Merchandise Mart
The Merchandise Mart is one of the largest commercial buildings in the world, located in Chicago, Illinois. It opened in 1930 on the site of the Chicago and North Western Railway's former Wells Street Station, which the railroad had abandoned in favor of the Chicago and North Western Passenger Terminal in 1911.

Merchandise Mart & Franklin Street Bridge, Chicago
Made by Thad Roan - Bridgepix
The Franklin–Orleans Street Bridge over the Chicago River was built in October 1920, directly southwest of the Merchandise Mart. Connecting the Near North Side with The Loop, is at the junction of the branches of the river, lying directly west of the Wells Street Bridge. It carries four lanes of traffic in the northbound direction, and sidewalks are available on both sides of the bridge. Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company was the contractor for the substructure, and the Ketler–Elliot Company was the contractor for the superstructure. Original electrical equipment was installed by C.H. Norwood. The bridge is an example of a trunnion bascule bridge, with each half of the roadway is cantilevered out from shore abutments. The bridge is extremely efficient to operate. The bridge provided a new connection to the southern banks of the river and aided in westward expansion along Wacker Drive. When opened in 1930, the Merchandise Mart or the Merch Mart, located in the Near North Side, Chicago, Illinois, was the largest building in the world with 4,000,000 square feet (372,000 m2) of floor space. Previously owned by the Marshall Field family, the Mart centralized Chicago's wholesale goods business by consolidating vendors and trade under a single roof. Massive in its construction, and serving as a monument to early 20th century merchandising and architecture, the art deco landmark anchors the daytime skyline at the junction of the Chicago River branches. With upper levels bathed in colored floodlight, the structure stands out against darker downtown buildings in night views. The building continues to be a leading retailing and wholesale destination, hosting 20,000 visitors and tenants per day. (Wikipedia)

FashioNext NeoCon 2010
Made by Brentano fabrics
FUSING TEXTILE, FURNITURE, AND FASHION DESIGN When the Chicago History Museum decided to follow up the success of their 2009 FashioNext competition, Brentano said I do to providing the fabrics for the second year. The competition asks established Chicago designers to create a garment inspired by select pieces from the Museum's acclaimed costume collection, using only Brentano textiles. While last year's competition was based around the Museum's Chic Chicago exhibition, the Museum revamped the contest for 2010 to accompany I Do! Chicago Ties the Knot , a wedding-themed costume exhibition that opened on May 22, 2010. Brentano and the Museum decided the competition would not only challenge the designers to use materials differently, but would also create a unique opportunity to fuse fashion and interior design within a special exhibition during the 2010 NeoCon World’s Trades Fair. Brentano partnered with Allermuir, Andreu World America, and Leland International—three leading contract furniture companies — to provide the literal counterpart to these imaginative fashion designs. Brentano fabrics, paired with the sophisticated aesthetic of the furniture and the cutting-edge design of the dresses, combine in a collaborative exhibit demonstrating how the creative worlds of fabric, furniture, and fashion can come together. Following the FashioNext installation at NeoCon, the winning piece will be displayed in the I Do! Chicago Ties the Knot exhibition, and then will go on to become a permanent part of the Chicago History Museum's acclaimed costume collection.

2009 Green Spot - Merchandise Mart
Made by Brentano fabrics
Brentano fabrics could be seen in the 2009 Merchandise Mart's Green Spot, a green product gallery and education center that showcases new, innovative, sustainable, and eco-friendly products from showrooms in the Merchandise Mart. Located on the first floor, this year's Green Spot was finished just in time for NeoCon 2009, with the final signs for Brentano's certified eco wool pattern Eco Stripe and environmentally-friendly faux leather Zebra going up just two days before the show began. Brentano Design Director Iris Wang and other members of the design studio were up on the 6th floor in Donghia. In the showroom, they enjoyed previewing their upcoming fall 2009 collection - which includes the IIDA/HD Product Award-winning upholstery De-Vine and drapery Rendezvous - as well as taking in Donghia's stunning new space that exemplifies the classic Donghia style of quiet elegance.

C&NW Galena Division Suburban Time Card (September 17, 1893)
Made by Jon R. Roma
This little gem landed in my hands today – a 115-year-old C&NW Galena Division suburban timetable. This time card (actually a little folder) shows services from the Wells Street Depot in Chicago to Maywood, Elmhurst, Turner (today's West Chicago), and Geneva. Branch line service ran from Geneva to St. Charles, Batavia, and Aurora, and also from Turner to Elgin (West Side), Elgin (East Side), Dundee, Crystal Lake, and Lake Geneva. I've scanned this timetable (inside and out) at high resolution; write me if you want a PDF.

The Merchandise Mart was opened in 1930, after three years of construction. It was the largest building in the world when it was opened. It has 15 floors (20 in the tower). Floor area is about 4 million sq.ft. (380,000 sq.m.). About half of its space is devoted to wholesale showrooms. The remainder is retail showrooms, offices, a shopping mall, a hotel, restaurants, college classrooms - you name it, The view is from Marina City, looking west. The Chicago River is at left.

Valentine's Day Lights at the Merchandise Mart

The central tower of the Merchandise Mart, as seen from the roof. The mart is lit up red for Valentine's Day on this snowy, mid-February day. Don't ask how I got this picture. At least, not publicly. I'm just thrilled to have had the chance. I should have some more from up here later on.
