La Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II di Milano fu costruita dal 1865 al 1878 su progetto di Giuseppe Mengoni. E' un notevole esempio dell'architettura eclettica della seconda metà dell'Ottocento milanese, sia per le scelte tecnico-costruttive, sia per le sue notevoli dimensioni. Nella prima metà del XIX secolo, la città di Milano, che assumeva lo status di principale città industriale della penisola, traeva ispirazione alla urbanizzazione dalle grandi capitali europee, come Londra e Parigi, sede di quelle innovazioni tecnologiche che costituivano il simbolo della seconda rivoluzione industriale e, di conseguenza, del grande cambiamento sociale che si era messo in moto. Fu nel 1859 che, nella città, sorse l'idea di un passaggio coperto che collegasse Piazza Duomo a Piazza della Scala: simile alla Galleria de Cristoforis, sempre a Milano a San Babila, ma più grande e più borghese, da dedicare magari al re che portò Milano ad unificarsi al Regno d'Italia. Il progetto di Giuseppe Mengoni si aggiudicò la vittoria del concorso internazionale indetto dal comune di Milano, cui parteciaparono 176 architetti. La Galleria è strutturata con un impianto a forma di croce e l'ottagono che si forma all'incrocio dei bracci è coperto da un’ardita cupola in vetro e ferro che, per la sua tecnica moderna e per la sua originalità, è da mettere in relazione con le altre strutture simili create nello stesso periodo a Londra e Parigi. Alzando lo sguardo da sotto la Cupola, l’attenzione è focalizzata da quattro mosaici a forma di mezzaluna che raffigurano, in allegoria, quattro parti del mondo, Europa, Africa, Asia e America. Oltre ai disegni della pavimentazione dell'ottagono centrale, la galleria mette in mostra anche 24 statue che raffigurano italiani illustri. Sei, più grandi delle altre, rappresentano Volta, Michelangelo, Galileo, Cavour, Leonardo, Pier Capponi e sono state eseguite dallo scultore Magni. I due ingressi principali, quelli del braccio più lungo, previdero inoltre due grandi archi trionfali. Con il bombardamento aereo sulla città di Milano nell'agosto del 1943, la Galleria ha subito notevoli danneggiamenti ed in tale occasione l'arco verso Silvio Pellico è stato distrutto per la maggior parte. Nel 1953 è stata iniziata un'attenta ricostruzione che ha cercato di riproporre il più fedelmente possibile l'architettura del Mengoni nelle forme e nelle proporzioni, modificando però in parte i materiali costituenti. Il restauro degli anni Sessanta ha interessato anche il rifacimento della pavimentazione. Sul pavimento dell'ottagono centrale è realizzato a mosaico il simbolo dei Savoia. Sui lati sono presenti 4 stemmi di città: Torino, Roma, Firenze e Milano. L'intervento di conservazione e restauro ha interessato anche i due archi di ingresso alla Galleria verso le vie Silvio Pellico ed Ugo Foscolo, compreso il sottarco e l'arco interno, e le facciate dei corpi di fabbrica di pertinenza per una superficie totale piana di circa 2.700 mq. L'eterogeneità architettonico-decorativa dei due archi, che si manifesta sia nella diversità dei materiali presenti che nel loro differente stato di conservazione, ha reso l'intervento del restauro estremamente complesso. Obiettivo del restauro, oltre a quello immediato di recuperare e consolidare le parti maggiormente deteriorate, è anche quello di uniformare l'aspetto dei due archi dopo le diverse manomissioni avvenute nel tempo e dopo la ricostruzione del dopo guerra

www.miart.it MiArt - Fiera Internazionale di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea - arriva alla sua quattordicesima edizione con l'ambizione di porsi come un appuntamento cruciale dell'arte italiana e internazionale. Per questo la fiera milanese, che da anni presenta le migliori gallerie del Novecento italiano, ha incaricato per l'edizione 2009 un curatore di prestigio, Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, di ridefinirne il concept e di ripensarne la collocazione, in particolare per il settore contemporaneo, nel contesto italiano ed internazionale. Tutto questo attraverso una serie di novità che vi invitiamo a scoprire, dettagliatamente, nelle altre sezioni di questo sito. Qualche anticipazione, intanto: le novità riguardano la costituzione di un nuovo Comitato consultivo, la periodizzazione cronologica che separa le sezioni moderno e contemporaneo, i formati