely devoted to boys if I have a correct understanding. Fish (carp) shaped kites called koinobori are displayed in many different places to celebrate that day and there was a nice display at the bottom of the Tokyo Tower... which helps to fill the empty sky and also creates a kind of symetry in this composition.

Cruisin'

Cruisin'
Made by Dan Chui (busy)
5XP HDR shot from the streets of Roppongi in Tokyo, Japan. Found an interesting angle to take an image of the sunset from street-level that wasn't directly in-your-face, so to speak. Lamp posts and overhead wires don't really factor into my decision-process since it is what it is. Funnily enough, a Corvette came cruising through as I was setting up and only noticed that I captured it after the fact, lol Nothing quite like cruising around the streets on a beautiful afternoon! Processed using Photomatix. Applied Nik and Topaz software, sharpened the image, and used Noise Ninja in Photoshop. Feel free to leave a comment!
