~Lydia M. Child ~ Walking around downtown St. Petersburg let us see many wonderful buildings like this one called The Rutland Building, a/k/a The Snell Building where the Snell Arcade is located inside. You really should see this in LARGE and ORIGINAL sizes to see the architecture details ~ Happy MONDAY Blues ~ Snell Arcade Wikipedia ~ Location: St. Petersburg, Florida Governing body: Private Added to NRHP: November 4, 1982 NRHP Reference#: 82001037 The Snell Arcade (also known as the Rutland Building) is a historic site in St. Petersburg, Florida. Built in 1926, it is located at 405 Central Avenue. On November 4, 1982, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The property is significant for its association with C. Perry Snell, who was instrumental in the development of St. Petersburg in the early part of the twentieth century and Richard Kiehnel, a noteworthy architect who is reputed to have inaugurated the Mediterranean Revival style in Florida. C. Perry Snell was an important early figure in the development of the community. Born in Kentucky in 1869, and working as a druggist, Snell would vacation to St. Petersburg, where he would continuously purchase property, eventually moving to the city full time in 1904. In 1905 he began his second profession – that of a real estate developer – and his list achievements in the field are indeed impressive. Generally, Snell developed most of the property east of Fourth Street and Fifth Avenue North to the northern limit of Snell Isle. In addition, he and his associates developed much of the land around Mirror Lake and Crescent Lake. Quickly establishing his properties as premier status residential areas, Snell gave them prestigious names such as Bayfront, North Shore and Granada Terrace. In 1925, amidst the boom period, he began Snell Isle – one of his most significant developments in St. Petersburg – an impressive series of homes in Spanish and Italian architectural style.

~William Dean Howells ~ This 6 foot by 12 foot Venetian mosiac tile mural is on the wall inside the Snell Arcade in downtown St. Petersburg. Please see on LARGE If you look the ORIGINAL size, you will see the details even better ~ The Snell Arcade takes its name from Perry Snell, a legendendary developer who designed much of St. Petersburg, including Snell Isle, a most desirable residential neighborhood near downtown St. Pete. It was originally designed as 10 retail stores on the ground floor, then offices above that. The third floor housed a nightclub, called Spanish Bob's, which opened onto a rooftop terrace. Today there are residential and commercial condominiums. Ground level shops include Chocolade (a store of chocolates, which Cheryl & I and our hubbies went into and was very tempting) and The Green Bench Florist. The original architect may be Richard Kiehnel, who designed El Jardin in Miami. Modernization in the 1950s hid many of the beautiful features, and it wasn't until a renovation in the 1980s, when John and Rosemary Galbraith owned the building and employed architect Charles Cannerday, that many of the old treasures were uncovered and restored. One of these was a 6 foot x 12 foot Venetian mosaic tile mural. The Snell Arcade is less than a block from the Open Air Post Office.

Washingtonia robusta! Or a Mexican fan palm growing in Florida! Picture yourself in its calmness and serenity. Waves gently lapping over your toes outstretched into the beautiful still sea, as you hear nothing but the lapping of water and against the soft sand in between your toes! In reality: I'm standing on a cement retaining wall. The beach is filled with dead fish, and the water temperature is probably no more than 58 F (13 C). There are kids screaming and tons of people playing beach volleyball to the left. There are skyscrapers of downtown St. Petersburg less than a mile away, and you can hear cars and trucks driving and honking about 200 yards away. Where is there really a paradise? I also like this photo because Washingtonia robusta are native to the arid west coast of Mexico, and here it is growing on the subtropical humid east coast of the United States almost directly in the water.

Salvador Dali Museum

Salvador Dali Museum
Made by ron_ciervo
The new Salvador Dalí Museum is the permanent home of the world's most comprehensive collection of the renowned Spanish artist's work. Compiled by the A. Reynolds Morse and Eleanor Morse over a 45-year period, it is celebrated for its 96 oil paintings. With oils spanning from 1917 through 1970, the collection provides an excellent overview of Dalí's major themes and symbols. Characterized by its diversity, it includes the Impressionist and Cubist styles of his early period, abstract work from his transition to Surrealism, the famous surrealist canvases for which he is best known, and examples of his preoccupation with religion and science during his classic period. In addition to the 96 oil paintings, the collection includes over 100 watercolors and drawings, 1,300 graphics, photographs, sculptures and objects d'art, and an extensive archival library. Comments and feedback welcome.

DIY Car Rig Photography

DIY Car Rig Photography
Made by andrew_v
So, around a year ago, I built a Car rig. Basically, it uses a combination of suction cups, super clamps and a magic arm to attach a camera securely to a car via a boom arm. So, you fly a camera off of a car looking back at it. What's the point? Because the camera moves whenever the car does, you can shoot long exposure images, let the car roll literally 2-3 feet (it doesn't even have to be on) and the resulting image looks like the car was flying! This particular photo was a test I did before I went attaching my D700 to the rig. I LOVE having a pocketable camera that I can do full manual with and the Canon S95 lets me do that. So, I shot this photo on RAW. F8 with an exposure of 5 seonds. Some light editing and this is what I got! The SLR photos look pretty sweet though too!

Salvador Dali's Melted Bench

Salvador Dali's Melted Bench
Made by e20ci
This bench, made to be reminiscent of Dali's 'The Persistance of Memory', is located outside of the Salvador Dali Art Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. I wish I'd taken the time to get a better picture of this bench. It was getting late and I didn't want to drive all the way home in the dark, so I just snapped a quick shot of this as I was leaving. And I didn't notice the tree in the background. For some reason, all of a sudden this photo has been clicked on 10-20 times a day from Yahoo Image Search, sending this shot to the top of my most viewed list very quickly.

The interior center piece of the new Dali Museum is the helical stairway. Its design is an allusion to Dalí’s fascination with spiral forms in nature and the double helix of DNA. A soaring, poured-in-place concrete spiral staircase energizes the 75-foot-high glass atrium and invites visitors to proceed from the ground-level entrance up to the third-floor galleries. The raw concrete spiral flows at its base into the visitor reception desk, with light cable-stayed stainless steel guardrails floating in delicate juxtaposition. Comments and feedback welcome.

I was completely fascinated by trees like this in Downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. The roots seem to grow from the branches and by the time they reach the ground, they appear to melt into it and eachother. I'd love to find out what kind of tree this is if anybody knows! This morning's total lunar eclipse captured over the St. Pete skyline. This eclipse was particularly spectacular because the moon is only 4 days from perigee (closest approach to earth) and coincides with the Northern Hemisphere's winter solstice. The last time these two events occurred simultaneously was 1638. Comments and feedback welcome.