introdotti all'interno della fiera, la selezione delle gallerie partecipanti, le date di apertura, i supporti editoriali e un nuovo ed articolato programma per i collezionisti, a cura di Laura Garbarino. Inoltre, MiArt vuole porsi come soggetto attivo di dialogo con il contesto cittadino, con il sistema culturale, istituzionale ed imprenditoriale di Milano, città dalle enormi potenzialità spesso inespresse. La fiera d'arte milanese vuole essere uno strumento per rilanciare queste potenzialità e il ruolo del capoluogo lombardo nel panorama artistico nazionale e internazionale. Ambisce ad essere il promotore diretto o indiretto di iniziative al di fuori della fiera che siano strumento di visibilità per questa e per la città stessa. In questa direzione MiArt si pone come iniziatrice di attività espositive in diversi luoghi della città, tra cui una prima mostra incentrata su una serie di performance che si terrà, durante la Giornata del Contemporaneo, il 4 ottobre, in una prestigiosa sede cittadina, e una serie di conferenze con esponenti della cultura artistica internazionale chiamati a dialogare con l'eredità milanese in luoghi di grande valenza architettonica e storica. MiArt sarà, inoltre, l'editrice di una pubblicazione, molto più di un house-organ, uno strumento per riscoprire Milano e la sua cultura artistica. Queste e altre iniziative, in dialogo con le istituzioni pubbliche e private della città (come già evidenziato dalla iniziativa Miraggi), stimoleranno, ne siamo certi, una rinnovata centralità di Milano, delle sue energie culturali ed economiche. Solo attraverso un dialogo collettivo Milano potrà riconquistare il ruolo che merita. MiArt desidera fare la sua parte in questa nuova geografia. MiArt vuole diventare una vetrina di eccellenza per l'arte e il mercato dell'arte internazionale, in un confronto serrato con le sfide che il sistema artistico e culturale contemporaneo richiede. Join my page on Facebook milan central station, italy hdr 2008 Il Re Vittorio Emanuele III pose la prima pietra della nuova stazione il 28 aprile 1906, prima ancora che venisse scelto un progetto. La costruzione iniziò nel 1926. A causa della crisi economica in Italia, durante la prima guerra mondiale, la progettazione procedette a rilento, e il progetto, piuttosto semplice all'inizio, continuò a cambiare divenendo sempre più complesso e maestoso. Questo avvenne specialmente quando Benito Mussolini, divenuto presidente del Consiglio, volle che la stazione rappresentasse la potenza del regime fascista. Le principali modifiche furono il nuovo disegno delle piattaforme ferroviarie e l'introduzione delle grandi arcate in acciaio, opera di Alberto Fava; lunghe 341 metri, ricoprono un area di 66.500 metri quadri. La costruzione riprese a pieno ritmo nel 1925 e il 1 luglio 1931 la stazione venne inaugurata ufficialmente alla presenza del ministro delle poste e delle comunicazioni Costanzo Ciano. La stazione è attualmente interessata da importanti lavori di restauro e riqualificazione, iniziati ad agosto 2005, da parte di Grandi Stazioni, una società di Ferrovie dello Stato. I lavori dovrebbero concludersi nel 2008. La stazione è opera dell'architetto Ulisse Stacchini, il cui disegno vinse l'ultima gara per la sua costruzione nel 1912. Il progetto era stato modellato sulla Union Station di Washington. La facciata è larga 200 metri e la volta è alta 72, un record quando venne costruita. Dietro alla facciata, parallelamente ad essa corre la Galleria delle Carrozze. La stazione non ha uno stile architettonico definito, ma è una miscela di diversi stili, in particolare Liberty e Art Deco, ma non solo. Talvolta il suo stile viene definito Assiro-Milanese. È stata definita dall'arch. Frank Lloyd Wright la più bella stazione ferroviaria al mondo. I grandi ambienti pubblici della stazione (galleria di testa Biglietteria centrale e Galleria delle Carrozze richiamano le architetture monumentali romane; a dispetto dell'apparente monumentalità essi sono realizzati con economia di mezzi: le parti superiori delle pareti sono in cemento decorativo che imita il marmo di rivestimento delle parti inferiori, le grandi volte non sono strutturali ma appese e gli elementi decorativi sono in gesso (fregi della biglietteria, pannelli con simboli zodiacali) o cemento (statue, protomi leonine etc...) Al binario 21 si trova la Sala Reale, sala d'attesa della