When Anne Frank arrived in Amsterdam on the 5th of December 1933 she was just 4 years old. Anne would have some fairly careless years at the Merwedeplein. The fact that she grew up here made her a famous Amsterdammer. 6 july 1942 she and her family went into hiding and were arrested by the nazi's 4 August 1944. She and her sister Margot died in March 1945 of typhus, 15 years of age, in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp one month before that camp was liberated.

The 6th of July 1942 at 7.30 in the morning the Frank family left the Merwedeplein, never to return to the relatively careless days at the square. Here you see Anne looking back at the house were she lived happily for 9 years. She is 13 now. She carries a schoolbag and other belongins. She would start writing her diary in hidding.

Anne Frank's diary is clear about the days she spent at this square. A very quiet and unique place in the city where they thought being safe for the Nazi's. But the family had to go into hiding. The flowers are at the foot of the statue are refreshed on a regular basis by the people that live at the square.

Otto Frank, was a good photographer and he made several photos of the neigbourhood he lived in. One of those was made almost in the same spot I am standing now.
