Michigan City is a city in LaPorte County, Indiana, USA, approximately 50 miles east of Chicago and 40 miles west of South Bend, Indiana. The population was 32,900 at the 2000 census. It is one of two principal cities of and is included in the Michigan City-La Porte, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Chicago-Naperville-Michigan City Combined Statistical Area.

Reached # 25 In Explore, January 19, 2008 Drove out to Michigan City to capture the sunrise - it never did - but we did have lake effect snow! At 7:00 this morning, temperatures were in the single digits and winds were gusting over 20 miles per hour at the Michigan City, Indiana lighthouse, making wind chills WAY below zero. I was the only sign of life as far as the eye could see.... even the gulls had sense enough to find shelter! After about 45 minutes in the wind and cold, my fingers couldn't even change the lenses anymore!

Temperatures reached 50 degrees last Sunday in Michigan City, Indiana - making the atmosphere pretty unstable. The Michigan City pierhead light is in the path of a heavy winter rainstorm, as the flow ice of Lake Michigan is pushed by very heavy winds into the mouth of the harbor. Later that night, the temperatures dropped to single digits!

A small stream running between two large sand dunes empties into Lake Michigan in LaPorte County, Indiana. It's interesting how the darker, tannin stained alluvium colors the water of the lake . You can tell by looking at this alluvial deposit, that the prevailing currents of the lake run from right to left.
