Praha hlavní nádraží (English: Prague main railway station, abbreviated Praha hl.n) is the largest and most important railway station in Prague in the Czech Republic. It was originally opened in 1871 and named Franz Joseph I after Franz Joseph I of Austria. During the First Republic and from 1945 to 1953 the station was called Wilson station (Czech: Wilsonovo nádraží) after former President of the United States Woodrow Wilson. His statue was placed in the park in front of the station before later being destroyed by German occupiers after the U.S. entered the war. The monument was destroyed by night on 11 December 1941 and the statue melted. About the place: Prague Congress Centre is one of the dominant points of the City of Prague. It is located on one of Prague’s hills, which provides visitors with a beautiful view of the world famous Prague panorama where the silhouette of Prague Castle, together with a myriad of towers belonging to churches, cathedrals, palaces and ancient buildings from the historical centre, rise over the Vltava River and extensive parks. The Prague Congress Centre is one of the largest and best-equipped European centres. A group of Czech and foreign experts in the field of acoustics participated in its modification. The hall is four storeys high, rising from the first to the fourth floor. The dimensions of the orchestra shell nable large musical bodies numbering 100 musicians to perform concerts, with up to 2,764 guests being able to view them from the auditorium. Powder Tower (Prašná brána) in Prague

Powder Tower (Prašná brána) in Prague
Made by Raf Ferreira
Explore #180 29 days, 6 countries and 16k pictures later, I'm back from my European Tour with Tatiana. I will try my best to post the pictures here, as fast as I can. What a trip! ----- Let's start with Prague, Czech Republic. The construction of the 65m-tall Powder Tower begun in 1475 under the reign of King Vladislav II Jagiello and for a few centuries has been known as the New Tower. It used to form one of the 13 entrances to the Old Town and contribute to the beauty of the Royal Court, the king’s residence. The New Tower was built in concordance with the Old Town Bridge Tower designed by Peter Parler a century before. In 1483 the king moved to Prague Castle and the bridge was left unfinished. Between 1875 and 1886 the tower was rebuilt, decorated and redesigned by Josef Mocker. The gate acquired its present name in the 17th century when it was used to store gunpowder. Today, there is a small exhibition about the tower and it is open for visiting. See it

Spring on Wenceslas square, Prague

Spring on Wenceslas square, Prague

More of a boulevard than a square, Wenceslas Square does have an impressive history. Founded in 1348 as a horse market as part of a plan by King Charles IV (Wenceslas). The square got its name during the rise of anti-monarchy tendencies in the mid 19th century. Giant mass was served here during the nationalist upheavals in 1848, the independence of the Czechoslovakia on the Austrian monarchy was celebrated here in 1918. People gathered here also in 1969 after the Soviet invasion into Czechoslovakia and in January on the same year, student Jan Palach burnt himself to death on the steps of the National Museum, as a protest to the occupation. During the Velvet revolution in November 1989, following student demonstration at Národní Třída, crowds gathered here to protest against Communist regime. Now it is a vibrant centre of the the town lined with hotels, restaurants, cafes, galleries and shops.

Mladá fronta is the most influential daily newspaper in the Czech Republic. Its name could be translated into English as The Youth Front Today. The paper is owned by Rheinisch-Bergische Druckerei- und Verlagsgesellschaft GmbH, the publisher of the Rheinische Post. It was set up in 1945 under name Mladá fronta as a daily newspaper for youths. During the era of socialism, Mladá fronta was a newspaper of the Socialist Union of Youth. After the Velvet Revolution, its popularity grew and nowadays it is sometimes referred to as MF Dnes. Circulation as of 2004 is around 310,000 papers per day and as such it is one of the most popular and influential newspapers. -Wikipedia This was a totally coincidental opportunity to visit the buildings which had Mladá fronta left in 1989. These buildings are just 200 meters far from the very centre of the city (), which is quite surreal. [ http://www.pavelhorak.com/ ]

