New York-New York uses the New York City influence of its name in several ways. Its architecture creates an impression of the New York City skyline; the hotel includes several towers configured to resemble New York City towers such as the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building. In front of the property is a pool representing New York Harbor, with a 150 ft (46 m) tall (half-scale) replica of the Statue of Liberty, a roller coaster, and replicas of the Brooklyn Bridge, Soldiers and Sailors Monument, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Ellis Island, and Grand Central Terminal, among other well-known structures. Within the resort, particular gambling areas, lounges, restaurants, and meeting rooms are named after New York City neighborhoods or landmarks. The main casino area, for example, is named after Central Park, while the shops are modeled after Greenwich Village. The resort is located on the northwest corner of the Tropicana - Las Vegas Boulevard intersection. At street level, pedestrians are blocked from crossing by concrete barriers. Instead, New York-New York is linked by overhead pedestrian bridges to its neighboring casinos to the south (the Excalibur, across Tropicana Avenue) and to the east (the MGM Grand, across the Strip).

The M&M Mixing Tunnel

Right next to the MGM Grand is Gameworks. Attached to Gameworks is the largest M&M World store in the world (or so they claim). We took Savanah in to look around and ended up staying there for quite awhile. Up on the 4th Floor they have a small walk-though exhibit which is a bit like the one at Hershey Park. It's a bit silly, but Savanah enjoyed it. It shows (a bit simplistically) how M&M's are made. This is the mixing tunnel where all the different colors are mixed together. I noticed a severe lack of brown and yellow M&M's in the tunnel, but I guess those colors didn't translate as well as the should. At the end of the M&M Factory they have some dioramas showing the lives of M&M's and then it ends at the M&M Theater where they have a cool little 3-D Movie. The movie was great and the 3-D was similar to the 3-D you see at Disney and not the cheesy blue and red type. The theater is also set up for audience interaction. The seats vibrate and air is blown to make you feel like you are a part of the action.

Las Vegas: MGM Grand

The Hollywood Golden Age-themed MGM Grand Las Vegas, which opened on December 18, 1993, is the worlds largest hotel with 5,044 guest rooms. Before the Current MGM Grand was built, another hotel known as the MGM Grand was located about a mile north on the Strip, where Bally's Hotel & Casino currently sits. Originally, the main entrance on the Strip was inside the mouth of a giant cartoonish lion, but this entrance feature was changed to a more traditional entrance; some Asian gamblers avoided the casino, due to the cultural view that entering the mouth of the lion was bad luck. A large golden lion statue was added above the entrance to keep with the MGM Lion theme, while not offending their more superstitious guests. When first opened, it had an extensive Wizard of Oz theme, including the green Emerald City color of the building. In 2000, in an attempt to appeal to a more mature clientele the hotel moved to a them of the Art Deco era of classic Hollywood.

I'd intended to stick to uploading my shots from Las Vegas in chronological order, but I couldn't resist sharing this one as soon as possible. As I crouched down, resting my legs while a video played to the delegates in the conference hall, I thought the five minute clip, played on a basis of a remark by one speaker about going to the moon if that's what the clients want, was tenuous. Then, on the projection screens that covered every wall of the hall, the words Commander Neil Armstrong appeared. I couldn't quite understand why, and then, as an announcer said Ladies and Gentlemen... the possibility flashed past me. No, it can't be... Please welcome Neil Armstrong! I couldn't believe it, and the looks Ian and I shot each other across the floor were priceless. We were on a high for the rest of the night.

I first discovered Ian's photography three years ago, when I was 19. If I had been told then - if I had been told even a month ago - that we'd one day be working together in Las Vegas, I'd have found it difficult to believe. This shoot has been a turning point for me: Ian's passion for photography, his dedication to the work - not to mention the sheer quality of the shots he produces - have been utterly inspiring (as well as making me painfully jealous.) Taken minutes after our arrival at the MGM Grand, from the window of his hotel room, Ian and I marvel at the ridiculous pomp of Las Vegas and the unlikeliness of our situation. www.iangavan.com Las Vegas, 2008.

L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon is a group of restaurants in: Paris, Tokyo, New York, Las Vegas, London, and Hong Kong. Opened by renowned chef Joël Robuchon, the restaurants serve French haute cuisine in a stylized environment. Many of the seats are arranged to overlook the meal preparation in the kitchen and can be likened to a sushi bar type atmosphere. Robuchon's signature dishes include a cauliflower cream with caviar and potato puree; French Quail Legs stuffed in Foie Gras. In 2007, the restaurant was voted 13th best in the world in Restaurant (magazine) Top 50. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L'Atelier_de_Joël_Robuchon

To honor the lion and help safeguard its preservation for future generations, MGM Grand Hotel and Casino has created a one-of-a-kind Lion Habitat as a showcase for public education and appreciation for this majestic creature of nature. The lion has been a part of the MGM heritage for many years, beginning with the legendary Leo, whose roars have welcomed generations of moviegoers to epics of the silver screen. The lions live in custom accommodations on an 8.5-acre ranch 12 miles from the MGM Grand. They are owned and cared for by noted feline expert Keith Evans, who has been training exotic animals for more than 30 years.

This pic is one of the best I have taken using the Sony DSC F828. It is an ISO 800 handheld F/5 1/30s @200mm equiv, check the EXIF it is coming straight from the camera, no curves, levels or anything. Many people has referred to the ISO 800 in the F828 as unusable, well, this pic shows how usable in very difficult conditions the ISO 800 is. I know I could have shot at 1/60 at F/4, or maybe ISO 400 at F/4, but I was trying to get the best from the ISO and I think I got it. If you push on ALL SIZES you can see the original untouched image. EXPLORE!!! Highest position: 401 on Tuesday, October 3, 2006

Atlas is a Titan giant who was condemned to support the heavens on his shoulders for rebelling against the gods. There are eleven bronze-finished fiberglass statues that complement the lion outside the MGM Grand. The winged figures of Atlas-like men holding 16-foot diameter bowls are about twice life- size, 10 feet tall in their kneeling position. Each of them houses brilliant light beams that project skyward. Please View Large Hive Mind

This trip made up for all my limoless days, including my high school prom where I rode to the ceremony in a dirty VW shaggin wagon Van :| This was the Hummer Daddy limo (seating for 30!) the Mashable crew took to dinner on the last night of CES. It was pimp. Now I'm back to PJs and frozen pizza. :P

This was a simulator ride that moved on a track and would periodically open its windows on live scenes. It had major technical problems and opened very late. The laser disc players that these used had to be moved to a small trolley pulled behind the simulator because the shaking made the discs skip. I was also thrown out of my seat during cast previews. It was a cool ride though. MGM Grand Adventures Theme Park MGM Grand Hotel Las Vegas, NV 1994

The Statue of Liberty, Empire State building, and the skyline are all scale replicas and part of the New York New York Hotel and Casino, and the lion is the corner edge of the MGM Grand Casino. If you look close, you'll see the NY Skyline includes a roller coaster.

This is was back in Vegas. On the Las Vegas Monorail, which only goes on one side of the strip, so it's kind of stupid unless you want to get from like the convention center to the MGM Grand. Very nice, quick, and clean. As you can see it was oddly very quiet with nobody other than my family on this segment of the monorail. explore: #157