famiglia Savoia e della corte, divisa in sala reale,e sala delle armi. La stazione ha 24 binari. Genesi Durante una sessione fotografica (si fa per dire) mattutina di un sabato qualunque, intento a scimmiottare lo stile ::sarmaxiano:: in cerca di angolazioni improbabili e geometrie folli del ponte di ferro che collega Porta Genova a via Tortona, venni avvicinato mio malgrado da una simpatica coppia over 60.. La cosa si è svolta più o meno così: Moglie: (correndo trafelata verso di me) Scusi, scusi lei che è un fotografo.. (chissà perchè basta aver in mano una fotocamera per diventarlo!) il Presbite: mi dica.. cosa è successo? (reprimendo l'istinto di guardarmi dietro le spalle in cerca di un vero fotografo) Moglie: Venga a vedere, presto.. C'è un treno fermo in stazione.. deve documentralo! il Presbite: !!?? Marito: Ma no, ma no Rosina ..è solo un treno fermo, lascia perdere Moglie: Ti dico che invece è in esercizio.. c'è persino gente seduta dietro ai finestrini! Marito: Ma saranno abusivi.. dai, non disturbare il signore ..andiamo a casa! il Presbite: Non fa niente signora mi spieghi cosa la preoccupa.. Moglie: il treno ..è uno schifo! Ma come è possibile? ..come si può salire su un affare del genere? Al che, a passo spedito, raggiungiamo tutti quanti l'altro lato del ponte Moglie: Ha visto che roba? ..e hanno pure il coraggio di far pagare il biglietto! il Presbite: (semi incredulo alla vista della ciofeca) ..Ha ragione signora, il treno è in funzione! E con l'atteggiamento più professionale possibile puntai la fotocamera e feci questo scatto! Ho volutamente tentato un HDR estremo perchè la scena era tale! They say that the Cathedral of Milan is second only to St. Peter's at Rome. Vista dal Parco retrostante alla Basilica, detto Parco delle Basiliche . in quanto comprende anche la Basilica si S. Eustorgio poco distante.... La Basilica di San Lorenzo di Milano è una basilica paleocristiana edificata in età romana, tra il 372 e il 402, periodo durante il quale la capitale dell'impero è stata spostata a Milano. Per la costruzione della basilica vennero riutilizzati materiali prelevati dal vicino anfiteatro. L'edificio è stato largamente rimaneggiato e ridecorato nel '500. Con la cupola e le quattro torri per contraffortare la volta non lignea, è un esempio del modello di edificio ecclesiastico a pianta centrale bizantino, come Santa Sofia a Costantinopoli, contrapposto al modello rettangolare delle basiliche contemporanee, come la basilica antiqua che si trovava nei pressi dell'attuale Duomo di Milano. Davanti alla basilica c'è una grande corte e dal lato opposto un colonnato. Queste colonne di San Lorenzo sono di epoca antecedente ma collocate sul luogo al momento della costruzione della basilica. Sul retro della basilica oggi c'è un parco, da cui si ha un'eccellente vista del complesso. In precedenza vi era un canale o un laghetto (forse un porto) e successivamente un famoso luogo per le esecuzioni, tra cui quella raccontata nella Storia della colonna infame di Alessandro Manzoni. da Wikipedia

Si sopravvive alle storie che vanno a male, si sopravvive alla spazzatura nelle notti gelide, si sopravvive alle bombe ad orologeria, alle suonerie dei cellulari e ai treni in ritardo, si sopravvive e quel nonostante tutto diventa una coperta da rimboccare su fino a coprirsi il naso. Join my page on Facebook naviglio grande. milan, italy - hdr 2008 I Navigli di Milano sono dei canali artificiali costruiti fra il 1179 (Naviglio Grande) e il XVI secolo (Naviglio Martesana) che avevano lo scopo di permettere il raggiungimento della città sia dal Ticino sia dall'Adda. Sui Navigli transitò, oltre ad innumerevoli altre merci dirette a Milano, il marmo di Candoglia usato per la costruzione del Duomo di Milano, in tempi più recenti furono utilizzati per il trasporto delle bobine di carta dirette alle rotative del Corriere della Sera. Nella seconda metà del XIX secolo, in seguito all'introduzione dei tram, si iniziò a ipotizzare la copertura dei tratti cittadini dei navigli, copertura iniziata solo nel 1929. Attualmente il termine Navigli, a Milano, identifica i due tratti scoperti del Naviglio Grande e del Naviglio Pavese che si insinuano in città fino all'altezza di piazza XXIV Maggio e in senso più generale l'area compresa fra i due navigli caratterizzata dalla presenza di numerosi locali notturni (wikipedia italia)