Highest position in Explore # 4 on 6th Mar'09 Saw this fountain in front of National Museum at Wenceslas Square while crossing traffic signal. Just had 2-3 seconds to compose this but deceided to opt for slow shutter for making these water look likes steel bars. It's a shame I was not having my wide angle lens with me at that moment. Got this picture from my archives and reprocessed it by tonemapping and digitally blending single RAW file using Photoshop. Trivia Wenceslas Square is one of the main city squares and the centre of the business and cultural communities in the New Town of Prague, Czech Republic. The square is named after Saint Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia. Source: Wikipedia

Wenceslas Square (Vaclavske namesti) is a vibrant area of hotels, apartments, restaurants, bars, clubs and shops. The 750m long and 60m wide boulevard that makes up Wenceslas Square was laid out over 600 years ago during the reign of Charles IV. It was originally used as the Prague horse market. From anti-communist uprisings to celebrations of national sporting achievements, Wenceslas Square is where the Czech's come to let off steam. It holds up to 400,000 people! At the top of Wenceslas Square a statue of St. Wenceslas on his horse cuts a striking figure. Click here to view larger size photo on black I was in a creative mood today and experimented with the multiple exposure function of the Nikon D7000. This portrait of my son was taken using the escalator down into the metro station. Nikon D7000 and lens AF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 ED DX. Taken at ISO 800 1/100s f/2.8 at focal length 28mm. First exposure of background was underexposed at -1/3EV and second exposure was overexposed by 2/3EV compared to the default settings taken by the camera when selecting the multiple exposure mode with auto gain ON.

The Meran is to the right of the Evropa in this picture. This richly decorated 'Succession' building designed by Bendelmeyer, Latal and Hypsman has gold statues holding bronze lanterns while the restaurant with inlaid timber panelling, mosaics and symbolic pictures used to serve a cracking ham and eggs for breakfast. Outfit note - I'm wearing white leather loafers by Gabor, white jeans by Massimo Dutti, a white knitted vest by Basler, a pale blue merino wool tunic top from the Pure Collection and a denim jacket from HIS. The handbag is by Liz Clairbourn.

Franz Kafka and Prague - a life in seven outings. 10. The New German Theatre (c1905)

Kafka was influenced by the Yiddish theatre but he was an inverterate theatre goer and this is where he went. Today it is the Statni Opera and one of my favourite haunts when I go out in Prague. This pic was taken on the way to a performance of the Magic Flute. It is a rare excursion for me in heels. I am also wearing two of my favourite buys of 2010 - a sleveless silk wraparound blouse from Hobbs and a grey mohair longline cardi from Marc O'Polo.

Puedes perderte entre sus calles, el bohemio puente de Carlos, visitar dónde nació Kafka y tomar pivo a raudales.Hay que hacer una escapada! Prague, in my humble opinion is one of the most beautiful cities I have seen. Did you miss among its streets, the bohemian Charles Bridge, visit where Kafka was born and taking pivo 'to flooding. We need to make a break!

The New Town Hall of Prague (Novomestská Radnice) already existed in the 14th century and was extended during both the 15th and 16th century, when a Gothic tower and an arcaded courtyard were added. Following the merging of the four towns of Prague in the late 18th century, the New Town hall was no longer used as a seat of administration and today functions as simply a grand Gothic hall, being used for many social events.

A little old street of Prague whose tiny houses, most of dolls, appear to be attached to the wall of the castle. In the sixteenth century is built the accommodation of the sentinels of the castle, which, in turn, allowed all kinds of tenants: cooks, alchemists and jewelers who, at the behest of Emperor Rudolf II, tried to transform base metal into gold and sought to Stone Philosopher or the Elixir of Long Life.

One of my older works, this is photo of the Wenceslas Square (Vaclavske namestie) in Prague. I usually try to stay a little more to the real look, but not with this one :). There is a small halo around the top of the buildings, probably will redo this one sometime to get rid of it. Created from a single photo, shot with a Canon 450d witha a Sigma 18-200mm lens. Best viewed large, lots of small details.
