Medan is the capital city of North Sumatra province, Indonesia. It is the largest city in Sumatra. It is located in the north of the province, and has a nearby harbour, Belawan, and an international airport, Polonia International Airport.

Many tourists choose to use Medan as a quick thru-point to travel elsewhere in Sumatra, but the city offers a glimpse of a large Indonesian city still unfrequented by western tourists, and shouldn't be quickly dismissed. However, Medan is more chaotic and has a bit more litter than Jakarta or Denpasar and open sewers abound. Furthermore, not as many people speak English in Medan as in other large Indonesian cities, but even a short list of useful expressions goes a long way, and Sumaterans are still unjaded by westerners.

Moorish Aesthetic. Grand Mosque - Masjid Raya, Medan, Sumatra, Indonesia

Moorish Aesthetic. Grand Mosque - Masjid Raya, Medan, Sumatra, Indonesia
Made by Rana Pipiens
When I walk to the Groningen railway station by way of the Folkingestraat, slightly rising and then dipping towards the Zuiderdiep, I pass the Synagogue built in 1905-6. It's a handsome building in the Moorish Revival Style which was much in vogue in the second half of the nineteenth century and the first decade or so of the twentieth. Its design was by the well-known Dutch protestant architect of churches, Tjeerd Kuipers (1857-1942). He'd been much influenced by the school of Gottfried Semper (1803-1879), who'd planned the famous Semper Synagogue (1838-40) of Dresden, Germany. The Kingdom of the Netherlands in those days was a foremost colonial power far-reaching to both West and East. Under its jurisdiction still fell what is today Indonesia. The island of Sumatra in the second half of the nineteenth century knew unprecedented growth, mainly due to the development of tobacco cultivation and rubber culture. The northern town of Medan expanded explosively, and among the many new edifices was a modern mosque in the same Moorish Style as the Groningen Synagogue. Commissioned by the ninth Sultan of Deli, it was largely financed by the 'captain' of the Chinese faction, the fabulously wealthy Chong A Fie. As far as I know, it's uncertain who actually planned the building architecturally but usually its design is attributed to two Dutch architects: one Klingenberg and Adolf J. Dingemans, boh of Amsterdam. Ground was first broken in 1906, and just one hundred years ago - in the Autumn of 1909 - the building was ready to be inaugurated on September 9. It's a really handsome building, enhanced by the imported columns of Italian marble, a clock donated by Queen Wilhelmina, exquisite floral patterns. A wonderfully light and airy space, it's great for quietude and contemplation, and for prayer, of course. Invariably, on leaving this pleasant space, you're asked to join discussions over a glass of water or cup of coffee about the relative merits of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Seeking to divert from this higher theology and metaphysics, I one afternoon pointed to the aesthetic of the building. Upon which one of the interlocutors triumphantly exclaimed: Yes! and it's Allah who's given you an eye for that! What then to say...?!

The building itself once was the biggest department store in the colonial era. Thankfully, along with dozens of other children that age and lived in the same building with him, Donli still tasting school even with the limited ability of parents. Gang Pancasila - Medan - Sumatra - Indonesia Gang Pancasila (Pancasila is the Indonesian constitution) is a sidestreet of Jalan Brigjend Katamso near Istana Maimun (Maimun Palace) in the Maimun district. In Dutch colonial times Jalan Brigjend Katamso was called Paleisstraat (Palace Street). It is the street where my wife Susy lived before she came to Holland. And yes, in front of the parked car you can see 10 barrels (full) with oil. Unthinkable in the western world.... I have seen the effects of the Firework Disaster in Enschede in Holland...

Lion Air 737 departing Polonia

Lion Air 737 departing Polonia
Made by Indo Pilot
At Polonia airport we usually depart at the runway mid-section (holding point Delta). The Caravan doesn't really need the 2900 meters of runway on offer (although it's nice to have it all if you can in-case of engine failure). Occasionally we are asked to taxi to holding point Alpha, which is where all the larger aircraft tend to enter for runway 23. It's quite fun to mix it with the larger aircraft although you have to ensure you leave time before departing if a larger jet has just taken off. ATC don't seem to have a concept of wake turbulence!

Dua orang lansia yang pada waktu itu sedang berjalan santai menarik perhatin saya untuk saya jepret. Bangunan besar yang terlihat pada latar belakang adalah sebuah bangunan kuil yang belum selesai dibangun.
