Out in Merida

Out in Merida
Made by Jessica Sweet TV
Kisses Jessica Out in Merida Well its almost another year that ends, so I decided to go to Merida. After arrival, and going around a bit to get a place to sleep (I forgot like last year, that around this time of the year Merida is crowded and one must reserve a place), I called my friend Fer, and agreed on a time to go have a coffee and talk, this time we went downtown where after a very short walk around, short since for reasons I cant understand I was unable to walk with those heels, yes they were tall, but strangely I have previously used them, walked, and danced with them for long without trouble. It was like if the heel got broken . Anyways, after seeing I was not able to walk we sat down to have some coffee and cake and have a nice chat. After a while talking it was time to go, my friend suggested I waited there while she went for her car, but turned out I was able to walk normally again. As I said, strange. From there my friend took me to a park near by to take a few more pics with the Xmas lights, that I will post too later. Kisses Jessica

I went out on the town by myself one morning and just shot everything in sight. Besides the 50s-inspiredish car, my favourite part of this photo has to be all the hubcaps stuffed into the window grate of the building in the background. This photo has become one of my bestsellers and since only 100 will be printed of any given photograph, get your limited edition copy soon before they all sell out. Prints of this photograph can be purchased on my website, www.phoenixis.ca/store.html. Location: Merida, Yucatan, Mexico.

Triptych of Street Signs from Merida

Triptych of Street Signs from Merida
Made by thaths
Merida (Founded in 1542) is one of the first Spanish cities in the New World. To be able to communicate with a largely illiterate Mayan population, the Spanish gave unique names (Las Monjas, El Perro, etc.) to the intersections in the city center and painted street signs like these. These signs were designed to help the illiterate Mayan natives navigate the city as well as teach them rudimentary Spanish. Though the original signs have disssappeared over the years, the city has several artistically designed replacements that are beloved by the residents.

The jarana is the typical dance and musical form of the Yucatan Peninsula. There exists two forms of metrics in jarana: 6 por 8 (in musical counts of 6/8) and 3 por 4 (in musical counts of 3/4). The jarana dance is done in pairs that consists of footwork without distinguished steps nor differentiation between women and men. The jarana is performed by a winds band ensemble.
