The Spray That Stays

The Spray That Stays

In this closer picture of Medina Falls you can see off to the left of the falls what looks like a temporary waterfall coming off of the hillside. It's not. It is foam that has always been a part of this waterfall. Over on that side I could see sheets of it being thrown 8 ft into the air, some of it settling over on the bank. I'll see that sort of thing at other waterfall area, but nothing like the Medina version. By the way, just above this point, Old Orchard Creek flows under the Erie Canal which is carried past the town of Media on an often rebuilt aqueduct.

Both Sides Now

Looking down Oak Orchard Creek in Medina NY. You can see the crest of Medina Falls at right center. The fascinating thing for me here -- the leaves! On the left hand side of the creek the trees are pretty much like the trees in other parts of the area - Leaves half off the trees, very few green leaves. On the right hand side the leaves are still about 2/3rds green and almost no leaves have fallen.

Around The Bend

Around The Bend
Made by fallsguyd
This is about the biggest bend in the Erie Canal (an aqueduct at this point) I can ever remember seeing. My friend, the Canaltraveler, Jim, will undoubtedly come by here and say whether there is a bigger bend somewhere on the canal. That's the backside of Main St, Medina. The blue figure on one of the distant building is an old time canal boatman. You can see a bigger image below.

Abandoned Powerplant

Abandoned Powerplant

Got up early this Saturday morning and decided to get out with the camera and take some photographs. I had a couple spots that I have wanted to go to for awhile. One spot not only yielded the photographs I went there for but only about 500 feet away nestled away off the path I found this abandoned factory. What a GEM!!! Medina, NY

Silver Dollar Bar

Silver Dollar Bar

Medina, NY is home to this little gem of a bar. The main street in this western NY town is very wide and the remaining building are solid and attractive. What a shame it can't be more vital and active! For more cool roadside stuff, visit us here!

Thought the shots at Wiscoy and Attica might have been the last of the year, but it looks like Medina wins the prize! Kinda interesting the way only the falls were in shadow and the sun illuminated the surrounding trees and foliage.

Cold But Colorful Medina Falls

Cold But Colorful Medina Falls

Cold But Colorful Medina Falls. This has to be about the coldest looking falls I've ever seen! But with most other falls looking almost black and white, Medina Falls was showing some color.

The store is not empty..only the merchandise was removed but the shelves, counters, displays and even signage are still in place, although the roof is collapsing into the center of the store.

Good time to be there -- Enough leaves off the trees so there is a decent view (which there often isn't). Enough leaves on some of the trees for some color.

Perhaps one day upstate cities will have more than one platform in service. Perhaps they will also have trains that can travel at more than 70mph. Perhaps, one day.

The illuminated thermometer in Medina says it all, really: 93F in the sun. This was my seventh day on the road and I was loving it. Back home it was 55F at best!
