MLB Ball Fields

MLB Ball Fields
Made by ajmexico
Years ago, maybe 40 years ago, there were some baseball fields near the Melbourne airport. These were, I think, remnants of the days when the New York Giants training camp was in Melbourne, FL, as depicted in the film Big Leaguer (1953) with Edward G. Robinson. Amazingly, traces of the old practice fields can still be seen in Google Maps or Google Earth. This field is on airport property, just south of the terminal building. The street at the bottom of the image is NASA Blvd. I enhanced the contrast a bit on this image. There are four baseball diamonds, with the home plates nearest the center of the image. The existence of baseball fields here may even date back to World War II, when the airport was Naval Air Station, Melbourne. MLB is both the airport code and Major League Baseball. This is a 2006 Google Earth image. (see map) Note: the 2011 Google Maps image doesn't really show the ball fields at all. I think you have to look at certain times of the year. Also, I walked out there and couldn't see a thing from ground level.

Canberra Bomber

Spotted this plane at the Melbourne, Florida airport, parked near some construction. Sorry the photo isn't better, but this is as close as I could get, with a long lens. This is totally unexpected. It looks like a Canberra bomber -- I never expected to see one in this area.

Aft T-38 cockpit with the upgraded flat-panel avionics. Note rear-view mirrors. This is a pole-aided photograph. The T-38 cockpit is so high off the ground, I had to put my camera on a hiking stick to get this photo. The camera was probably about 11 feet high for this.

The fuselage on the little Canadair CRJ-200 is actually smaller than one of the engines on the Antonov An-124...and the regional jet was actually closer towards the camera. Thanks to the good folks at Baer Air who allowed me to stand near their hangar to take pictures.

Florida Tech is replacing their Piper Warriors with Liberty XL2, even smaller than the Warrior. Next year, if I get a chance to start my private pilot's license certification, this is the plane I'll be training on.
